but it was infuriating to witness @GotabayaR and his hired goons trying to break up a peaceful protest using guns. There were children, youth, and elderly in the crowd! Why bring guns into their midst?Who are you trying to shoot? #GoHomeRajapaksas
The whole country is on the streets protesting peacefully demanding this government to dissolve, the Rajapaksas to leave and for wrongdoers to be put in jail. And they still think this is a game.
With their toy solders, they play with the lives of 22 Mn people. This must stop!
This cannot go on. What more pressure can we put on the Rajapaksas as they ridicule the mandate of the people? The North and minorities experienced it, now it’s a rude awakening to the South. We’ve have been saying this for years. They have no regard for your lives. And that is why
They have to go.Their henchmen and all who lick their boots must go. We have to ensure that this moment is not lost. We have to seize this opportunity for a better #SriLanka. A Sri Lanka without Rajapaksas. A Sri Lanka that we can be proud of #SriLankaProtests✊🏽 #GoHomeRajapaksas
Respect for the police on duty, who let protesters be and as you see on the video they actually tried to stop the Army bikes and take their keys away. Also, they ushered me back through the barrier.
That’s enough ‘objective’ protest ‘covering’ for today. #SriLankaProtests
To all who are asking. I am home.
Might join the young ones at Independence Square later for singing and some fun protests 😊
Cheers!
This is the earlier clip… when I ask the officer if they are playing with our lives he shrugs indicating he doesn’t know. The police were admirable in trying to stop the bikes. But they were unidentified men with weapons in bikes without number plates. Why weren’t they arrested?
They are from the army and there is an enquiry against the police officers who once tried to do their job of protecting the people.
@GotabayaR and the army commander, so you send armed men to intimidate children, youth and peaceful protesters? Or to shoot them? Which one is it?
This is the reality of the North and East. These goon squads have had plenty of training before. I hope this is an eye opener to most of us in the South.
So they are going to punish the police for once doing their job?
Why were armed personnel sent to a peaceful protest in the first place?
We know these are familiar intimidation tactics!
But they will not save your presidency. #GoHomeGota #GoHomeRajapaksas
Some of you might have come across this. This was an advert for a writer a couple of months back. 1 Mn. salary and a Benz with a driver. This was forwarded to me. I had a sneaking feeling and I applied…
After a couple of calls, I got called for an interview. Confidentiality was one of the main things they expected. Long story short I didn’t go. My friends jokingly said that I would be found in a Rajagiriya canal the next day. Anyway, the point being, they have money.
1 Mn. salary for a writer (This was before the rupee became worthless), is a huge sum. Well above the market rate.
We can only speculate how much money the Navy and the Gov lost due to the floating armoury. But looking at pics of Senadipathi’s son, seems like a lot.
Before chaos unfolded yesterday, I came across an after-school #protest by students, teachers and parents of Ananda Balika, Vidyalaya, Pitakotte.
The teachers and students, some soaked by rain, were chanting slogans in unison. This is the sort of political education we need.
Because our education is partially responsible for this country’s lack of political maturity. We are taught to follow. Dissent is always discouraged. If we are taught from a young age the political history of this country, voicing opinions, equity and class and accountability,
We might not elect crooks to rule over us. We might not go to sleep after each election, letting gov. function without the people’s oversight. We may just build a socio-political system that is accountable and a politically-conscious general public. #SriLankaProtests
I listened to the whole speech of @sajithpremadasa and he started out by saying we must change the Executive Presidency which prevents PM Prez power struggles!
Then he ended the speech with abolishment.
I hope that that final part was preplanned and was not on a whim.
Sri Lanka has a long list of leaders who said that in the past and ‘went back on it’.
Let’s hope @sajithpremadasa keeps to his word. We will be watching.
Encouraging to see a lot of youthful energy at the protests. However, let’s not forget our purpose.
Ousting this power-hungry, corrupt family and its equally corrupt satellites will not be easy. These are only early days. Difficult times are ahead and we must persevere.
Getting people to the street is the first step. Understanding why we are on the streets and the history leading up to it are quintessential for this collective struggle.
For one:
‘Gota Go Home’ and ‘Go Home Rajapaksas’ are such powerful, loaded phrases. There was a time
When people disappeared for speaking up. When activists, journalists were killed in broad daylight. When there was a regime of oppression, fear and intimidation
When 6.9 Mn said yes to Rajapaksas they also said yes to that. That’s why for some it’s difficult to forget and forgive
Johnston to Highways... this government does not want to correct itself. It wants to further take us to ruin. It's no secret that Johnston is behind the controversial bid to award a contract to a local consortium at a price $822 Mn higher. sundaytimes.lk/220306/news/pu…
