Impact of Russian disinformation:
How does it affect our societies and political leadership? #Ukraine 🧵
Politicians care about public opinion ----> they want to get elected or re-elected...if you are able to influence public opinion, you influence political decisions.
Russian disinfo (like the denial of war crimes) leads to a lack of empathy with Ukrainians ---> means less pressure on politicians to help Ukraine.
Disinfo-infected people pressure on politicians to support Ukraine less or even normalize relations with Russia.
Our democratic societies are based on freedom of speech, which makes them vulnerable to disinformation campaigns.
We are almost not prepared: There is not enough awareness about Russian disinformation, even if we know about it since decades...
Politicians (and their staff) are also influenced by Russian disinformation and propaganda.
Sometimes it serves their ideology or strategic interests, in other cases, lack of specific knowledge makes them less resilient against false information spread by the Kremlin.
Journalists: Unfortunately, Russian narratives are very often spread by Western media as "one possible version" of events. We need to speak about #FalseEquivalence
Hosts of Western talk-shows are often not able to debunk fake-information by their guests accurately.
Russian disinformation is not always blunt, obviously absurd or easy to debunk: Some narratives can be absorbed by educated and influential people: Those are the most dangerous and viral ones.

"Russia was afraid of Ukraine joining NATO cause of its security"---> truth: Kremlin was afraid to lose military access to Ukraine
Genocide against Russian speaking people --> truth: Russia is killing thousands of them in Mariupol and other cities
"Russian language is banned in Ukraine"-->Ukrainian language was suppressed by Russian & Soviet authorities for decades, on the other hand, Russian language is still used in all regions of Ukraine and for instance in Zelenskyy's TV series "Servant of the People" or other TV shows
"Separatists in Eastern Ukraine were defending themselves"---> the Russian proxy republics are created by Russian nationalists like Igor Girkin and Aleksander Borodai, orchestred and financed by Russia, mercenaries (Wagner) and Russian soldiers and radical groups "on vacation"
I would love that every journalist in the world would know, who Igor Girkin and Aleksander Borodai are, and what their role in the Russian aggression against Ukraine 2014 was 🧵
- Russian nationalists from Moscow
- Warlords
- Borodai is a Duma member for Putin's party "Yedinaya Rossiya"
You can find additional information, interviews and articles on their wikipedia pages
One could mention that Pushilin is local: Yes, he was already quite famous, because he was involved in a finance fraud (pyramid scheme) by a former Russian Duma member (Sergei Mavrodi, from Moscow)
50% russischsprachig, sogar Kyiv...
Russian disinfo-machine works like a foxy criminal attorney, defending a gangster who did terrible crimes:
It is all about perverting the truth until people are so confused that they don't know what to believe anymore.(thread)🧵
Many of us Westerners want to believe Russian lies, cause the harsh reality of war crimes, torture and rape is too much for our calm European mind. Russian disinfo gives us an excuse not to think about it anymore, to care less, to lose empathy and to continue our normal life.
We go full #falseequivalence and #falsebalance and speak about "both parties" instead of aggressor against defender, attacker & victim...Russian disinfo gives us also a reason not to help Ukrainians, not to deliver more weapons, to justify our decision to appease the aggressor.
Collection of sentences about Russia/Ukraine that are based on pro-Russian or at least false information🧵
"we need to restore dialogue with Russia".
It was never cut off!
"we did not talk enough to Putin." Even now, he constantly receives phone calls and high level visitors
"NATO is encircling Russia" "NATO-expansion is a threat to Russia".
NATO is a defensive alliance: history shows, that is actually Russia that is a threat for its neighbors that are not protected by NATO #Georgia#Moldova#Ukraine
"Putin changed, he was different in 2000."
Putin was a KGB agent during the 80s. In the early 90s he said that he admires dictator Pinochet, in the 2000s his military commited war crimes in Chechnya
- Ukraine is an independent country since 1991 - but history of Ukrainian statehood is much older
- Ukraine did not "provoke" Russia, it was attacked by Russia especially since 2014, Russia doesn't accept the existence of Ukraine
NATO: Before the beginning of Russian aggression 2014, far less than 50% of Ukrainians were in favor of NATO membership. After 2014 and the constant Russian aggression (annexation of Crime, war in Donbas), the numbers increased drastically.
EU: The desire to join the EU is not new, especially after Euromaidan: In 2019 53% supported joining the EU (DIF survey), 79% had a favorable view about the European Union (PEW research center).
