🧵1/5 After Biden announced @johnpodesta would join his climate team, Podesta was in the headlines again. I downloaded about 20,000 tweets mentioning 'John Podesta' from the last 2 days, and curiously enough it's dominated by right-wing, alt-right accounts & #disinfo accounts
2/5 While the usual suspects (Jack Posobiec, Kyle Becker) are not saying anything particularly outlandish (that I noticed), I was struck by the fact the second most tweeted account was a Pizza Gate conspiracy trope by a verified US candidate @RealOmarNavarro . See photos >
3/5 As the graph below shows, @RealOmarNavarro 's tweets were clearly influential within the mentions of Podesta. When I asked people to see what tweets they saw when they searched Twitter for 'John Podesta' many said the top tweet was the one clearly alluding to John Podesta
4/5 being a paedophile. It's alarming that Twitter's algorithm is raising the prominence of this tweet, which itself has generated a lot of responses from sketchy anonymous accounts bringing back the Pizza Gate conspiracy.
5/5 And for those who don't know what Pizza Gate is, this is a good read For those who don't remember how dangerous and toxic it was. rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
Also the 'damning' images being shared by @RealOmarNavarro are paintings by Serbian artist biljana djurdjevic

"When you group the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt together–as the company does in its information dumps—the two Gulf states rank second only to China in manipulating Twitter" #disinformation
"Not even the former U.S. President Donald Trump was immune (or at least his Twitter timeline wasn’t). In 2017, when Trump tweeted support for Saudi’s King Salman, thousands of bot accounts retweeted Trump’s praise of the Saudi regime."
Thread 1/ During Biden's visit to the Middle East, there was much discussion about #Saudi Arabia and normalisation with Israel. As a result, the hashtag 'millions against normalization trended'. This analysis shows attempts to disrupt that trend with fake accounts #disinformation
2/ This is an analysis of around 40,000 tweets from 12 July until today. I downloaded tweets on the Arabic hashtag "millions_against_normalisation" and the rival hashtag "million_".
FYI: In Arabic, hashtags are often cropped by suspicious actors to sabotage trends
3/ The graph below shows the hashtag 'millions against normalisation" (MAN) in yellow, and the counter hashtag "millions_" (M) in red. This time series graph shows that while the MAN hashtag started first, the M hashtag kicked in about 2 hours later, out pacing MAN very quickly
[Thread]1/ This one's on #Morocco. A few days ago the trend 'degage Akhannouch' (get lost/get out Akhannouch) was trending. Akhannouch is Morocco's Billionaire PM under fire for (among other things) high fuel prices. This analysis shows lot of fake accounts operating on the #
2/ I analysed around 19,000 tweets between 14th-16th July. The below graph is just a time series of when the trend was most active over that time period. Nothing remarkable
3/ But an examination of the approximately 10,000 unique accounts reveals that between 2008 and July 16 2022, 522 accounts were created on a single day - 15th July and 796 in July. ( The average account creation per month is just 59). That is highly irregular.
1/A few people have been pointing out some pro-Boris copypasta, which invariably circulates when Boris is in the news (which invariably is often). The screenshot below gives an example. Although there are many theories about such tweets, this latest wave is curious for several
2/ reasons. If you analyse the copypasta you'll notice that the most influential tweet about the copypasta is an account calling it out. I.e. more people are joking/making fun of the copy pasta than those actually engaging in it. Awks.
3/ The initial copypasta trend began a while back, although was dormant for quite for a few days until yesterday, when a tweet making fun of the copypasta went viral.
As you can see below, the last time the copypasta was shared a lot was around 27th June.
An account set up in March 2022 has tweeted a quote attributed to a 'Qatar spokesperon', saying that those who hold up the pride flag will be arrested for 7 - 11 years. It's been retweeted almost 20k times and like +50k times. Problem is, no official ever said it.
It's not clear who set up the account, but it appears to have been set up in the wake of a BJP party member insulting the Prophet Mohammed, and has spent most of its time tweeting defending Qatar (ironically). It's not immediately obvious why someone would make up a direct quote
My sense is that it's someone more engaged with politics in Pakistan and India, but it could also be part of more regional campaigns to promote criticism of Qatar ahead of the World Cup , especially around LGBTQ+ issues. It could also be some conservative organisation, but I
[Thread] 1/ Today again in Qatar there is another fake trend, the hashtag 'Scandal of Joaan'. This one is focused on Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Al Rayyan bank. The network is identical to the one that targeted Qatar Museums yesterday. #disinformation
2/ The network is small, and the hashtag involves fake accounts retweeting what appear to be three or four other fake accounts. Like yesterday, the content is focused around a video about the 'scandal'.
3/ The tweet sequencing is the same, with the accounts programmed ( I am assuming) to RT aggressively in short intervals. As the graph shows, there are about 60 RTs per minute but only in short bursts. Again, around 96% of the network uses Twitter Web App - highly anomalous
