Look, Carrie Johnson was eminently suited to a £100k FO job. Here she is in 2012 with the Russian Ambassador at the launch of Conservative Friends of Russia, set up by the later CEO of Vote Leave with the help of Russian agent Sergey Nalobin.

...at least, I'm pretty sure this is Carrie Johnson (then Symonds). Also pictured here is John Whittingdale MP, a founder member of Conservative Friends of Russia, whom she accompanied to this delightful event, where raffle prizes included a biography of Putin.
#Carriegate
Carrie Johnson & the Tory MPs at the launch of Conservative Friends of Russia must have known the nature of Putin's regime. Putin had already presided over massacres in Chechnya, invaded Georgia & ordered the murder of Alexander Litvinenko in London with radioactive polonium.
.@RaveCozensHardy has alerted me to another photo that suggests I may have misidentified the woman next to Whittingdale in the photo. But Carrie Johnson was most certainly there, accompanying Whittingdale (later a leading figure in Vote Leave).
What has become of Russian agent Sergey Nalobin since he set up Conservative Friends of Russia with Matthew Elliott (later CEO of Vote Leave)?

In April he was expelled from Estonia on grounds of national security.
newlinesmag.com/reportage/esto…
To be clear, the presence of Carrie Johnson at this event doesn't show she was actively involved with Russian intelligence. She was merely an eager young Tory surfing the tide of sleaze, mixing with others who were much more active participants. And look where that's taken her.
And here is Russian agent Sergey Nalobin in happier times, sharing a photo of himself with "our good friend" Boris Johnson. Small world.
The strange disappearance of the "job for Carrie" story echoes another press cover-up involving John Whittingdale, her companion at the Conservative Friends of Russia launch.

Friendly media barons can be very helpful.

Number 10 Intervened Before Carrie Johnson Job Story Pulled From The Times.

Former Number 10 adviser Dominic Cummings claims the story is accurate & "the truth is worse".

So what pressure was applied?

Or, as so often with the Tory Party, was the suppression of the Carrie Johnson story more a matter of calling in favours granted?

A 'gentle reminder' of the very large sums of taxpayers' money handed to billionaire newspaper proprietors?
#Carriegate
As I wrote recently for @WCountryVoices, the standard model of Tory misgovernment works like this.

In the case of media barons, the donations come more in the form of favourable coverage (or suppression of the truth).

Which takes us back to the beginning of this thread. Siphoning donations of Russian money into the Tory Party was what Russian agent Sergey Nalobin had in mind when he helped set up Conservative Friends of Russia.

He understood the Tory mindset very well.

Both Hitler & Mussolini hated lawyers and often abused them. They saw the rule of law as a barrier to their exercise of absolute power, in the name of "the will of the people".
#ToryFascists
... e.g. Hitler: : "I shall not rest until every German sees that it is a shameful thing to be a lawyer."
#ToryFascists
Mussolini made himself dictator to put himself beyond the law when his crimes came under investigation. Fascists will make laws to give a legal veneer to oppression, but an independent judiciary is completely antithetical to fascism.

Key point that's being missed about Rishi Sunak's Energy Profits Levy (#WindfallTax) on oil & gas profits: companies will be able offset investment in new fossil fuel extraction against their taxable profit. That's exactly what they'll do.

This tax is highly damaging to climate.
That's why Rishi Sunak didn't simply raise the existing Supplementary Charge on N. Sea oil & gas. That also allows investment offsets but not as big & only after profits from investment are booked.

The fossil fuel interests that fund the Tory Party will be delighted.
... in fact, it's unlikely the #windfalltax will raise anything like as much as is being claimed. Nor will encourage investment in renewables.

With oil & gas profits soaring, fossil fuel corps will minimise their tax liability by ploughing profits back into new oil & gas...

If you were thinking of a stay at the Camelot Castle Hotel in Tintagel, you may like to know that its proprietor, John Mappin, is a big fan of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

There are other reasons you might want to give it a miss, as I described here:
westcountryvoices.co.uk/qanon-in-cornw… Image
John Mappin may seem like a deranged fantasist, but he has some interesting connections.

He is, for example, chair & director of this exceeding fishy outfit, fronted up by his fellow Putin fan Nigel Farage, which I wrote about for @WCountryVoices.
westcountryvoices.co.uk/nigel-farage-a…
John Mappin also hosted the UK launch of Turning Point, a far-right youth organisation that has been endorsed by both Jacob Rees-Mogg and Priti Patel.

The right to protest is crucial to democracy.
Priti Patel’s #PoliceBill aims to remove this right.

It would allow the government to stop any protest & create a police state.

Find out how you can help @TheGreenParty's #ProtestIsNotACrime campaign here:

The #PoliceBill is now even more dangerous after "amendments" were added without proper scrutiny or debate.

These would make it even easier for peaceful protesters to be prosecuted & jailed for up to 51 weeks.

Will @UKLabour vote against them in the Lords?

#ProtestIsNotACrime
"Locking on" was a key part of the Suffragettes long campaign for votes for women.

Priti Patel's #PoliceBill aims to make this a crime punishable by up to 51 weeks in prison.

And this was *before* Daniel Kawczynski got his hands on £22,000 of public money for "Polish language lessons".
Learn Polish the Daniel Kawczynski way. Lesson 1:

"Opłaty za szkołę są bardzo drogie. Zrobię wszystko dla pieniędzy."

(School fees are very expensive. I will do anything for money.)

It's going to be PM Rishi Sunak, isn't it? Looks like probably sooner rather than later.

Sunak is smart & personable, but his "free-market", "fiscally conservative" ideology is absolutely lethal - & especially disastrous in the context of Covid & the #ClimateEmergency.
I suspect Boris Johnson does not actually want to remain PM for much longer. He's essentially lazy & would rather be raking in easy money from speeches & articles. A determined push from Sunak & his backers would probably oust him quite easily.

Sunak has a lean & hungry look.
Rishi Sunak also has a big advantage within the Tory Party thanks to his intimate connections with hedge-funds - the biggest source of donations to the party.

They will no doubt be especially keen on his "relaxed" attitude to tax avoidance.
