RECALLED: Chesa Boudin was too progressive even for liberal San Francisco. This is a cautionary tale for elected officials in Seattle, a city with similar sensibilities. Asian American voting bloc played massive role in recall. Boudin accused of botching response to #AsianHate.
PROGRESSIVE JUDGES WATCH OUT: It’s not just about progressive prosecutors. Covering King Co. courts, I have watched progressive judges release repeat offenders numerous times, and the cycle continues. Judges must also be held accountable. 👇🏽
DEMOCRATIC CIVIL WAR: In San Fran, folks who thought they were liberal Dems, started to question their political identity after Chesa Boudin failed to prosecute burglaries and hate crimes targeting Asian Americans. This helped fuel recall. #StopAsianHate nytimes.com/2022/06/05/us/…
TV and SOCIAL MEDIA’S ROLE IN RECALL: For more than a year, San Franciscans watched Asian Americans and their elders being savagely beaten up in viral videos. And the barrage of attacks, thefts, and other crimes are still happening in the Bay Area, all on Boudin’s watch.
GOING GLOBAL: San Francisco’s crime wave and brazen thefts even got the attention of the watching world. Boudin was portrayed by critics as soft on crime. #Walgreens
BLOW TO PROGRESSIVES AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM?
Removal comes amid movement to elect progressive prosecutors dedicated to tackling police brutality and mass incarceration.
“The sidewalks were filthy, filled with homeless tents and a god-awful smell. Distracted, I almost tripped over a squatting man sticking a hypodermic needle between his toes.”
LIMITS OF LIBERALISM: Progressives emboldened by Black Lives Matter movement and attempts at criminal justice reform, reaching too quickly for the levers of power. Underestimating the vast majority of citizens even in liberal Democratic enclaves.
REAL TALK: “The pandemic and subsequent rise in anti-Asian violence politicized Asian Americans. And for some struggling with fear, anxiety and frustration…the Boudin recall, and the school board recall that preceded it, is a version of empowerment.”
UNDERREPORTED ANGLE TO BOUDIN RECALL: San Francisco is home to nearly 300K Asians and Pacific Islanders. Equivalent to about a 1/3 of city's population, they make up the second largest race group behind whites. And many of them had enough of Boudin.
INCONVENIENT TRUTH: You can spin it any way you want or call it a “trope,”but most videos emerging out of New York/San Francisco show black and brown perpetrators attacking Asian Americans. Some saw Boudin as siding with the criminals instead of victims.
STILL WAITING: People living at one of the most problematic homeless encampments in Seattle say they are being unfairly blamed for criminal activity. At the very least, they are now asking @MayorofSeattle@KC_RHA@wsdot to clear trash and junked cars.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Robert Chase was gracious enough to invite me in for a tour. I understand the safety concerns. But I have been building relationships with the homeless at various encampments in Seattle now for the past couple years and have their trust, especially here.
ABANDONED CAMPS: This area is so vast, there are remnants of multiple homeless encampments all over the place. We could not enter this fenced area. #Seattle
#BREAKING: Leary Triangle homeless encampment sweep underway. Activists on site but so far no confrontations. This camp has been a thorn in the side of businesses in area, especially for @fremontbrewing, owned by @CMSaraNelson’s family. Crews more than halfway done. #Seattle
SAME CREW: Activists and mutual aid on site. This sweep was actually delayed a week, giving city outreach workers more time to help campers transition. #Seattle
WRAPPING UP: Final sweep today at Ballard’s.Leary Triangle. Biz owners telling me they want @MayorofSeattle to know how much they appreciate follow through on promise to sweep problematic encampments that are public safety hazards. Also thanking @SeattleParks@SeattleSPU#Seattle
More disturbing graffiti found this evening at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Calls for violence against @SeattlePD@MrAndyNgo@MayorJenny@realmikesolan.
Signs indicate far left/Antifa sympathizers could be responsible.
OTHER INSULTS AND THREATS: @MayorofSeattle also mentioned again in this latest round of vandalism at Cal Anderson Park. #Seattle
PARKS TARGETED AGAIN: @SeattleParks just cleaned graffiti at Cal Anderson. Also over the weekend, vandals trashed parks HQ on Dexter Ave N., leaving intimidating messages including one that read, “You sweep, we strike,” in reference to recent homeless encampment clearings.
PRACTICING WHAT THEY PREACH:
Parts of 3rd Ave. in downtown Seattle remain problematic. But volunteers with @reachministrywa have been setting up food and prayer stations Wednesday nights to help those in need, including the drug addicts. #Seattle
IMPACT: Been covering 3rd Ave. and the explosion of illegal activity for months. Including the @SeattlePD sweeps and the on going presence of officers. All that has helped. But I have never witnessed a faith group come in and bring order and calm through this type of outreach.
SOME PUSH BACK: Even though @reachministrywa has been setting up exclusively near empty store fronts on 3rd Ave., some biz owners have complained, accusing the ministry of enabling the addicts with free hand outs, and attracting more problems like a crush of foot traffic.#Seattle
@SeattlePD sent me a statement confirming @SeattleParks HQ on 100 Dexter Way N. was indeed trashed Saturday night. But right now, investigators say they’re still looking into the motive and person or persons responsible. #Seattle
@SeattleParks spokesperson also says it’s HQ was vandalized.
But my parks sources are asking why there’s no mention of the msg left behind saying, “You sweep, we attack. You sweep we strike.”
Sources believe radical homeless activists are behind this brazen vandalism.#Seattle
#SCOOP: Just learned a window was also busted out at @SeattleParks West Central Dist. HQ a few days ago. Unclear if related to vandalism at Dexter Ave N. location. But multiple sources say they’re concerned radical homeless activists against sweeps are trying to intimidate them.
