Who'd like to end their week on a good feeling & help a group of predominantly #Native kids (mostly #Cherokee) in NE Oklahoma?😄 We all know Oklahoma schools are way underfunded, so field trips are few & far between. My mom teaches 7th/8th grade language arts at a rural school...
in Delaware County. She loves to read & introduce her students to classic authors, short stories & experiences they wouldn’t normally get in a small, rural school 60+ miles from Tulsa. Over the summer she found a theater company that caters to school field trips stopping in Tulsa
Chamber Theater Productions tours the country and performs classics like The Monkey’s Paw, The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Necklace, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, etc. Here’s a link: chambertheatre.com/encore Most of these kids have likely never been to a live play. 🎭
She worked with the theater group & let them know the school didn’t have a budget for this, and they were SUPER gracious, lowering their ticket price to $12.95 per student! So hats off to the theater group for being so wonderful to work with! 🎩👏
The school is asking each kid to pay $5 apiece & bring a sack lunch, which they’ll eat at a park. (the play is at the ORU Mabee Center, FYI). That means they are trying to find $7.95 per ticket x about 100 kids, so they need about $800 to cover ticket prices.
She’s been trying to figure out how to pay for this since probably July or August. The teachers/administrators have kicked around pitching in to pay for it, but I’m tired of teachers paying out of pocket for things our state will not provide. And FYI, no one asked me to do this.
But as the date of the show is creeping up (Oct. 11), I asked recently “so how is fundraising for your field trip going?” and she said they were probably going to pitch in and do it themselves. I said, “well... let me see if I can get some ppl to pitch in before y’all do that.”
To provide context, Delaware County is 25% Native American. Total household income (so men, women + children) is $44K. The poverty rate is nearly 20%. Kids these days don’t get field trips like we did & rural kids especially don’t get exposure to these kinds of experiences.
So if anyone would be so generous to contribute to this experience, you can mail/cut a check to:
Kansas Schools
700 North Woods Ave
Kansas, Oklahoma 74347
memo line: 7/8 grade language arts field trip
Ph: 918-868-2562 (if you are like me and cutting a check from your bank)
Again, the Kansas, Okla. 7th/8th grade field trip to see this wonderful set of classic short stories is Oct. 11 in Tulsa, and they need about $800 to cover the remaining student ticket price. Students are paying $5 of their own money. Wado!!! #TGIF #OklaED chambertheatre.com/encore

I’m speechless.
1. As an informed tribal citizen, I only found out late this afternoon there was a proposal to contract a private prison 6.5 hours away near Waco, TX to take tribal prisoners.
2. Our tribal council took <25 minutes to approve the plan.
I understand there are countless challenges with McGirt/Castro Huerta. But the fact that there is ZERO citizen input on major issues that impact SO MANY ppl is beyond frustrating. Whatever happened to community meetings/citizen input? 🤯 This doesn’t feel like a democracy anymore
Don’t you think ppl are going to be surprised when they find out they have to drive 400 miles 🤯😳🤯 to visit an incarcerated loved one? I guarantee most will find out only when they’re sentenced. And FYI, it’s not just Cherokees. It will be ALL tribal citizens AND non-tribal...

Why would Cherokee Nation put this on Facebook then restrict commenting? Lol… I’m going to guess a $500K fine 🤑 & 2 years in prison for ppl (not candidates & not JUST Cherokees) over a simple campaign violation feels Putin-esque 🇷🇺 even to the executive & legislative branches.
Keep in mind we don’t have political parties or issues-based campaigns in the Cherokee Nation. It’s literally just person to person matchups. So this is saying the ONLY way to put $$ to a political effort in ANY way is to put $ behind a PERSON. Which a lot of ppl don’t want to do
Being tribal, I get not wanting to take sides. Trust me, I’ve ridden the fence for years & been nice to everyone. I also get wanting to keep everything out in the open. But half a million $$ and 2 years in jail ain’t it. This feels like punishing political enemies & intimidation.

I’ve seen local news outlets report “what are the real numbers” on inmates released due to the McGirt ruling & write “we requested the info from Oklahoma Dept of Corrections.” It’s important to point out good reporting & give credit where it’s due, so I want to highlight this…
The reporter/outlet that actually requested and reported this info first was @alisonaher from @KOSURadio.
About a third of the way into this story you’ll see: “According to new data obtained by KOSU and the @OklaMediaCenter

kosu.org/politics/2022-…
the number of people… who applied to have their cases dismissed/vacated… is 235 since July 9, 2020 through December 31, 2021. While many have been referred to federal/tribal courts to have their cases retried, 67 were released from prison without having their cases retried.”

Yesterday two different white folks preached to me about “natural immunity” from viruses AND called hunting game “sport killing.” The ancestors worked overtime to keep me from recognizing the contributions of their missionary/colonizer ancestors with a bunch of Twitter awards.
I never hear brown ppl say “well… Guess we’ll just have to lose a few ppl. 🤷🏻‍♀️” You never hear Natives, or Black ppl, or other ppl of color say that. But you know who I HAVE heard say that in this pandemic??? 👀
Cause they know it’s probably not gonna be them who dies. 🎤 ✋🏽
My people — Native people — are not expendable. You won’t hear Natives wake up one day and say “welp! Looks like we might lose a few good ones today!” 🤷🏻‍♀️ No… because losing one of our traditional elders is like torching a book of cultural knowledge so we have to protect them.

This is awful!! 😭 "Whooping cranes are endangered, with only about 500 in the wild in North America." 😥
How many crane species are in Oklahoma?? I see some take a dip in our creek often during the summer, but I never thought twice about it.🤷🏼‍♀️ #OkWildlife oklahoman.com/story/sports/o…
Here’s video I took of one about a year and a half ago. (Sorry, the “gross” is in reference to my mom’s dog that was snotting on me).
And update! I've been informed this is a heron! Not a crane. But either way, unless it was some sort of nuisance or invasive species, why would anyone kill either one? They both seem awfully nice and calming to look at. 😥 We humans are literally the worst.

@OklaEsq So an article published today that sort of references toward the end what I’m talking about. The article focuses more on post-conviction/retrial, but this little snippet is at the very bottom…
@OklaEsq “Federal officials, for their part, have filed a handful of misdemeanor cases. Others may have been opened and not charged yet, a spokeswoman said.
"While the U.S. Attorney's Office is currently prioritizing felony prosecutions, this office can open cases for misdemeanor crimes…
@OklaEsq “…which are under $1,000, for non-Indian suspects victimizing Indian persons," said Lennea Montandon, spokesperson for the Tulsa U.S. Attorney's Office. "Our office refers misdemeanor thefts committed by Indian persons to the Tribes."
