I'd like to thank Rafael Nicolas Fermin Cota for pointing me to this modified graphic from a recent Harvard Business Review article on "Prioritizing Which Data Skills Your Company Needs".
You hear Harvard Business Review, & you think this must be legit.

Well, in this case, they dropped the ball.

If you're coming up with an educational plan for your org in 2022, here are some tips...
1. Focus on #STATS

This the precursor to everything & will help you tremendously
2. Learn how to work with #Data

#DataCleaning and manipulation is 90% of what you will do
3. Build skills in #DataVisualization

This is a cornerstone of understanding, yet many ML specialists can't do it
4. Skip over buzzwords until after you learn fundamentals

AI, Data Science, ML - You'll get to these after you learn stats, data manipulation / data cleaning, & data viz

Just 3 days ago, I had the pleasure of watching the #rstudioconf2022 kick off.

I've been attending since 2018 and watching even longer than that.

And, I was just a normal spectator in the audience until this happened.
@topepos and @juliasilge's keynote showed all of the open source work their team has been working on to build the best machine learning ecosystem in R called #tidymodels.

And then they brought this slide up.

I’ve seen this firsthand when I was learning data science.
As a fresher, I spent way too much time coding complex models.

Fun fact - I once WASTED 6 months of my life building a deep learning model for my company that I never used.

9 tips to improve your #R programming (hacker-style). #rstats Image
1. Learn the fs package

fs gives you access to a suite of tools for working with the file system.

Here I'm getting the file paths for every CSV file in a directory.

2. Learn the map() function from the purrr package

map() is used to apply functions to each element of a list.

It's super powerful when combined with the pipe %>%

Here I'm just piping %>% in my file paths from Tip 1 into map() + read_csv()

And it reads all of my CSV files. Image

This small example demonstrates how you can learn R and automatically use SQL.
3/6 Under the hood, the dbplyr library converts R’s tidyverse syntax to SQL

So we don’t need to memorize the SQL translation.
