OK, Let's see if I have this straight. The UCP is getting Albertans screaming mad about an extra 2¢ at the pump. But at the same time they want to change our health care system so anyone wanting good care will have to pay $$$ hundreds or thousands more a month for insurance? 1/11
US: "In 2020, the average national cost for health insurance is $456 for an individual and $1,152 for a family per month." Even after shelling out all that money, month after month, you still have to pay deductibles or co-pays when you make a claim. 2/11 ehealthinsurance.com/resources/indi…
And, if we look at the US example, even after paying exorbitant insurance premiums, your treatment may not be covered because insurance companies really don't like paying out. It's in the fine print. 3/11
verywellhealth.com/health-insurer…
Meanwhile, the public system will be starved as the most qualified health care workers are lured away to work at for-profit health care, making the choice for patients really between privately-owned for-profit care, and public or "charity" hospitals. 4/11
managedhealthcareexecutive.com/view/the-u-s-h…
There is a finite number of doctors, nurses and other health care providers available. If the UCP wants to set up and run a parallel for-profit system, it follows that one system or both, will experience a shortage of trained healthcare professionals. 5/11
Say you have a cake, and everyone is entitled to a piece. But there are too many people wanting cake. If you cut the cake in half and give half to a company to sell, you still have the same amount of cake... 6/11
Before you know it, the company will be scraping the icing off the free cake, because, you know, people are paying for the for-profit cake & they need to feel they are getting their money's worth. The cake for those who can't pay will get whittled down and made unappealing. 7/11
Furthermore, because for-profit entities exist to make a profit (it's right there in the name), some percentage of every dollar spent on care will go to enhance the profit margin, making for-profits either more expensive, or less effective. Or both. 8/11
commonwealthfund.org/publications/i…
As this infographic illustrates, the US has the highest per-capita healthcare spending in the OECD. This seems to be because the provision of care is modeled as a profit-making industry. Costs go up when investors need their cut. 9/11
So, where were we? Oh yes. The UCP wants you to be outraged that the federal government is charging a carbon levy so we don't turn the earth into a smouldering ruin this century. A carbon levy that most will get a rebate on. 10/11
Meanwhile, the UCP is fine w/ people having to spend out of pocket to access health care & possibly die or go bankrupt if they don't have the money, so that their buddies in the insurance & healthcare industries can make a profit. Sound about right?

Honestly, the more I hear conservative politicians speak, the more convinced I am that they view the early years of the Industry Revolution as some sort of golden age: no minimum wage, employers could make workers work as many hours as they wanted them to, 1/18
no workplace health & safety, no consumer or environmental protections, the entire system set up so the robber barons (aka the "Captains of Industry") could become obscenely wealthy while everyone else was reduced to serfdom. 2/18
And what happened to put a stop to that for awhile? Workers organized. They realized who the villains were in this scenario, and also that the bosses needed their labour. You can own all the factories, but if no one will run them, they are worthless. 3/18

What is going on in Canadian news media? This does not apply to ALL reporters, or all media sources all the time, but it applies to many of them all the time and all of them some of the time. #cdnmedia #cdnpoli 1/12
Reporters ask "gotcha" questions, then report on a lack of answer. Like reporters at the start of the pandemic demanding to know when the pandemic would end, then posting stories about how PMJT "refuses" to tell them when the pandemic will end. 2/12
News completely ignores good news stories, like water advisories being lifted. This does a disservice to all Canadians. Good news is worthy of reporting and is, indeed, important to report. If you only report things you deem negative, the media actually skews the news. 3/12

#abpoli Remember when TFG was impeached, and yet stayed President, like nothing happened? It will be the same for Kenney. No one on the UCP executive will resign. Constituency Associations can fuss and issue ultimatims all they like. 1/
Disgruntled MLAs can posture and demand. The leadership review now seems to be a foregone conclusion, but should Kenney somehow get < 50%, he's not going anywhere. It's not legally binding. 2/
And with the shift to mail-in ballots, the fix is surely in, so it's moot anyway. Hell, he doesn't even really have to call an election until the 5 year anniversary of his election in 2019. There's nothing anyone can actually do to remove him. 3/

Why does someone choosing to continue to wear a mask enrage some who choose not to? It's a serious question. I don't think everyone who will begin going maskless tomorrow will be angry at those who remain masked, but some will be very angry, and aggressive. 1/5
I would like to understand how those who are maskless feel that someone wearing a mask affects them. Why does it matter to them? Why does it matter enough to some that they will say or do things to the masked person? Again, serious question. 2/5
I mean, it seems that a person wearing a mask is not interfering with a maskless person at all. So why are they so deeply offended? What is the reasoning? Those who say on social media that they will continue to mask are being answered with insults and derision. 3/5

Oh my! There is a lot to unpack here.

Jason Kenney, premier of Alberta, is crowing that he got together with a bunch of US Republican governors and wrote a letter. 1/20 #cdnpoli
"Today, I've signed a letter along with Premier Scott Moe, Governor Gianforte, and 15 OTHER American governors..." Are you confused about your national identity, Jason? Do you want so badly to be American that you are pretending that you are? 2/20
You wrote this letter, then announced it on Twitter, and you are accusing the federal government of political theatre? You have no concept of irony, do you?

What does one do if one lives in a country where about 3/4 of the people are reasonable, who care about others, want to have their taxes work towards the public good, want universal health care and excellent public education, but the official opposition wants none of that? 1/20
What if one lives in a country where the official opposition spends all their time and energy trying to unseat the government? Who actually makes things up to try to turn the public against the government they elected? 2/

Who may even have had more than a passing involvement in an coup attempt? CPC MPs, along with provincial conservative MLAs, were seen to be sympathetic to the convoy, some even meeting with them, buying them coffee and donuts, etc. 3/
