Tomorrow, September 30th, is the second National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Canada. The "Orange Shirt Day" acknowledges survivors of (and those who died in) residential schools. The day was the TRC's Call to Action 80 and made a federal holiday last year. A settler's 🧵.
In the lead up to this year's holiday I was surprised (only a little) by the rapidity of the government's desire to re-embrace the 🇬🇧's colonialism. Particularly when the new sovereign is a religious crusader repeatedly rejecting calls to denounce the Doctrine of Discovery.
The monarch of the UK was accepted as Head of State in Canada without so much as a debate in the House of Commons. I hope that tomorrow causes more people in Canada to pause and think about the de-colonialization of our country and how to achieve Reconciliation in law and life.
#TheCaseAgainstPoverty threads repeatedly use the Crown as a noun because that's what our system is right now; it isn't a desire to keep having a Crown to deal with. Especially when officials double down on repressing indigenous voices while giving platforms to the convoy crowd.
There has been significant progress on Reconciliation in some areas but systemic abuse prevails because Canada's economy is a colonial model and the social construct normalizes behaviour that is actually harmful.
Politicians could begin with a public commitment to value Indigenous peoples more than foreign capital. We could stop Canadian mining companies from replicating the colonial abuses from here in the global south. Reconciliation can do a lot more for #PeopleNotProfit in general.
Keep an eye open to verify your #EveryChildMatters and #OrangeShirtDay merch is actually getting $ to Indigenous peoples & causes. In addition to the Calls to Action there are also 230 recommendations from the National inquiry on MMIWG(2S).

This just is about what is and what is not effective for preserving public health against a virus with severe short and long-term consequences. #CovidIsntOver, it is sensible to #BringBackMasks. The healthcare system is paying the price for appeasing ignorance and capitalism. 🧵
The #COVID19 outbreaks in hospitals are rising and "vaccine fatigue" suggests it is going to be a brutal flu & pneumonia season on top of rising COVID cases and more #LongCovid cases. 90 days masked and we could crush COVID rates and slow mutations. #BringBackMasks
It is sweaty and uncomfortable with a gown, gloves, mask, and shield on to be a caregiver in hospital for my BIL, but that is a tiny price of inconvenience to bear to prevent extreme and life altering (or ending) infections of #COVID19. #BringBackMasks cause #CovidIsNotOver.

Saturday Storytime...

As some followers know, I represented public servants including at ODSP where my job was for over a decade. I started getting 'in the room' around the same time as the Poverty Reduction Act, 2009 came into force. That unit came to our meetings to brief...
The main point of the Act required a target and a metric. Then programs got tagged for how they help meet the target. Ontario had no target and the prior government had gutted services. The Act made some sense. Without a goal and metric it is hard to measure pass or fail.
In comes the Poverty Reduction team to brief. They are really excited, and nice. They do the PowerPoint then we got to ask questions. Standard stuff. I ask why isn't it the Poverty Elimination Strategy, genuinely not to throw shade. They say the Act is about targets & reporting.
