No surprises from Liz Truss this evening but a few thoughts on what is probably the lowest day in this entire sorry #Brexit process. 1/
This legislation is quite simply baffling in its disregard for international law, the people and businesses of Northern Ireland and the EU. 2/
The contents of these proposals beg the question of have the UK Govt been listening to any of the concerns raised by the EU or Northern Ireland over the past six years? 3/
That the UK Govt believes that it is acceptable to remove the role of the CJEU in governing the Protocol, that they can go as far as to, ‘choose’ between adhering to EU or UK rules is absolutely staggering. 4/
Adding insult to injury, the UK Govt have claimed to respect the EU’s intention to protect the Single Market. This is pure and simple gaslighting, if the UK cared about protecting the Single Market, they would be taking a very different course of action today. 5/
If passed and enacted, this clear breach of the Withdrawal Agreement and of international law will lead to a wide range of consequences; none of which will be positive for the UK or EU. 6/
The UK Govt seem blind to this, they claim that the Protocol is causing a ‘chilling effect on trade’ – when compared to the collapse of the Withdrawal Agreement the status quo is vastly superior. 7/
Both the UK Govt and the European Commission recognise there are problems with the implementation of the Protocol. Solutions have been proposed by the EU, but the UK Govt have consistently refused to engage with them. 8/
Just because the UK Govt claim something to be true does not make it so. Claiming that there is a democratic deficit with the Protocol when Maroš Šefčovič spent months engaging with businesses and the people of Northern Ireland is insulting. 9/
Quite frankly, this move is pure fantasy more suited to Willy Wonka than a serious politician. 10/
We are harkening back to the time of ‘alternative arrangements’ and technological solutions with proposals for ‘green’ and ‘red’ lanes with different levels of checks, which is clearly not feasible or easily monitored. 11/
What we are now seeing is the UK Govt blatantly ignoring the will of the people of Northern Ireland, ignoring their responsibilities and risking their reputation on the international stage all for the sake of internal party politics. 12/
After six years of Brexit shenanigans, this is the most disappointing move yet. 13/13

I am calling for the establishment of an all-party Special Oireachtas Committee to be established to look at the challenges and opportunities that Irish Unity presents. 1/
Brexit has fundamentally changed the tone of debate when it comes to Irish unity. 2/
It is conceivable that a British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland could call a border poll on Irish unity within the next decade. 3/
In June @MaryLouMcDonald wrote in the @IrishSunOnline that “There can be no whitewashing of detrimental impact the Kinahans have on society”. I now ask, does she stand by this or by her colleague @johnfinucane who’s law firm issued letters on behalf of #kinahan?
Deputy McDonald said “Attempts by Daniel Kinahan to portray himself as some sort of legitimate businessman will not wash with the communities he and his cohorts have sought to decimate and profit from.” Does she agree with the her own MP’s law firm that these are ‘outrageous’?
So this weekend, like many, we’re going to see the usual #brexit suspects come out with some of their regular outbursts. Here’s a few thoughts I have via a #Thread below.
Some of these will point blame at the EU for trying to sabotage a deal, focus specifically on Ireland or go for the approach that the EU will crack soon due to the pressures of the German car manufacturers or the likes.
We could be told, again, that Ireland will follow the U.K. out of the EU or indeed seek to rejoin the UK itself!
