#Russia is desperately planting seeds of doubt in stories that sit beyond the discursive mythical boundaries of ๐ท๐บ identity.
I believe it will work. Here's why:
Thread๐งต
Not only have I seen ๐ท๐บ media sites talking about "ัะตะนะบ ะฝััั" in relation to the Bucha massacre, but also increasing num of articles abt falsified stories from #ukraine on Yunarmiya, Victory Volunteers & Great Patriotic War museum sites.
Of course, these stories do not relate to the massacre but sow seeds of doubt & perpetuate #disinfo claims. For example, state Duma Deputy & Victory Volunteers leader Olga Zanko said:
โMuseums in universities should become centers of local history and the study of Russian history. This is esp imp today, when we see how people abroad and even inside our country are trying to falsify history...
It's sufficient to recall history textbooks in Ukraine, in which the victory in World War II is interpreted not as a victory over Nazism, but as further crimes of Soviet power in Ukraine." ะฒะพะปะพะฝััััะฟะพะฑะตะดั.ัั/news/id/5070
๐ท๐บ is fostering an atmosphere of doubt based on falsehoods abt ๐บ๐ฆ atrocities, neo-nazism, genocide & ัะตะนะบ news. ๐ท๐บ has released that these narratives need to become embedded in its besieged fortress metaphor; part of ๐ท๐บ larger imagined community.
It knows it is unable to stop alternative discourses completely. ๐ท๐บ first tried to cut the media, now instead, it sows seeds of doubt - the second is more durable because these seeds of doubt are not new or different, & instead, continue to reaffirm ๐ท๐บ hist experiences.
These discourses will only hasten as more atrocities are uncovered - pushing ๐ท๐บ people toโanything that does not tow the state line. It's not a q of whether ๐ท๐บ people will believe it or not anymore - unfortunately, they are mandatory members of this imagined community.
#Russian people are living in an information vacuum. They are being confronted, from many angles, by streamlined discourses & where counter-narratives pop up, so do doubt-casting efforts.
๐งต My thoughts on propaganda & ๐ท๐บ invented reality:
My ideas here closely relate to discussions on ๐ท๐บ propaganda. Over the last week, I've grappled to understand the absolutely disgusting discursive ๐ฎ that is being perpetuated among society. Here's where I'm at: Is this propaganda or is this more sinister?
**ofc ๐ท๐บ state lies**
To us, what we have seen over the last 5 weeks has all the trademarks of propaganda: state-led, streamlined discourses, & incr. censorship.
However, the more I've reflected on this, the more I believe this is different.
#Russia lives in its own reality. We call it propaganda, indoctrination, patriotic edu...no, this is ๐ท๐บ's imagined (& truly believed) state.
Short ๐งต
In ๐ท๐บ, the stories they perpetuate of Nazism & genocide in ๐บ๐ฆ is not *just* propaganda but a core part of ๐ท๐บ's current belief system. Reading @BirgeLucy & @DrJadeMcGlynn excellent insights really hammers this home.
Placing these discourses within the framework of propaganda belittles them. For centuries, ๐ท๐บ has lived within a besieged fortress, planting the same discursive seeds time & time again.
๐ท๐บ future is contingent on preserving & extending the past, because they could not possibly find any victory in today's society.

Remember this: GPW hist has been modified to amplify the glory of the USSR's victory over Nazi Germany & mutes USSR's role in Katyn Massacre & Stalinist purges of the late 1930s.
It has been specially carved out & preserved for decades, underpinning the direction that ๐ท๐บ takes next.
As ๐ท๐บ war in ๐บ๐ฆ continues, so does the militarisation of youth. It's really imp to examine Russia's targeted propaganda programmes. Here's why.
A ๐งต:
First, it's impossible for us to pop into Putin's mind. What he says, versus what he does are wildly different. For example, "let's recognise Donetsk and Luhansk" & then also bombs Lviv (1,000km away). We can get a sense of Putin's aims from his speeches...
...but targeted propaganda tells us more, esp in reference to youth-orientated indoctrination. This is because Putin is training the youth for the future > the militarisation of youth doesn't tell us what he wants now, but what he wants for ๐ท๐บ's future.
Putin had drawn upon the GPW memory (time & time again) to justify & (try) to arouse support for his invasion of Ukraine. I'm starting to think it *could* have limitations. ๐งต
GPW is the most celebrated commemorative date in Russia. Why?
1. Roughly 27 mill Soviet people died during the war, making it so that nearly every Soviet family knew someone who died during that period. They had direct connections.
Russia's war propaganda is pretty comprehensive. Over the past few weeks, I've posted links to what ๐ท๐บpeople are being fed - especially through education institutions (youth groups, museums). What are my (still initial) thoughts? ๐งต
At first, some of these make-shift propaganda tactics seemed last-minute DIY, & some are still very chaotic. However, with reflection, they are more comprehensive that I initially thought. Why? Because they draw on rhetoric that has simmered away in the background for years.
1. The 'Z' campaign, for example, still seems thrown together. Granted, over the last few weeks, organisers have been able to create merchandise, a slogan, flash mobs etc., but participants still look like they have no idea or enthusiasm for what they are participating within.
