In 2019 @MForstater’s contract to work for an economic think tank was not renewed after some in that organisation complained she was transphobic, following her tweets and proposal to blog about the reality of sex and importance of women’s rights.

Further complaints appeared to be that she left a leaflet from @fairplaywomen on her desk and ‘misgendered’ a person outside the organisation, who presented as a man but wished to be known as non binary.
Maya took the think tank to an Employment Tribunal who threw her case out in 2020, claiming that her belief in the reality of sex was ‘Not Worthy of Respect in a Democratic Society’ [NWORIDS] and thus she could not claim any protection from discrimination on the basis of this.
Maya appealed and won in June 2021 when the EAT declared her belief was Worthy Of Respect In A Democratic Society [WORIADS] but warned against ‘gratuitous and indiscriminate’ ‘Misgendering’. Maya was clear she would use preferred pronouns unless context demanded otherwise.
The matter then proceeded to a further employment tribunal to determine if Maya legally qualifies as a person who is protected by employment legislation (think tank say no, she wasn’t ‘staff’) and if so, did the think tank unlawfully discriminate against her protected belief.
Evidence has so far been heard from Maya and four employees of the think tank. What has emerged has been deeply troubling. It appears that due to vocal and persistent complaints against Maya that she was ‘offensive’, it was felt easier to just get rid of her.
It appears that none of the employees understood what she was saying and their analysis did not go much beyond reliance on use of word ‘offensive’. Thus it was never made clear to Maya exactly what she had done wrong or what she could do to make amends.
Evidence and submissions will continue next week. I do not know when we will get a judgment. I hope it will confirm that Maya was victim of unlawful discrimination and I hope will make comment about the very poor practices of the think tank.
