1: Ever wonder what the founders meant by "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed?"

It doesn't mean what you think.

2: There are 3 things you hear about the 2nd Amendment from gun nuts.
1. Its for self defense/personal liberty
2. Its so the people can overthrow a tyrannical government.
3. Its for hunting.

All three of these arguments are complete BS.
3: Self protection has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment. Its purpose was to safeguard the Republic through the establishment of militias akin to those that helped form the Continental Army. To achieve this, several regulations were imposed from the outset of the Republic.
4: Firearm registration - Every state (except for Pennsylvania who blocked the creation of a militia) enrolled citizens 16-60 in state-regulated militias and required the registration and proper care and maintenance of all firearms within that state.

5: Safe Storage Laws - From the founding, there were laws against improper storage of firearms, again, largely stemming from the treatment of the population as a citizen militia and imposing the regulations on the proper storage of weapons and ammunition upon that militia.
6: Open Carry Bans - While Open Carry was the norm at first, by the end of the 18th century the legal norm had shifted to bans on open carry becoming the norm due to increased availability of firearms which led to soaring murder rates, particularly in the South.
7: Private ownership bans and loyalty oaths - During the American Revolution itself, the Continental Congress and state governments imposed disarmament policies on the civilian population...
founders.archives.gov/documents/Adam…
8: ...and the right to bear arms was almost always conditional on the swearing of a loyalty oath to the Government. Individuals who refused were disarmed.
9: Its also worth noting that the idea that the Founders (sans Jefferson, and only when he wasn't in power) did not want the public to rise up against the government they just created, and the constitution defined such an act as treason.
10: So, if you want the 2nd Amendment to be applied based on the things the Founders actually did, then every citizen should be drafted into the Army or Naval Reserves at age 16 until age 60 and have the same firearm requirements as the US military even when not on active duty.
11: #CommonSenseGunLaws would actually be pretty lax by the standards of the Founders.

1: There are some compelling arguments comparing the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade to Dred Scott, but I'd argue that the repeal of Roe v. Wade has much more in common with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
politico.com/news/magazine/…
2: APUSH refresher: the Kansas-Nebraska Act established the concept of "popular sovereignty," allowing incoming states (Kansas and Nebraska) to vote on their status as Free or Slave states.
3: This law in practice repealed the Missouri Compromise which had banned slavery North of the 36th parallel. From a clinical analysis, this act created distrust in political institutions, but to people of the 1850s, the slavers had now taken over the country.

1: In 1977, during the Gas Crisis, Chrysler debuted a concept car called the LeBaron Turbine. A car powered by a jet engine.
2: It was complete impractical, nobody wanted it, and it was totally out of touch with reality. Not unlike every other gas guzzler the company was making in the 70s.
3: 2 years later Chrysler was facing bankruptcy. The company kept chasing higher performance and new use cases with ever diminishing returns, and was now being beaten out by more efficient imports that Americans actually wanted.

#WhatIf Lincoln didn't replace Hannibal Hamlin as his Vice President in 1864? Thus Hamlin becomes President in 1865 rather than Andrew Johnson. #alternatehistory (1)
1865 - Hannibal Hamlin is sworn in as the 17th President of the United States. Having narrowly kept his job as VP after Lincoln shelved plans for a unity ticket in 1864 in order to appease Radical Republicans, Hamlin takes a more aggressive approach to Reconstruction. (2)
Hamlin's first term sees Special Field Orders No. 15 (which granted 400k acres of land to 18,000 former enslaved families) is never rescinded, former Confederates are immediately barred from ever holding office again, and many Confederate leaders are imprisoned for treason. (3)

Thread: I've been trying to wargame out a more widespread insurrection in the US, because I'm getting properly sick of people trivializing a Civil War. (1/16)
Firstly, both of these maps only tell a very small part of the story of what a widespread insurrection would look like. This map is the most accurate breakdown of the political state of the country I can find: (2/16) carto.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappvie…
Yes, there are large swaths of empty land in the US, but Republicans and Democrats by in large live on top of one another. That means a hypothetical Red Hat Rebellion would involve a lot of violence around major population centers. (3/16)
