Thread: Danger of free-pass to Muslim fundamentalists, by journalists.
On the day Rahul Bhat was shot dead in Kashmir (in series of Hindu killings), #WashingtonPost instead published a column- "Muslims fear the worst".
Infuriating deflection but pattern did not surprise.
After Art 370 abrog in 2019, despite no mass violence nor civilian killings, NYT published, "Inside Kashmir, a living hell" + Melodrama column by Arundhati Roy.
Deliberate discourse served to global audience by ignoring ground reality of Jihadism & Pak-funded radicalisation.
Recently, some "ground reports" on Kashmiri Pandits exposed govt failure & bureaucracy incompetence. Fair pt.
But smartly edited-out real details: Who is killing & to send wht msg? Who does a fleeing minority fear around them?
Understand between their quotes, don't just pen it.
For data: 13 Hindu, Sikh Civilians identified & killed between 2020-22 by extremists in #Kashmir.
All were innocent, harmless.
Colleagues shuld've stood up. Taken note of Valley's widespread indoctrination & minority persecution. But global news explosion was, not to be.
Communal discord is caused not just by hate speech. But by journos empathising with radicals & denying platform to genuine grievances of their victims, miniscule minority.
Keeping hope alive are Muslims, who bravely confront Islamists, taking huge personal risk. As journalists, we shd amplify & support THEM.
Remember, Saifullah Qadri & Amreena Bhat were shot dead, in front of their children. Their life exemplified courage against religious dogma.
In Maharashtra, 19-year-old Saad Ansari questioned conservatives within community and condemned death threats to Nupur. Mob assaulted him at home, almost lynched. Yet, Saad is in prison since 2 Weeks.
Who will you support, the brave boy or mobsters?
Who gave confidence to these monsters in Udaipur?
Who were they becoming Hero for?
Why did they not fear consequences?
Why did they think, murder will follow support?
From, Terrorist's tragic back story, narrative shifted to, Reaction on identity attack.
ML Bindroo & Rahul Bhat killings reported as "reaction to Abrogation of Art 370".
Kanhaiya Lal killed in Udaipur being passed-off as "reaction to Nupur Sharma derogatory comments".
In giving killers and radicals a soft journalistic nudge, you embolden them.
By ignoring global rise of Islamist extremism and downplay survivor's horror, some colleagues ensure the first draft of history will blame everything, but not Jihadist crimes.

How dare you, @DilliDurAst , misquote my report to suit your hate-filled, petty agendas. Rather than listen to teary-eyed Pandits in same report- with eagerness to return, you are shameful to play around with nomenclature of camp/Township?
Bcz, you wr forced to live in neither?
Yes, tent camps have given way to dilapidated apartments. And that makes anti-minority rhetoric alright?
Instead of empathising that KPs are still not rehabilitated by govts in Kashmir, we have scaremongering - that they will take over Kashmir!
And not even initiate a beginning?
Who are you to decide, Shivam Vij, if kashmiri pandits intend to return or not? It is their choice to make.
Importantly, why are you so keen NOT TO have KPs return, despite many saying they have hope. Odd for columnist to make contrary assumption Despite on-record testimonies.
"At his funeral we realised the impact Papaji (father) had created on people's lives. Dozens of locals were in tears when they recounted tales of financial help or opportunities they received from him - all in secrecy. Even we were taken aback," said his son. #Udhampur
#SardarAvtarSingh had "trekked from Pakistan and reached Udhampur all alone. However, when he left the mortal world, he had earned the goodwill of an entire town. He will be remembered for his generosity and the delicious bread he baked". #Jammu#Udhampur
