In honor of the 13th anniversary of the #Bitcoin Genesis Block…
A quick thread on misconceptions about its launch 🧵
1/ THE BLOCK REWARD FOR THE GENESIS BLOCK IS UNSPENDABLE
Every time a #Bitcoin block is found, new bitcoins are issued to the winning miner. This was not the case with the Genesis Block. Satoshi made this reward (50 BTC) unspendable.
2/ THE GENESIS BLOCK DIDN’T HAVE A REWARD
Most block explorers say the Genesis block created 50 BTC, but these aren’t included in the blockchain.
It’s more accurate to say the Genesis Block created all the 21 million #bitcoin now being released in blocks.
Called "The Father of Bitcoin Toxicity" by some, Mircea will endure as one of #Bitcoin's most vilified figures and inarguably one of its greatest philosophers.
In memory, a collection of my favorite MP quotes below.
"Bitcoin is fate. It operates completely outside of any human agency. For all you know about who Nakamoto was... Bitcoin might as well have created itself.
The way fate works is quite simple : do the right thing and you're part of it. Do the wrong thing and you're in the dark."
"Bitcoin is not here for you to opine about it. Bitcoin is here to profoundly and oft times painfully change your life. Whether you agree or not, whether you give permission or not, whether you think it "acceptable" or "called for" or whatever else. Nobody asked you."
IF YOUR STANDARD IS CRYPTOGRAPHIC PROOF, TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF SATOSHI'S DISAPPEARANCE FROM #BITCOIN
A THREAD 🧵
2/ The last message we know for a FACT is from Satoshi Nakamoto is dated 4/26/2011.
In that email, Satoshi sent @gavinandresen a cryptographic key only he could have possessed that controlled an alert system for the entire network.
3/ Not only is this the last known message from Satoshi, it’s one of the only messages we know – with a high degree of certainty – was sent by Satoshi.
No other correspondence we know from any forum post involved any cryptography that would indicate Satoshi was the sender.
2/ Last year, I published a definitive take on the first #Bitcoin war with @AaronvanW. But I still had questions...
What happened before Satoshi left? How did @gavinandresen emerge as project leader?
I dove into thousands of chat logs and emails to find out.
3/ Included are deeply cited overviews that allow you to explore #Bitcoin’s most infamous moments, including:
- @gavinandresen’s visit to the CIA
- the @Wikileaks controversy
- the hack that broke Bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap
- Satoshi’s last messages and disappearance
