#EU_China: Ex-PM Berlusconi (Forza Italia) advocates transforming the EU into a military power capable of protecting itself against any external threat. Despite the Russian war against Ukraine, Berlusconi turned his attention to China, which he believed would⤵️
combine old expansionism and modern globalized communism. He made a very strong comment about communism calling it the most inhumane system in history. In his opinion, the EU should develop its own defense capabilities in the military field. A few months ago,⤵️
Russia accused the EU of becoming a military bloc because it was providing military assistance to Ukraine (so far 2.5 billion euros). The EU should become autonomous by developing its own military defense capabilities in terms of manpower and local arms production industries. ⤵️
However, this should not mean decoupling from NATO, but gaining capabilities to make autonomous decisions and take military steps on its own if/when necessary.
@eleonoratafuro, did you see Berlusconi’s criticism against China?
#Moldova_Russia: There are voices telling that today’s protests in Moldova are a Russian plan. Such claims need more a careful analysis than a lazy "it's all about Russia.": 1) We have a situation where Russia could hijack the protests (which,⤵️
as Deputy PM Spanu said, brought together people who wanted to protest for various reason). 2) So, in the midst of all this, there are people who are poor and whose living conditions are getting worse (again, let's not all the talk about Russia alone). 3) What is also good to ⤵️
know is that (just as Yanukovych collaborated with Russia during Euromaidan and after) the different non-pro-EU opposition factions are ready to exploit pressures that have Russian origins (gas price) to get rid of the ruling party. 4) Shor and other groups of kleptocrats who ⤵️
#Armenia: The justification for any war or military hostility is deplorable and must be condemned. The fact that Armenia has voted one way or another on Russian aggression against Ukraine does not justify tolerating Azeri attacks on Armenian soil.
Pelosi also made statements in Taiwan (criticized by China). But the reason why her support for Armenia matters is because she condemned directly the hostilities coming from Azerbaijan. Macron has been less specific when he told Aliyev that military tensions should cease.
Disenchanted Armenians protest in favor of leaving the CSTO. I do not remember such protests in Armenia, maybe I'm wrong. The question of whether such protests could take place against the Eurasian Union. I'm not sure. Armenia benefits economically from the Eurasian Union.
#Moldova: As promised, I open a thread about the protests in Moldova, scheduled by the opposition from 15:00 (Chisinau time). You can read more about secondary roads in my previous threads. So, let's start the account (THREAD):⤵️
1) There are first reports (with video evidence) that people from the region are waiting for their buses to travel to the capital. They are supporters of the Shor Party. According to them, some transport companies refuse to take them to the protests because they were warned⤵️
not to do so. They obviously suspect the ruling party, but this is hard to prove as of now. We speak about isolated cases (so far). 2) One of the reasons why the protest is starting so late may be precisely because most of the protesters are expected to come from the regions.⤵️
#Ukraine: Romanian ex-MFA Marga's statement that Ukraine lies within “unnatural borders” provoked a swift harsh reaction from Kyiv. The statements of the Romanian intellectual (not a high-level politician at the moment) are perceived as irresponsible by Ukraine,
given that it fights against the aggression of Russia that is ready to redraw the borders and occupy Ukrainian territories. A reaction from the Romanian MFA would help clarify this incident and give peace of mind.
The last time the Romanian MFA Aurescu met with his Ukrainian counterpart Kuleba in Odesa and had an exchange on how to increase transport connectivity to help Ukraine's supply of goods.
#Moldova: All eyes on Sunday's anti-government protests which pro-Russian opposition forces will use to start mobilizing protest sentiments among Moldovan citizens. A couple of things to be taken into account:⤵️
1) The main organizer of the protests is Ilan Shor, whose party has the third most votable according to recent polls. 2) Shor is prosecuted for high-level corruption and involvement in the 2014 bank fraud. 3) The oligarch Plahotniuc helped him escape.⤵️
4) The Moldovan authorities are unsuccessfully trying to obtain the extradition of Shor from Israel (he also has Israeli citizenship). 5) His political allies are investigated on charges of illegal financing. 6) Shor is exploiting the Russian gas issue to capitalize on⤵️
#Armenia_Russia: Putin is trying to save face for Russia. He argues that the military hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia do not take place in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) patrolled by Russian peacekeepers, but on the border of the two countries. Perhaps Putin overlooks⤵️
(consciously) the following aspects: 1) Russia and CSTO have obligations towards Yerevan. They are security guarantors for Armenia along with other CSTO members, including those that lean towards the West (such as Kazakhstan);⤵️
2) Instead of transferring responsibility for deterring attacks from Azerbaijan, Russia might do better by proposing a new deal whereby it would move 1,000 of its peacekeepers from Karabakh to Armenia's border with Azerbaijan.⤵️
