If we’re going to talk about combatting anti-Blackness provincially, I feel like that has to start from within institutions and parties that uphold it.
Someone tell @StevenDelDuca that it was the Ontario Liberals that passed the Anti-Racism Act of 2017 and then didn’t actually…mandate race-based data be collected.
Rather the legislation just… politely suggested it.
Uhm, @AndreaHorwath , respectfully if you’re giving credit about legislation that impacts the Black community at a debate hosted by and for Black voters, that was written by a Black MPP, you should actually… give them credit?
So anyway, thanks @JILLSLASTWORD !
Recognize the (often unpaid, unrecognized) additional labour of Black people! #onpoli
It’s wild to me but @MikeSchreiner is the only one actually consistently answering these questions and tying it back to Black people & Black communities.
@StevenDelDuca up first, comments on how “appalling” it is re: systemic barriers.
Goes on to speak on de-streaming, his children’s privilege, says “every Black Ontarian will be…on the field”.
Now @MikeSchreiner : agrees w/ elimination of streaming, adequate councillors to support youth choosing from all potential pathways, affordable post-secondary options.
Reverse OSAP & PSE cuts, loans -> grants, targeting women, racialized & Black youth for opportunities.
Audience question by Weston Green re: investments in non-police response investments.
Horwath: Issued paper years ago on this with plan to respond to mental health and addictions calls.
Schreiner: separate crisis response line for mental health calls. Focuses on health response, and commitment to permanent supportive housing with supports for people included.
Del Duca: All first responders need to be properly trained, not one-time, ongoing for deescalation. Also, help responders fight anti-racism (?).
He clearly didn’t pay attention during the #GeorgeFloyd advocacy.
They’re now wrapping up with closing statements.
What a night… in terms of who ‘won’ this debate, I’ve got thoughts, but it certainly wasn’t “Doug No Broughtupsy Ford”.
Simply raising the #OW and #ODSP rates isn’t good enough.
Some thoughts: 1) If raising the rates is an interim measure towards a #UBI#GLBI, fine. But #OW and #ODSP are riddled with barriers and were not meant to create a living wage.
What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.
