Time for @StevenDelDuca @AndreaHorwath to stop attacking one another. Spend this last week of the campaign talking about your policies and reviewing Doug Ford's record:
- failure to use #COVID19 funds & where r they now?
- cuts to public health funding pre-covid19 never restored
- destroyed N95 stockpiles and failed to restore them
- froze nurses salaries when this province needed them the most in the past century!
- failed to raise #ODSP rates out of severe poverty (45% below Canada's poverty line)
- cancelled #ODSP raises/no inflation incr.
- Failed to heed expert advice urging PPE for LTCH/RHs
- License plates/Buck-a-Beer 🤦🏼‍♂️
- Privatization of LTCH/RH and poorer COVID19 outcomes among some of their residents

If you are disabled, this is the election to ensure you vote. For the first time #ODSP has been a top issue. Your lives, your future is being debated. There are 2.6 million of us in Ontario. You have the power to influence YOUR future. #elxn43 /1
The 4 parties with elected MPPs have laid out their plans for us. Each party has decided whether or not we should live in poverty and how much we should live on. Most candidates have not taken the #1169challenge to say how we can live on their promises. #elxn43 /2 The $1169 Challenge. The $1227 Blue Steak Special. The $128
The PCs have reluctantly promised 5% increase that wasn’t in their budget. The Liberals have promised 10% this year, 10% in 2023. NDP 20% this year and 80% in 2023. Greens? 100% this year. The 2020 poverty line was $2214. Only Greens will beat that in 2022. Inflation is 6.7% /3 The ODSP climb out of poverty. Starting at the bottom. We re

ODSP - To all persons advocating for better #ODSP rates, you've accomplished a miracle today the likes of which I knew you could.

You've helped to better, the best case scenario most likely to win*.

Now we need two more Miracles.
We need to elevate the worst case scenarios.
If The Greens or the NDP win, either instantly or within 1 year you will have an at poverty livable income for the first time in 29 years. However the OLP & PCs are still viable and potentially even more likely scenarios of winning the vote and their platforms for ODSP stink.
.@fordnation & @StevenDelDuca's ODSP Platforms as they stand, PLEDGE to KEEP you in poverty until either the end of time or until the Canada Disability Benefit is released, which ever comes first.

That's not acceptable & must be changed so no matter who wins, you'll survive. 3/3

Come on @StevenDelDuca - You can do better for #ODSP than "10/10/2/2/2oh they died".

Play back our zoom from March 28th.
(you recorded it, right ?)

Listen to what the community has been through.
there's -NO- reason the OLP platform should be comparable to Fords 1/ #OntarioVotes
Right now your tied for 4th best platform for #ODSP.

LONG term, Ford's is actually better.
because while you've got those two 10's..
you're gonna chase it forever with 2% ?

Ford's is horrible at 5% but it can never get worse with inflation indexing, yours can @StevenDelDuca 2/
if we have 5 straight years of 5% inflation, the PC plan puts people on ODSP at $1566 (which still is literally criminally low. 2027 and $1566 ? Jesus Christ)

Your plan with two 10% bumps chased by 2% raises after puts ODSP at just $1501 in 2027.

Do you realize @fordnation that you have a legal obligation to ensure #ODSP is at a livable level that does not harm the community ?

@CityCynthia made you aware of the harm being done to recipients in Sept '20. Your 5% promise, shows acknowledgement but a lack of fulfilment. 1/

These are the scenes that break my heart. Yesterday this knapsack, full of life's essentials, was left under this tree. Today, no one has claimed it, it has been gone through through and half of it dumped out. What happened to this person? Where are they? 💔 #toronto
I worry so much about ppl making the transition from housing to homelessness. esp #pwd. it is one of the biggest shocks and most difficult things anyone will endure in life. there's no manual "so, now you're homeless!" there is little to no support.
you're making a difficult adjustment in every way but most importantly psychologically. community is most important at this time but when do you go? especially with the embarrassment and shame and sense of failure that can accompany. our egos can be cruellest at these moments.

What the fuck is not giving disabled people enough money to live if not "outside pressure or influence" to encourage us to unalive ourselves?

We can't Consent if we have no other options. That's not how consent works. Screenshot of Canadian gove...
Multiple people have sought MAID after advocating for Years to get access to housing that would have saved their lives. They didn't want to die. They could have lived good lives. If they could afford to live them.

