I saw #Happening last night. Set in 1960s France and based on the Annie Ernaux memoir, it is the most vivid portrayal of (illegal) abortion I have ever seen and will stay with me. It is on general release via @IFCFilms in the U.S. May 6.
I know what it is like to have an "illegal" abortion. I wrote about it here and will be writing more about #Happening soon and The Janes, an upcoming @HBO documentary soon.

My essay is also available as an audio essay (click on the link above) and in Arabic.

I had my 1st abortion in Egypt, where abortion remains illegal in almost all cases. And my 2nd abortion in the U.S. where abortion rights are being gutted feministgiant.com/p/-?s=w
"I wrote Happening to preserve the memory of the savagery inflicted on millions of girls and women," Annie Ernaux #Happening @IFCFilms
theguardian.com/film/2022/apr/…
"In the pre-Roe v. Wade era –– a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois –– the Janes provided low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11,000 women." #TheJanes @HBO hbo.com/movies/the-jan… A group of women in bikinis and swimsuits standing together,
"The Janes tells the story of a group of unlikely outlaws. Defying the state legislature that outlawed abortion, the Catholic Church that condemned it & the Chicago Mob that was profiting from it,the members of Jane risked their personal & professional lives to help women in need"
My "illegal" abortion in Egypt was by a (male) OB/GYN I found through my boyfriend's cousin. Criminalizing abortion doesn't eradicate it nor makes it rare. It makes it dangerous & often deadly for the poorest and most vulnerable people who can get pregnant feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-…
It took me 25 years to be able to write about my abortions.

Why?

I have asked that of myself over and over. And to answer, and to fill in the years of silence, I will write about them again and again. feministgiant.com

Looking forward to seeing #Happening via @IFCFilms tonight. I’ll be writing about this and forthcoming documentary about abortion via @HBO called The Janes soon Poster for a full called Happening: profile of a white WomenPoster for a film called Happening; a woman dressed in muggy
In 1996 I had an “illegal” abortion in Egypt and in 2000 I had a “legal” abortion in the United States.

These films about abortion are not abstract for me. They are real and harrowing and triggering. feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-… #RoeVWade
And watching white, Christian women destroy Roe v Wade in the U.S. and help build a theocracy is enraging feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-te… #RoeVWade

Wonderful to see @Osunsweetnsour, creator/host of The Black Girls Guide to Surviving Menopause podcast and author of the Zine “Messages from the Menopausal Multiverse" in this article on Black and women of colour's experience of menopause.

I am thrilled that @Osunsweetnsour agreed to contribute to the menopause anthology #BloodyHell that I am editing for @unbounders. Menopause is about more than just white, cis women. Our anthology is global and gender expansive unbound.com/books/bloody-h…

Trigger warning: rape, sexual violence, suicide, genocide

For too long, rape has been considered an almost natural result of war, as if soldiers and rebels and fighters just stumbled upon it, as if it were something that was inevitable rather than deliberate.
Rape and sexual violence have always been used—deliberately, systematically, intentionally—in conflict and war to terrorize women (and sometimes to emasculate men). Women’s bodies are considered proxy battlegrounds; an extension of those battlefields.
The latest reminder: Ukrainian human rights group have accused Russian troops of using rape as a weapon of war. The official ombudswoman for human rights said she had recorded “horrific cases of sexual violence by Russian troops in Bucha and other places. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Everything Everywhere All at Once is the perfect menopause allegory film. I don’t care if that’s not what The Daniels had in mind when they wrote and directed it. It’s art. It’s out there. And my menopause claims it! feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me… #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce
