This is clearly a political risk for Poilievre. He has stepped out of the shadows and is openly endorsing the convoy. Does he realize there is no walking back? Does he realize he can't pick the "peaceful protest" bits to endorse and be identified with? #cndpoli#FreeDumbConvoy
Because these people he's walking with are part of the same organization that put out this leaflet clearly outlining their plans to seize control of the government.
And it's also part of the same group that chants things like "guns or rope", or "USA", and waves swastikas and confederate flags. Also F*ck Trudeau flags. As an aside, my gran would have been in there boxing ears and washing mouths out with soap for those flags.
So, what does Poilievre think he's going to get out of this? A lot of Canadians can't stand him. They find his barky bullying ways (most demonstrated during committee interrogations) extremely distasteful.
So, he commits what many might consider political suicide by going all in with the convoy.
Just to remind anyone who doesn't know about James Topp (other info available on my earlier tweet threads today) this is what he professes.
So, yeah. Pierre Poilievre has done some political calculus here. He has cast off any pretense of not being 100% in with these guys. Let's not forget, he hasn't really said he's running for leadership of the CPC. He has said he is running to be PM.
And do not, for even a moment, imagine that he doesn't know what they are all about. He knows what they say on social media and in podcasts and radio shows. He knows there will likely be an attempted insurrection.
And he has weighed all the information and decided to throw away all the votes of people who are disgusted by his support of the convoys. He is putting his money on these guys.
And I have to wonder... Is his plan to have these people, who he seems to see as effective shock troops, (there is a reason he has chosen the Vets4Freedom to hang out with) overthrow the government and make him PM? Is he expecting to be PM by July 2nd?
I honestly cannot recall any other time in Canadian history where an ambitious political leader has aligned himself so clearly with an organization that wants to violently redefine Canada.
During the October Crisis, Rene Levesque had poo-poohed the idea that the FLQ were terrorists, said they were misunderstood. But once things got real, M. Levesque, in a newspaper article, implored the FLQ to not hurt their hostages or others. He had a solid moral compass.
OK, don't @ me with any of this "Oh, but the convoy cleaned the streets and fed the homeless" BS. There is one reason the convoy is out there, doing what they're doing. And it may come wrapped in BBQs and bouncy castles, and they may bring their kids and say it's all peaceful...
But the only unifying thread that runs through all of this is a blind hatred for the Liberals, and especially the PM, and a desire to topple our democratically elected government. It's like the mean kid at school who smiles and pretends to be nice, but really isn't.
They are camouflaged by the "peaceful protest" disguise. Fomenting outrage against anyone who suggests there is anything amiss here. And, I daresay a lot of Canadians haven't been watching all that closely. Because we don't usually, do we? We've got things to do...
But this organization is that bully kid who is all sweet when adults are around, butter wouldn't melt in their mouth. But, when they are unsupervised, everything goes all Lord of the Flies.
So, I guess Poilievre is really hoping his buds will have a successful coup tomorrow. Otherwise, his political career may be heading to the toilet.

I was a late life child for my parents. My Dad was 50 and my Mom was 40 when I was born. There's a 16 year gap between me and my next sibling. My Gran, my Dad's Mum, was a Victorian woman. Literally. She was born when Victoria was Queen of all the world that was pink. Centre back
She was 9 years old when Queen Victoria died, and my Grandpa was 11. They remembered Queen Victoria. They lived in Scotland, so the Queen was not merely some conceptual being across the ocean.
My Gran was a very interesting woman.
On the one hand, she had a very deeply ingrained sense of propriety. Phrases like "children should be seen and not heard" slipped freely from her lips. Also, "Little pitchers have big ears", meaning this should not be discussed in front of the children.
So, the AB Auditor General can't figure out where all the COVID money ($4B, that's Billion, with a B) went to, what it was spent on & whether goals were attained. And in 2020, there was $1.6 B the AG said was lost in accounting errors or something. What I would like to know is...
What changed? This was not the norm before the UCP formed government. Presumably every department has accountants, and protocols for tracking expenses and revenue, right? And it was working. So, what happened?
Was there a massive turnover in civil servants? Did all the good accountants go somewhere else at the end of 2019? Did the UCP drastically change all the protocols for tracking money through departments? Why would they change systems that were working to systems that don't work?
The Alberta Auditor General has released the report on the 2021 fiscal year. The report outlines $4B in COVID funding and spending but the UCP can't show where it went or what, if any, objectives were met. #Ableg#abpoli
This is why the federal government needs to attach strings to any funding to Alberta. The UCP cannot be relied upon to use funding as intended. They cannot seem to manage money at all. $4B is an awful lot to have just sort of "vanish". Some examples...
"The province received $1.3 billion in federal funding...We could not trace funds through to the recipient ministry results analysis section to see who spent the money and what was achieved." So, money came from the Feds, and then "poof!", disappears in a cloud of paperwork.
Every time I go to the dentist they have a tv playing in the ceiling & it is always set to the Food Network or something. And every time there's this same show in which a large guy eats an insane serving of food is a ltd period of time. Man vs Food. And every time I wonder, Why?
Apparently, there have been 9 seasons of this show. In which a (probably unhealthily) large guy consumes multiple extreme portions of food with a timer running. Again, Why?
Agent: I have an audition for you!
Out of Work Actor: Oh? Yeah! Let's do it!
Agent: It involves timed eating of huge plates of food. It could kill you..."
We are seeing a thing happening in Canadian political discourse that is completely contrary to democracy. We are seeing people, almost exclusively on the far-right, trying to silence any other voices. You can't have democracy without a variety of voices.
Democracy means everyone has a voice, even if it's only at the ballot box. But we have the freedom to write letters, emails, and call our representatives to tell them how we feel about an issue. We have the freedom to speak publicly about how we feel about issues.
But there are those, on social media and in real life, who strive to silence any voices that disagree with them. They do it by trolling, hounding people with whataboutisms, insults, spurious attacks, and threats.
