India needs Lithium for the adoption of EVs.⤵️
What is the use of Lithium?
• Lithium is a key component of lithium-ion batteries used in Electric Vehicles (EV)
Lithium-ion batteries are bringing a whole new reality to the world of energy.
And in this need of the hour, India doesn't have enough lithium reserves for lithium-ion batteries 😟
Why is India looking for Lithium? ⤵️
• For adoption of Electric Vehicles in the country.
• Lithium-ion batteries account for almost 50% of the cost of the EV.
Where does the problem arise?
⚠️ India does not have enough lithium reserves for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries & almost all EVs in the country run on batteries imported mainly from China.
➡️ With India being in a diplomatic tussle with China, the supplies from the neighbouring country have declined and India is looking for other import avenues.
• The supply is not sufficient compared to the surge in demand from electric vehicle makers worldwide.
China, world's 3rd largest producer, is also witnessing a mismatch between demand & supply, which has led to the rise in prices.
Does India produce lithium?
India is dependent on imports for lithium as production in the country is minimal.
The first traces of lithium were found in Karnataka which is relatively small, with just about 1,600 tonnes of lithium deposits.
What is India doing to source lithium?
✅India is searching for domestic reserves & looking newer countries to source the mineral.
Recently India committed to jointly invest $6 million with the Australian gov. to explore lithium & cobalt mines there over the next 6 months.
With the daily increase in petrol diesel prices and growing demand for Electric vehicles, What do you think the lack of lithium batteries supply will have an impact on the cost of EVs?
