These are the scenes that break my heart. Yesterday this knapsack, full of life's essentials, was left under this tree. Today, no one has claimed it, it has been gone through through and half of it dumped out. What happened to this person? Where are they? 💔 #toronto
I worry so much about ppl making the transition from housing to homelessness. esp #pwd. it is one of the biggest shocks and most difficult things anyone will endure in life. there's no manual "so, now you're homeless!" there is little to no support.
you're making a difficult adjustment in every way but most importantly psychologically. community is most important at this time but when do you go? especially with the embarrassment and shame and sense of failure that can accompany. our egos can be cruellest at these moments.
maybe you are being renovicted. maybe you're leaving an abusive relationship. maybe you just got out of jail. maybe you came home one day and the doors were locked. maybe you're on #odsp and got behind. worked w people who have experienced all these situations this year.
Ppl who are going to transition into an unhoused existence need more support than almost anyone you can imagine. It is a new life without support and without guardrails. Family and friends may rise to the occasion, but may not. Once again, @fordnation policies
do not provide for this. you have a hearing. you are evicted. you get the number for central intake. the trauma around this random, awful process is unknown and none of this is currently captured as data or human experience. 💔

Months. Hundreds of people. For 24 people living outside. The city has lost its mind over encampments. "Toronto planned encampment clearing operation for months, built profiles of residents" | CP24.comcp24.com/news/toronto-p…
holy shit. somebody noticed. 👀👀👀
did i mention how ridiculous it is that there are "sides"
Absolutely overwhelmed by requests for assistance atm. MAiD is changing the equation for so many. There are so many people in despair it feels like we are going to witness something truly horrific unfold if nothing is done. The federal government MUST pay attention.
Disabled ppl are the biggest minority group in this country. We are staring at *voluntary* eugenics. We are staring at mass voluntary death of disabled ppl around this country because they are unable to live. It is URGENT that @CQualtro@JustinTrudeau hold a summit
What YOU need to do is support this MOST IMPORTANT INITIATIVE in the country demanding that benefits double. the most vulnerable population in #canada is under siege by covid and poverty and NOW when ppl need us most ... we must act. How?
1. Reach the public on social. Just post this every day. Cut + paste:
@GGCanada disabled people across Canada are living on $1000/mo when the poverty line is $2000. Provinces have frozen rates + pwd are choosing MAiD. #raisetherates to double @JustinTrudeau@cafreeland
i'd like you to think for a moment about what it must be like to be 100% financially dependent on a system that is attempting to cut every imaginable cost associated with your staying alive. First of all, you are expected to survive on $1169 a month in Ontario. Which
means every single person who has ever even thought about this is experiencing cognitive dissonance. Any rational person knows that is impossible. But we gloss over it - oh, there must be more somewhere. There isn't. And the benefits shrink continuously and without
warning. So there you are with your $1169, ($850 of which just went to an noisy, infested non accessible unit with faulty heating in the basement that no one shovels the steps to all winter, so now it's $319) and you have four prescriptions to pick up to get you through the
ok any minute now i really am going to calm down but y'all. three of them stood at the bar for FORTY FIVE MINUTES in front of at least thirty people trying SO HARD to kick me out of the bar. threatening to call the police. like you would not BELIEVE the pressure. STOOD MY GROUND.
these big guys were like "leave NOW" and i was like - no. (my mom was not there at this point) I am not leaving. And they said - you need to leave. Said I am not leaving. They eventually said ok, then we are calling the police. And i said - fine. you are going to have to drag me
Absolutely fucking livid. Tried to check my mom + i into the Royal York tonight. Not only could i not they threatened to call the police + have us ejected from the premises. Why? I have no idea. You owe my poor mother + i a huge apology @FairmontRYH. Will never forget this.
Things that were said to me tonight by employees of the Royal York, a place a patronize REGULARLY and had dinner + drinks at today: "well where is your mom?" "why isn't she here with you?" "how much have you had to drink tonight?" "we have to ask you to leave the premises now"
and fyi we had been there since 2 pm so they knew the answers to these questions already. just absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable and incomprehensible behaviour. sexist? i don't know. but utterly offensive.
