We are now at the sickening part of the DeShaun Watson story where the serial sexual abuser gets a woefully short suspension, after signing a contract that makes him the highest paid QB in NFL history. And he is supported by his team and their fans.
A thread. /1
Here are 10 Tweets on this mess. Because it says a lot about our culture and society, none of it good.
I wrote about the history of this up through the point that Watson was traded to the Browns and signed his monster contract here for @GoodMenProject:
Now former Federal Judge Sue Robinson (who I spent part of my D Del clerkship with!) has handed down a written decision and issued a 6 game suspension for Watson. (The @NFL was seeking a year suspension. It is not yet known if the League will appeal.
The suspension - objectively speaking - is woefully short. Especially considering Judge Robinsons findings that Watsons acts met the civil standard for sexual assault & showed such an egregious pattern of misconduct that she effectively banned him from getting private massages

Despite this and despite the Judge’s finding that Watson showed no remorse, the Browns press release says they’re sure he is remorseful! And fans are saying they “have Watson’s back.”
Like he’s the victim and this is some fun comeback story. This ain’t Rocky.
Watson has *never* expressed remorse - in fact Judge Robinson found he was not remorseful.
And those individuals weren’t “triggered.” They were sexually harassed/assaulted.

One huge problem - and we can say the same about social justice and our criminal justice system - in terms of the punishment: Judge Robinson is applying the precedent from the NFLs own history. She says this is longest suspension ever for non violent conduct. And that is true.
/8
Is the NFLs own history of suspensions - which have themselves been woefully short for off the field conduct - really be the measuring stick in 2022 if we are trying to get this right?
/9
The other issue that jumps out is our media - STILL treating this as a “woman’s issue”. Can we please stop with this nonsense?

1. The three main characters were each wonderful. Michelle Yeo (Crazy Rich Asians, Crouching Tiger) was pitch perfect in every universe she occupied. Stephanie Hsu (Marvelous Miss Maisel) was cool as hell. And Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones, Goonies) was sweet and lovable.
I like Farhad Manjoo; he's a thoughtful guy. And no doubt, we are in a period of great risk (and potentially great innovation and promise) for the nascent NFT space.
As someone who began as a skeptic but who is now fascinated with the potential, I'll just share a few thoughts:
1. Although NFTs and Crypto are based on the same underlying decentralized ledger technology (blockchain) and are linked in that Crypto can be and in many instances is used to buy NFTs, they are very different, IMO.
A fee completely unsolicited Sunday Evening thoughts on #NFTs:
NFTs encompass a ridiculously broad and varied range of “digital stuff”
This ranges from art and collectibles to in video game assets to mechanisms of tracking title and ownership of real world assets.

Art/collectibles are a large asset class & high profile (crazy high valuation) sales of art like Beeple’s & cultural/historical markers like Jack Dorsey’s first Tweet got attention. But the value of art in all forms is … hard to comprehend.
To me, the biggest reason that folks are excited about NFTs is because they provide a viable mechanism to monetize digital assets (which have always been very hard to monetize) AND there is A LOT of digital stuff out there and it’s only growing by the day.

This past Summer, when I wasn't feeling well and was also wondering if I was cut out to be a lawyer, I did some #values work with a terrific coach John Harvey to help in assessing potential career/life options. Ever grateful to John and to @motherhoodmag for introducing us.

I just looked back at the last email I sent when we left off our #values work.
I'd come up with the following 5 core values (and definitions of what those mean) for me:
1. Family = Being a good father, son, brother, partner, uncle. Always being there for family.
/2
2. Relationships = Connecting to others and connecting others to build things
3. Creativity = Feeding the part of me that likes to create and build, write and speak
