"On #COVID19, there’s good news. Last week, the lowest number of COVID-19 deaths was recorded since the early days of the pandemic. However, some countries are still witnessing serious spikes in cases, which is putting pressure on hospitals"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "This week, the #COVID19 IHR Emergency Committee met and unanimously agreed that the pandemic remains a public health emergency. I appreciated their advice and agree that far from being the time to drop our guard, this is the moment to work even harder to save lives"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "Specifically this means investing so that #COVID19 tools are equitably distributed and we simultaneously strengthen health systems as outlined in the 2022 WHO Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "But it’s not just 💉. Over the past 2 years, WHO has continued to update its clinical management guidelines & hone its recommendations based on the latest science. Oxygen, corticosteroids & antivirals are helping to further break the link between infection & death"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "Diagnostics are also improving and becoming more accessible. However, just as I said last year that trickle down vaccination is not an effective strategy for fighting a deadly respiratory virus; trickle-down treatment and testing are similarly reckless"-@DrTedros#COVID19
@DrTedros "Diagnosing at-risk patients early enough for new antivirals to be effective is essential & should be available to everyone, everywhere. In addition, higher testing & sequencing rates will be vital for tracing existing & identifying new variants as they emerge"-@DrTedros#COVID19
@DrTedros "WHO scientists continue to work with thousands of experts around the 🌎 to track & monitor the #COVID19 virus. At present there are a number of Omicron sub-lineages we’re following closely, incl. BA.2, BA.4 & BA.5 & another recombinant detected, made up of BA.1 & BA.2"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "This virus has over time become more transmissible and it remains deadly especially for the unprotected and unvaccinated that don’t have access to health care and antivirals"-@DrTedros#COVID19
@DrTedros "The best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated and boosted when recommended.
Continue wearing masks – especially in crowded indoor spaces.
And for the indoors, keep the air fresh by opening windows and doors, and invest in good ventilation"-@DrTedros#COVID19
@DrTedros "I've spoken before about the need for a generational agreement that would ignite the investments, collaboration & engagement we need to protect our 🌏 & people. Member States are negotiating this & WHO has opened up the conversation to the 🌍 through public hearings"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "I am encouraged by the rich diversity of people from around the 🌎 that raised their voices at the public hearing of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body, which is tasked with developing a new instrument to prepare the world for future health threats"-@DrTedros#PandemicAccord
@DrTedros "Everyone has been affected by the #COVID19 pandemic and every voice matters. There’ll be further opportunities to engage in the process throughout the year. A new #PandemicAccord is our best collective defence against known virus’s and of course the next disease X"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "Tomorrow marks 50 days since Russia invaded #Ukraine. 4.6 million refugees have left the country. Thousands of civilians have died, incl. children. There have been 119 verified attacks on health care. Health services continue to be severely disrupted"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "For the sake of humanity, I urge Russia to come back to the table & to work for peace. In the meantime, humanitarian corridors must be established so that medical supplies, food & water can be delivered & civilians can move to safety"-@DrTedros#Ukraine
@DrTedros "To date, WHO has received almost 53% of its funding requirement for #Ukraine for the first three months. I would like to thank Canada, Ireland, Japan, Norway, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Switzerland and the @UNCERF for their timely contributions"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros@UNCERF "I would also like to thank @eu_echo, Germany, Saudi Arabia @KSRelief_EN and the United States for committing additional support to the health response in #Ukraine and neighbouring countries. But additional resources will be required to cover longer-term needs"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros@UNCERF@eu_echo@KSRelief_EN "In #Tigray, it is now 3 weeks since a truce was called. After one of the longest blockades in history, there is a need for 100 trucks per day containing life saving supplies"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros@UNCERF@eu_echo@KSRelief_EN "Since the truce, there should have been at least 2,000 trucks going into #Tigray. But there has been only 20 trucks in total – representing one percent of the need. In effect the siege by the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces continues"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros@UNCERF@eu_echo@KSRelief_EN "To avert the humanitarian calamity and hundreds of thousands more people from dying, we need unfettered humanitarian access from those reinforcing the blockade. As well as medicines, the immediate need is for food and fuel to be allowed into the region"-@DrTedros#Tigray
@DrTedros@UNCERF@eu_echo@KSRelief_EN "The Horn of Africa and Sahel are at high risk of famine and many people are already starving or food insecure and increasingly on the move. I am deeply concerned about the impact this will have not only on health but on overall national and regional security"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros@UNCERF@eu_echo@KSRelief_EN "The course, available in 11 languages, has been completed by nearly 30,000 people, and our goal is that by the end of 2024, that number will be 5 million. There is no health without #mentalhealth"-@DrTedros
Finding & reporting every case is 🔑 to defeating #ChagasDisease - a potentially life-threatening illness, transmitted through contact with the faeces or urine of a triatomine bug found mainly in Latin America.
About 6 to 7 million people are infected with #ChagasDisease, causing 10 000 deaths yearly. Most infections occur in Latin America but the disease is increasingly detected in other parts of the 🌐, with 75 million at risk of infection
In many countries, there are low detection rates of this 'silent disease' & frequent barriers to access adequate healthcare. Equitable access to health care & services for everyone affected by #ChagasDisease are crucial.
"It’s a real pleasure to be here in Washington, D.C., on #WorldHealthDay. Over the past few days, I’ve had a series of very productive meetings with representatives of the Administration, senators, house members and other leaders"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "We renewed old friendships & forged new ones. We discussed #COVID19, the war in #Ukraine, and WHO’s 5 major priorities for the next 5 years, incl. supporting countries to make a paradigm shift towards promoting health and preventing disease, not just treating it"-@DrTedros
Today is #WorldHealthDay!
Environmental factors - including climate change - claim 13 million lives every year.
Stop burning fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas for a #HealthierTomorrow
Climate change is a threat to human health, driving diseases like cancer, asthma, heart disease, and mosquito-borne diseases like dengue bit.ly/WorldHealthDay…
Shocking!
99% - or almost the entire world's population breathes air with unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter & nitrogen dioxide, and threatens their health.
More: bit.ly/3uW6wfC
Over 6,000 cities in 117 countries are now monitoring air quality, but the people living in them are still breathing air that exceeds WHO air quality limits, with people in low & middle-income countries suffering the highest exposures bit.ly/3uW6wfC
Particulate matter, especially PM2.5, is capable of penetrating deep into the lungs & entering the bloodstream, causing cardiovascular, cerebrovascular (stroke) & respiratory impacts bit.ly/3uW6wfC
Today is World Autism Awareness Day. With appropriate support from caregivers, the health and education sectors and society at large, autistic people can live happy, fulfilled lives.
The abilities and needs of autistic people vary and evolve over time. Health-care services need to be designed with the participation of autistic people
to promote personalized care and respond to their evolving needs.
