“Contemporary imperialism is not European or Western” Several strong statements by 🇫🇷President @EmmanuelMacron in his address to the United Nations General Assembly general debate today #UNGA 🇺🇳. Key highlights: 🧵
The address was chiefly directed at the so-called “Global South”, in an attempt to mobilize against 🇷🇺 war on 🇺🇦 and to instill a counter-narrative to that of powers seeking to contest the international order:
Pdt Macron reminded the fundamentals and benefits of the current international order, with the universal nature of the #UN: “at the service of no hegemony or oligarchy”, one that protects hard-fought rights and principles such as “sovereignty, territorial integrity”
He insisted that it was not about “taking sides between East &West or North &South” as he emphasized the global impact of a war that “paves the way for other wars of annexation in Asia, in Africa or in Latin America” and increases the risk of “world division”.
🇫🇷 President reversed the usual clichés against the West - imperialism, neo-colonialism or double-standards - underlining that “what we are witnessing since Feb 24th is a return to the age of imperialisms and colonies”.
Particularly strong message to the “neutrals”: “those who pretend to mimic the non-aligned movement by not taking clear positions are wrong and have a historical responsibility. The non-aligned fought for peace, for States’ sovereignty, for territorial integrity…
“…Those remaining silent today, despite themselves or maybe with a form of complicity, serve the cause of a new imperialism, of a contemporary cynicism that fractures the international order without which peace is not possible.”
He also defended the sanctions: “who among you could consider that if something similar happened to you with a more powerful neighbor, regional or international silence could be the best answer?”, “who can believe that 🇷🇺 just has to win this war for us to move on?”
He described Russia’s action as a “territorial invasion coupled with a hybrid modernized war using energy prices, food insecurity, nuclear safety, access to information and populations flows as weapons for division and destruction”
At the same time, President Macron doubled down in defending dialogue with #Russia for which he was widely criticized in Europe, saying that he would continue to do so in a "quest for peace”
He clarified that “a negotiation will only be possible if 🇺🇦 sovereignly wants it and if 🇷🇺 accepts it in good faith” and that it will “only be successful if 🇺🇦sovereignty is respected, its territories liberated and its security protected”
🇫🇷 President also reiterated its refusal of an “attempt to divide the world in a way that fuels tension between 🇨🇳and the 🇺🇸”, describing it as “a fatal error for all of us”, recalling that “new forms of cooperation” are needed to face up to the manifold challenges.
He finally called for a "new contract" between “North & South” in fields such as climate change, health, education, poverty reduction, once again lashing out at 🇷🇺 and 🇨🇳: “Who gives development aid? Not those who are coming to you with proposals of a new world order”.
