Since Ontarians are on the cusp of choosing who will lead their province and in what direction, I thought I would reprise this thread: 1/19 #OntarioVotes
Canadians, language matters. Conservatives know this. They have been deliberately changing our terms of reference for years. We have seen them reframe lobbyists as "partners", and regular folks with local concerns as "special interest groups" (negative connotation). 2/19
In this pandemic it has been even more critically important for us to consider the well-being of others. We need to recognize the community we belong to. I suggest we push-back against one of the most insidious changes to popular speech championed by conservatives. 3/19
For many years now, conservatives have referred to Canadians as "tax-payers". This has been done deliberately and consistently. And that choice of words has consequences in the way we think about one another. 4/19
We need to think of Canadians as "citizens", "people", "neighbours", not "tax-payers". It makes a difference. When conservatives speak to "tax-payers" they are immediately excluding all those who are disabled, elderly, unemployed, or working poor, from the body politic. 5/19
Those people are important too. Monetizing people is wrong. It leads to statements like UCP Kenney made about people "with modest levels of human capital" deserving a lower minimum wage. It leads to people accepting that our value is determined by our financial contribution. 6/19
Our value as human beings is not determined by how much we can contribute to the wealth of corporate entities. We are citizens, residents, people, first and foremost, regardless of our ability to work, or our ability to pay taxes. 7/19
We can see now, in the shocking report from the Canadian Armed Forces, that seniors in Long-Term Care facilities have been treated barely better than animals in an industrial farm. Warehoused at the lowest possible cost, to continue bringing in a profit from storage fees. 8/19
The conservatives pushing to reopen the economy regardless of whether it was safe or not, saying it's mostly old people who are dying, so that's alright, suggests they view our senior citizens the way an industrial farm owner views a cow that can't give milk anymore. 9/19
In short, of diminished or spent ability to contribute to profitability. Effectively, a liability on the balance sheet. And this is clearly reflected in the way conservatives have treated seniors in LTC. If they can no longer be useful to the country, they are expendable. 10/19
To further evidence their way of thinking, Doug Ford and the PCs passed legislation protecting the wealthy owners of long-term care facilities from being held accountable for the horrendous deaths of thousands. 11/19
We need to remind ourselves that we are, first of all, members of a society & citizens or residents of a country. We are not "inputs" to an economy. Our value does not depend on our ability to create wealth for corporations. Whatever conservatives may urge to the contrary. 12/19
It is inconvenient to the conservative narrative to recognise the humanity of those who are destitute, addicted, infirm, elderly, disabled, or even the wrong colour or gender or sexual orientation. 13/19
The conservative narrative seeks both to justify disenfranchising those considered "surplus", with no monetary offering to make, and also to divide us and make us accept selfishness and greed through devaluation of others. 14/19
It is time we take back our humanity. It is time we recognize ourselves and all our fellow citizens/residents as having a crucial role in creating and growing our society. We all have non-monetary contributions to make. 15/19
Even the most vulnerable among us, the least able to be self-sufficient and contributing, offers the rest of us lessons in compassion, empathy, responsibility, patience, and caring, an opportunity to appreciate and find joy in things far more valuable than money. 16/19
I encourage everyone to stop using the term "tax-payer". We are citizens or residents, we are community members, we are people. We are not units of production, or lines in a ledger. We are not "human capital stock". We are not here to make someone else rich. 17/19
We are here to live our lives. To love and dream and explore and find meaning. To help one another. To enrich our society with art and music and science and important ideas. To protect the earth for the future. To invest in a better quality of life for all. 18/19
There are a lot of people out there who try to shut down concerns. And I wonder why that is. I am going to give some real-life examples here. 1/16
It is leaked that Roe vs Wade will likely be overturned and women, both in the US and Canada become concerned. In the US, repressive misogynist Republicans are already pushing draconian legislation which would criminalize women for miscarriage. And in Canada... 2/16
We have conservative politicians who are vetted by anti-abortion groups, promoted by those group, possibly funded by those groups, and who, on a fairly regular basis, try to introduce anti-abortion legislation as private members bills. 3/16
Just going non-political for a moment... What is it with the damn weeds? I weed my garden and I swear, new weeds are coming up as soon as I finish doing a row. And I am using a fork, turning over the soil, ripping out the root networks, smashing it all to bit, and still... 1/6
The stuff I want to grow, nothing exotic; peas and beans and carrots and beets, you know, that kind of stuff, if it's a tiny bit too warm or cold, or too wet or too dry, or if you look at them the wrong way, they wilt and die. But thistles? Dandelions? Fescue? Holy crap... 2/6
Nothing seems to kill that stuff. I am not using chemicals, because vegetable garden, and I can't in good conscience support Monsanto et al., but man, I tell ya, this is so much bloody hard work for so little return. 3/6
Say what now? If I park in a no parking spot, my vehicle gets towed & I pay a towing fee AND an impound fee AND a ticket. Not to mention the cost of getting to the impound lot. These yahoos just had their crazy convoy blockading trucks handed right back to them? That's just wrong
And that's just being a few minutes late after the rush hour no parking comes into effect. That's not leaving the vehicle sitting there for days/weeks and obstructing traffic and creating a nuisance, and everything else. No. Nope. This is not right.
I know this because it happened to me once. My Dad was dying of pancreatic cancer and the nurse had called to say I should come in and bring the kids b/c they were going to put him on oxycontin and we should have a visit while he was still fully lucid.
I am so sick of weird, paranoid, judgmental, un-educated, disinformed, angry, bitter people who have an inappropriate, puritanical, unhealthy, puerile interest in other people's genitalia and gender identification. 1/11
Honestly, it must be unbearable for trans people. I have "she/her" in my Twitter handle, and for some reason it makes the crazy, dysfunctional, closed-minded, easily-triggered morons very vocal and abusive. 2/11
It seems to me it is becoming just common courtesy to provide others with your pronouns. Many people now include them in their name label in Zoom meetings, for example. 3/11
When I see things like this, I feel the need to remind everyone how this stuff works. #cdnpoli 1/18
A very long time ago, think feudalism, taxes were collected that went into the coffers of the local lord, and the monarchy. In exchange, the local lords and the monarch offered protection against invaders, some measure of law and order, and possibly roads. That's it. 2/18
The vast majority of funds and goods collected went into the treasuries of the wealthy and powerful. I think the conservatives are very confused about the fact that this is not how things work anymore. 3/18
Re: court decision today. The thing that gets me about this is Bill C-69 is to ensure projects are evaluated to protect public health, the environment, and neighbouring communities. Who could be against protecting these things? 1/8 #AbLeg#anpoli#UCPCorruption
So when the UCP says C-69 will make sure there are no more pipelines built, they are saying that O&G production/shipping is inherently too dangerous for health, environment & communities to pass the evaluation process, right? 2/8
But if you look at it objectively, surely people's health, the health of the planet, is slightly more important than making money for Shell or Husky, isn't it? O&G provides jobs, but fewer and fewer the more automation takes over. 3/8
