Schools, social media & the wider culture increasingly send impressionable kids the message they can "choose" to be a boy or a girl, or something in between. This adult theory -- with its post-modern denial of biological reality -- used to be confined to the fringes of higher ed.
Gender non-conforming kids, who might otherwise grow up to be gay/bisexual, are now exposed to the idea that unease in their bodies, not fitting in with peers, may mean they are the opposite sex. Autistic kids may be especially vulnerable to this "black & white" thinking.

It's the Oz election campaign & there's confusion among politicians & journos about trans-identifying minors & their access to surgery. Short answer: biological girls under 18 *do* get trans mastectomy in Australia. To say it doesn't happen is wrong. #AusPol #AusVotes #Health
In Australia, 15 is the youngest known age for "top surgery", as it's often called online. See this news report & screenshot.

Family Court has been the only info source on under-18 trans surgery. Until the 2018 case re Matthew, the court had to give the green light, even if docs & parents agreed. This was said to be "discriminatory". Now, judges only hear under-18 surgery cases if there's a dispute.

Data suggests that blockers are a one-way path to lifelong medicalisation when left-alone, most kids with childhood dysphoria grew out of it & many emerged as gay/bisexual.

Asked *his* view about trans inclusion in female sport, Australia's would-be PM Anthony Albanese deflected by saying "that is covered by the Sex Discrimination Act ... that girls should be able to play sport against girls ..." #AusPol 1/
For most Aussies, a girl is a biological girl. That's the position of Katherine Deves of @SWS_australasia.

But the anti-discrimination law cited by Albanese protects a boy who "identifies" as a girl.

So, is Albo defending female sport or not?

Back in 2013, when Albanese was a minister in a centre-left Labor govt, the idea of a self-declared "gender identity" at odds with birth sex was introduced to the Sex Discrimination Act. Few noticed at the time, or understood the implications.

Dominic Perrottet, the premier of Australia’s most populous state, NSW, has defied attempts to shut down debate about the effect of transgender “inclusion” on female sport, saying it’s a “matter of fairness & physiology”. #AusPol #Sport #Safety
Perrottet: “The right thing to do is take the concerns of women & girls seriously, not shut them down, and if that means looking at appropriate protections for women-only sport, let’s have the conversation.”
The “progressive” wing of Perrottet’s Liberal Party view the issue as a validation of trans identity & overlook the reality of male-bodied players in female sport. Identity is not the problem, which is why female-bodied trans players would face unfairness & injury in male sport.

The Sydney seat of Warringah has two female candidates who an observer might expect to have strong opinions about the integrity of female sport. One is Katherine Deves of @SWS_australasia, the other is Zali Steggall, our first female medalist in the Winter Olympics. #AusPol
In 2019, with an orchestrated show of unity, a transgender inclusion guideline was issued by two Australian govt agencies, Sport Australia & the human rights commission, along with a peak sporting body. This document enjoyed uncritical media promotion.

But this was a big shift, pushing sports to reorganise according to someone's inner feeling of "gender identity", not the fact of biological sex -- and with the implied threat of fines for discrimination if sports didn't play ball, not too mention denunciation as "transphobic".
