The world is moving backwards in efforts to eliminate hunger & malnutrition with 828 million people affected by hunger globally in 2021: UN State of Food Security and Nutrition report bit.ly/3IhHXjw

An estimated 45 million children under five years old were suffering from wasting*, the deadliest form of malnutrition, which increases children’s risk of death by up to 12 times bit.ly/3IhHXjw

*wasting: when children are too thin for their height
149 million children under five years old had stunted* growth & development due to a chronic lack of nutritious food in their diets, while 39 million were overweight.

*stunting: when a child is too short for their age, due to a failure to grow both physically & cognitively
🤱🏻Progress is being made on exclusive #breastfeeding where infants under six months old being exclusively breastfed worldwide:
2020: Nearly 44%
2012: 37.1%
2030 target: 50%

More: bit.ly/3IhHXjw
The ongoing war in #Ukraine, involving two of the biggest global producers of staple cereals, oilseeds & fertilizer, is disrupting intl supply chains, pushing up the prices of grain, fertilizer, energy & ready-to-use therapeutic food for children with severe malnutrition.
11M ppl die due to unhealthy diets every year. We have to improve food systems through:
-taxing unhealthy foods
-subsidising healthy options
-protecting children from harmful marketing
-ensuring clear nutrition labels
-product reformulation
-public food procurement
-food safety
Rice🍚, sugar🍬 & meats🥩 of various types are most incentivized food items worldwide, while fruits🍎 & vegetables🥦 are relatively less supported, particularly in some low-income countries bit.ly/3IhHXjw
Evidence suggests that if governments repurpose the resources they are using to incentivize the production, supply & consumption of nutritious foods, they will contribute to making healthy diets less costly, more affordable and equitably for all bit.ly/3IhHXjw

1 year ago, as the 🌐’s richest countries rolled out #COVID19 vaccines while the poorest countries watched on, WHO set an ambitious but attainable 🎯 to vaccinate 7⃣0⃣% of the population of every country by the mid-2022.

The deadline is upon us, have we achieved #VaccinEquity?
#COVID19 vaccination has saved almost 2⃣0⃣ million
lives in 2021 alone, according to a new study in @TheLancetInfDis

Hundreds of thousands of deaths could have been averted if the 🌎🌍🌏 had reached WHO's target to vaccinate 40% of the population of every country against #COVID19 by the end of 2021. Most of these lives could have been saved in low income countries:

Deaths on the streets are UNACCEPTABLE as they are PREVENTABLE.

Around 1.3 million people die on the roads each year. #RoadSafety saves lives. 👉bit.ly/3Ny2mSk
To reduce 5⃣0⃣% of road traffic deaths & injuries by 2030, many countries have already made progress through better legislation around key areas like:

🚗 speeding
🚙 drinking and driving
🚗 seat-belts
🛵 helmets

LIVE: media briefing on #COVID19 and other global health issues with @DrTedros twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
@DrTedros "#COVID19, driven by BA.4 and BA.5 in many places, cases are on the rise in 110 countries, causing overall global cases to increase by 20% and deaths have risen in 3 of the 6 WHO regions even as the global figure remains relatively stable"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "This pandemic is changing but it’s not over. Our ability to track the #COVID19 virus is under threat as reporting and genomic sequences are declining meaning it is becoming harder to track Omicron and analyse future emerging variants"-@DrTedros