That is not voluntary consent.
I am Not considering MAID. But I Am currently looking for housing and unable to find affordable, accessible, scent-free housing in Ontario. It's terrifying to know that other people in similar circumstances got forced into this route.

A hot take that shouldn’t be a hot take:

Simply raising the #OW and #ODSP rates isn’t good enough.
Some thoughts:
1) If raising the rates is an interim measure towards a #UBI #GLBI, fine. But #OW and #ODSP are riddled with barriers and were not meant to create a living wage.
What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.

Some people living with disabilities say they are applying for assisted dying because they would rather die than struggle to survive on ODSP. The fact is no government has significantly raised rates since Mike Harris cut them by 21% 27 years ago. #onpoli
Here is the video version of my story on #ODSP. I really believe this is an important question, how do we as a society want to treat people with disabilities? What does it say when they are considering assisted dying because they can't survive on $1,169 a month?#onpoli
Apologies, it would help if I included the link... #ODSP #onpoli…

i'd like you to think for a moment about what it must be like to be 100% financially dependent on a system that is attempting to cut every imaginable cost associated with your staying alive. First of all, you are expected to survive on $1169 a month in Ontario. Which
means every single person who has ever even thought about this is experiencing cognitive dissonance. Any rational person knows that is impossible. But we gloss over it - oh, there must be more somewhere. There isn't. And the benefits shrink continuously and without
warning. So there you are with your $1169, ($850 of which just went to an noisy, infested non accessible unit with faulty heating in the basement that no one shovels the steps to all winter, so now it's $319) and you have four prescriptions to pick up to get you through the

Why, other than it being the right thing to do, should you care about disability or welfare if you're not on it?

Put simply, self interest.

If you think you can separate their material conditions from yours, you're deluding yourself. 🧵

#Canlab #LivingWage
The low wages and rollback of labour rights for the worker under neoliberalism are connected to the low rates and degradation of those on benefits. The insufficiency of benefit programs, feeds a ready supply of labour to low wage paying employers. Trapping the working class

into a cycle of poverty whether they earn a wage or receive assistance.

If you are poor and look down on people on disability or welfare and support punitive measures intrusiveness, cuts and austerity etc. to social welfare recipients, what you are unwittingly supporting

@Irek_K Saw what you said regarding the Canada Disability Benefit today. Why are the Liberals being so tight-lipped regarding this benefit? You speak about its urgency, but you've yet to reveal details regarding eligibility, amounts, or even a timeline.
Disabled Canadians & Families of those with #pwd cannot afford to wait 3 years for the "consultation" you wanted to do in the 2021 Budget. Has that study even fully started, by the way? You brought up the DIAP again, is that part of the study or a separate thing?
In addition, you mention how this will help "hundreds of thousands". When you have around 40% of 6 MILLION Canadians living with a disability in poverty, hearing that this might go to so few scares me as a Disabled Canadian, despite the fact I'm currently "able" enough to work.

The cost of living is skyrocketing, inflation rates are going up. So why aren’t social-assistance rates too?

@OntarioGreens continue to call on the Premier to double the rates for #ODSP 1/4
#PWD have been asking for help during COVID, struggling to survive on a maximum of $1,169 a month — all while the price of food and housing is going through the roof.

Over the past year, the cost of shelter has gone up 4.8%, and food is up 3.9%. #onpoli 2/4
We know persons #PWD have borne a disproportionate burden of the pandemic.

Ontarians shouldn’t have to choose between paying their rent or putting food on the table. The situation is dire. #ODSPoverty 3/4

Dear @jwaldag, @Shafqat_Ali_1, @AryaCanada & @JaimeBattiste

This past Friday was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is now the second which has come and gone with no tangible movement towards the promised "#CanadaDisabilityBenefit" while at the same time 1/9
It' the second year in a row that another Party has attempted to pass a Federal #Disability Benefit in which your party has rejected. If you want a short statement about my thoughts then it's simple.. "Shit or get off the pot".

If you want something more eloquent, read on.. 2/9
Now I don't know just how many Disabled people there are who depends on #CPPD, #ODSP, #AISH, #SAID, and all the others without cute 4 letter short forms but I can tell you combined they account for roughly 50% of the homeless..

The Dishonourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Disability Exclusion, said during her side event at the United Nations that her government took longer than it should have to provide one-time $600 to approx. ⅓ of Canada’s disabled (DTC):…
Minister Qualtrough continued, saying that her government is thus “determined to not let history repeat itself,” and that part of their so doing: implement a Disability Inclusion Action Plan with new Canadian Disability Benefit.

But their Budget 2021 proves that that was a lie. ImageImage
In the Budget 2021, Carla Qualtrough’s government commits $12-million over the next *three years* on consultations for reforming their benefits’ eligibility processes.

It took more than half a year to provide the aforementioned $600; the Minister then said, they wouldn’t repeat.

Dear @cafreeland, let me save you four years, at least a thousand lives and $12,000,000 in 6 tweets or less.

Your going to commit $12,000,000 for discussions on how to include the most people possible and what to provide in a #Canada #disability benefit. It REALLY is #simple 1/6
In fact, it's SO simple that I'm using up extra words in my promised six tweets or less to highlight JUST how easy it is.

YOU'RE going to ask around, maybe get.. 200 or 300 opinions.. 80% will be from organizations. 70% of those will kiss your ass. half of the individuals 2/6
you ask will ask an opinion from, will ask for so much because they've had so little (for SO LONG) you'll discount them anyways. Here is what you need to do and how to do it. The next three tweets are simple. it's "How to do it" and "What to give" 3/6 #PWD #ODSP #SAID #AISH #CPPD

If I read #federalbudget of #Canada Correctly
@cafreeland committed $12M over THREE YEARS to TALKING about how to implement a disability benefit some point in the future (maybe)
(But $13M to ensure MAID happens)

So no #inclusion & #inclusive recovery for #ODSP #CPPD #SAID #AISH
At this rate, with what the provinces are doing to #PWD @JustinTrudeau @cafreeland You won't have to worry about #MAID or a #Disabilities Benefit cause the problem is going to "Solve itself"
They Can't Afford to live NOW Damn it !
3 weeks to invent #CERB
4 YEARS to maybe help PWD
How many more times are they supposed to say
"Maybe next year, people will care"
How many more decades ?
How many more wasted PWD lives because
Canada won't put the well being disabled people equal to those who are "Able" ?

How many more GENERATIONS @JustinTrudeau ?

I’m so fucking sick of this shit, we’re now in the middle of a third wave, with a province wide shutdown, and we’re getting no help from the government despite Covid cases rising here in Ontario, and with everything from increased costs of using grocery delivery services ... 1/9
the rising cost of groceries, plus having to buy PPE, this is, well, let’s just call it what it is, the genocide and culling of disabled people by the government (both provincially and federally), especially when the only option in front of us is MAID ... 2/9
which the government has made clear by passing Bill C7, honestly how the fuck am I and others relying on social assistance expected to survive this pandemic, hell we’re not even prioritized early on the vaccine list despite many who are immunocompromised ... 3/9

@yyzsxm @Toulla101 @pawprints1986 @fordnation SO many things to hit at with this

There are 500,000 on #ODSP.
if its that easy, why are there only a couple hundred on here fighting, some of which aren't even ON odsp, their just fighting for those who are ?

What does that say about their ability to "tweet all day" ? 1/12
@yyzsxm @Toulla101 @pawprints1986 @fordnation do you know how much physical effort it takes to type out a tweet ? next to none. I can tweet with my left hand while brushing my tweet with my right while tap dancing if i was so inclined to do so.. do you think the people on ODSP are able to do the same ? 2/12
@yyzsxm @Toulla101 @pawprints1986 @fordnation you can literally tweet from the toilet while having an obstructed bowl attack.. do you think you could work, that you could put proper effort in to a job that someone would pay you for, while your stomach feels like its twisting inside out at random ? - (hint, nope !) 3/12

THREAD: Toronto – OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas says proposed changes to the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) announced today would create chaos and uncertainty for many of the province’s most vulnerable people @OPSEU #Odsp
Thomas says the changes would force those with disabilities to navigate an entirely new support system, and he’s concerned such a proposal was put forward in the middle of a major public health crisis.
“This is the wrong time to introduce sweeping changes and disrupt the lives of our most vulnerable,” said Thomas. “Despite all the rhetoric, these changes aren’t about helping people with disabilities. They’re about dumping more work on already-overstretched municipalities and
