#GaneshChaturthi is a very very big day in Pune.

As sad as it is to bid farewell, #GaneshVisarjan is an even bigger deal!

It’s something you should absolutely try and experience first hand at some point.

It starts with the Rangoli. The boys and girls who do it are amazing artists specially since you practically get only one shot.

A constant fracture is the “Bhagwa” “भगवा”.

The other two constants are the people’s Smartphones and the Dhol Tasha troupes. This is the culmination of their efforts.

It’s incredible what they pull off in this heat and humidity.

Good to see some young ones too.

The Dhol Tasha troupes are playing almost all the time but occasionally they have to wait for their turn.

Sometimes they also get to get a well deserved rest. Some needing it more than the others.

The unique feature of the procession/ मिरवणूक is the specific sequence.

The first five slots are always reserved for the “Manache Ganpati” aka “मानाचे गणपती”.

The order is:
1) Kasba
2) Tambdi Jogeshwari
3) Guruji Talim
4) Tulshibaug
5) Kesriwada

#मानाचेगणपती
The first mandal is #kasbaganpati which happens to be Pune’s “gram daivat” which basically means the “God of the City.”

Capturing this murti was the toughest challenge of the day.

It is a privilege to be part of the troupe which plays in front of the “Murthi” and often has participation by celebrities.

The enthusiasm is very infectious!

The second Ganpati Mandal is “Tambdi Jogeshwari”

“तांबडी जोगेश्वरी”

The 3rd Ganpati Mandal is “Guruji Talim”

“गुरुजी तालीम”

The 4th Ganpati mandal is “Tulshi Baug”

“तुळशीबाग”

The fifth “Manacha Ganpati” is Kesriwada!

“केसरीवाडा”

There are many regular vendors making the essentials available for the devotees.

Each one of them mentioned, when asked, how #UPI has made their life so much easier, specially during the festival with the sudden surge in business.

While the “Manache Ganpati” are making their way forward, all the other mandals are patiently awaiting their turn to join in, including the famous ones like Dagdusheth, Mandai and Bhau Rangari.

The amazing decorations will come down soon but will leave a fond memory with all of us, at least till next year!

There are many other skills on display in the procession also.

And then there are the loyal Punekars!

While everyone comes out in HUGE numbers every year, this year as expected, the numbers were through the sky!

I believe there were a lot of people from out of town who also made their way down this year!

I rarely take panoramic views but these two came out well.

Please view them in Landscape mode.

I asked a young man to take the one since was closer to the crowd and taller.

He took it and said “I follow you on Twitter”

Nice meeting you @Akshaymalpekar!

Some business owners quickly adapted to make food and water/beverages available, which were clearly welcome as you can see.

Red Cross was providing free water and medical help.

Apte Road was a parking lot as expected!

I would have loved to go in the evening but may be next year!

For many, 15th August, 1947 was the summit in the fight to achieve Independence!

In reality, it was the base camp!

As we celebrate our 75th years of Independence, the question always comes up “Are we really Independent?”

And I feel that it’s relative!

#IndependenceDay
You have to look at it like vectors!

Relative change of position in a specific direction!

And in this case, that arrow has to point upwards, forwards and onwards!

So a visit to the post office the other day reminded me how much Independence we have truly achieved!
Starting with that very same establishment!

No longer does a parent with a child abroad have to wait weeks to hear from them in the form of a letter! They can receive multiple, May be too many, WhatsApp messages from them on a daily basis on their smartphones virtually free!

The search for something for our clinic landed me in the heart of Ravivar Peth!

Any true blue Pune 4 native has his roots in the original Pune aka “The city area” or Pune 30!

A thread of what was meant to be a 30 mins visit which turned into a 3 hour walk!

Enjoy…….
Small narrow by lanes with chock a block shops doing brisk business but run down houses above which are but a mere shadow of their glorious past!

A common theme you will see often in this thread…
Beautiful architecture…….

A daily wage labourer resting his tired limbs after a hard day of physical work!

Ropes, ropes and more ropes!

Every week, I get at least one phone call complaining of severe toothache, almost always in the molars. (Back teeth).

The patient comes in and the clinical examination and xrays show no cavities, and the tests for fracture are usually negative at this stage.

#Pune #Dentist
Usually it can only mean one of two things:
1) If the pain is restricted to the upper molar, then a recent of concurrent history of sinusitis/runny nose/cold etc. I typically see this around late November and the history is very clear.

2) BRUXISM!
What is Bruxism?

In plain and simple words, severe uncontrolled undesirable grinding of teeth against each other, usually occurs when the patients is asleep and the patient has no idea they are doing this.

The test is very simple. I will use my finger to test the Lateral

“Doctor why do I need to take this letter to my physician? It’s just a tooth l! Just take it out! What does my heart have to do with it?”

If you are a dentist, you have heard this line many many times!

Here’s why:

Old family friend.

Wife passed away many years ago due to
Cancer!

Son in the US!

Not much going on for him other than a job!

Over the last few years, ended up neglecting his health!

His diabetes was through the roof!

The 3 month average, HbA1C, was around 10 for years! (Even for diabetics it should be under 7)
Tried very hard to motivate him to address it! No change!

Wears an upper complete denture and has a few broken teeth in the lower jaw!

Met someone who got a full mouth implant rehabilitation done and so now wanted the same!

FINALLY got it to 7.5ish in December!

Great!

Dr Madhav Ghate, practising Psychiatrist, Pune writes on:

Why Tennis is so much more than a game!

I have been playing tennis for more than 55 years. Played it at the school, college, university level and even up to national and international levels.
I have also played many other games like Cricket, Table tennis, water polo, Athletics and so on. But gradually Tennis became my first passion. So much so that my wife used to say that it’s your first wife. Now after seventy years of life, looking back, I have realized that Tennis
has given me a lot of things beyond just the pleasure of playing the game. Without a doubt I can say that I ENJOY life. Every day ! Being a psychiatrist, I have a habit of analyzing things. You see, WHY is an extremely important question not just in psychiatry but in medicine in
