New paper out today @JTHjournal : "Genetic risk and incident venous thromboembolism in middle-aged and older adults following #COVID19 vaccination" . A short 🧵
1/n) Some #COVIDvaccines have been associated with increased risk of blood clots (VTE). We wanted to understand if genetic predisposition to VTE would predict risk of post-vaccine VTE, and if vaccination interacted with underlying genetics
2/n) We used data from @uk_biobank to investigate this, linking genetics, vaccination and health outcomes information. We generated a polygenic risk score using known variants, and studied associations between PRS and incident VTE immediately after vaccination, and historically
3/n) We included 359,310 vaccinated individuals, and saw 88 and 299 VTE within 28 and 90 days respectively. Genetic risk summary PRS was significantly associated with more VTEs in both cases, as well as in historical (prevaccine) data
4/4) Our findings suggest that, at the population level, VTEs after COVID-19 vaccination have a similar genetic aetiology to conventional (vaccine-unrelated) VTEs

New paper published in @bmj_latest : “Association between covid-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and risk of immune mediated neurological events: population based cohort and self-controlled case series analysis”. A 🧵 bmj.com/content/376/bm…
1) previous reports and research have suggested an association between some #CovidVaccines and immune neurological conditions including facial paralysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome. We had access to unique data to study this, and to research if #COVID19 itself can cause these
2) we studied data from Catalonia and the UK, including over 8 million vaccinated, 0.5m #covid19, & >14 million unvaccinated uninfected (historical data). We estimated rates of neuroimmune events post-vaccine and post-infection, and compared these to background (expected) rates
Our study “Comparative effectiveness of the BNT162b2 vs ChAdOx1 vaccine against Covid-19” is available and awaiting feedback at @medrxivpreprint . A short 🧵 medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
1/3- We analysed 235,181 UK Biobank participants aged 50 years or older and vaccinated with one or two doses of BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1. Follow up run until 18/10/2021. IPW weighting was used to minimise confounding, & negative control outcomes to rule out residual bias
2/3 - RESULTS: Compared w ChAdOx1, BNT162b2 was associated with 30% lower risks of both SARS-CoV-2 infection and #COVID19 hospitalisation. Findings were consistent across several subgroups and persisted for at least six months, suggesting no differential waning between vaccines
WE ARE RECRUITING 🥳🥳
We look for 2 senior or post-doctoral statisticians or data scientists to join my team at @UniofOxford Short 🧵to tell you why you should apply.
1) If you come & work with us you will access awesome large data to research #COVID19#COVIDVaccines and many methodological aspects of pharmacoepidemiology and the use of 'real world data'
2) You will work for one of the best academic institutions worldwide (@UniofOxford ), where you'll learn, work hard, and make a difference. You will have many opportunities to develop and grow, whilst enjoying yourself and making a difference
Nuevo articulo publicado en @bmj_latest : "Associations of BNT162b2 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission and death with covid-19 in nursing homes and healthcare workers in Catalonia: prospective cohort study" .
Nou article al @bmj_latest "Associations of BNT162b2 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission and death with covid-19 in nursing homes and healthcare workers in Catalonia: prospective cohort study" .
