Career disruption statements

7 ways to help reviewers understand career disruptions to review fairly
🧡

@AcademicMomLife @Momademia
@AcademicChatter
Note, I believe most reviewers want to assess grants fairly.

This 🧡is about writing clearly to help reviewers do this.

Its not magic bullet.
But telling our stories clearly is a small step to a system that acknowledges everyone's opportunity.
1. Be specific with time

I include the month and year so reviewers cannot miscalculate the length of my disruption

❌️"I was on leave from 2020 - 2021" (reviewer might assume 1 year off)

βœ…οΈ"I was on leave from Feb 2020 to Dec 2021" (reviewer knows its almost 2 years)

Academia is notorious for being late

How to stick to a writing deadline
A thread🧡

@AcademicChatter @PhD_Genie @OpenAcademics
1. Make it hyper-specific

It's hard to meet a deadline if you don't know what or when it is. Define the exact time and deliverable

❌️ I'll finish the manuscript before next term

βœ…οΈ I'll complete a first draft of the manuscript introduction by Friday morning
2. Make it attractive

Its human nature to prioritise things that bring satisfaction. Make deadlines result in pleasurable outcomes

❌️ I need to write the meeting minutes today

βœ…οΈ I'll write the meeting minutes by midday then take a 15min walk after as a reward

Every journal has a textbox asking peer reviewers for "Confidential comments to the editor"

What should you write here?

A thread 🧡

@AcademicChatter
Issues with scope/format

Editors check papers fit the journal requirements before sending out to peer review.

If you think the paper is outside scope or a type not published by the journal, notify the editor so they can closely rereview
Ethical issues

Similarly, editors check author disclosures, COIs and study ethics prior to peer review.

If you think a COI affects study integrity or a study is not ethical, notify the editor so they can investigate.
