🧵California's COVID sick pay policy is now extended through Dec 31.

It *was* set to expire Sept 30, but was just signed into law by Gov. Newsom.

This means that many folks can still claim up to 80 hours of COVID-related paid leave for another 3 months.kqed.org/news/11904834/…
Q. Who can claim this extended #COVID sick pay?

A. People who work in California for an employer of 26 or more people.

(As @CalMatters reported earlier in 2022, this excludes roughly 1 in 4 California workers. It also leaves out independent contractors.)kqed.org/news/11904834/…
Q. Can I claim this sick pay through Dec. 31 if I get COVID?

A. Yes, you can claim if COVID hits your household, and either YOU get sick or a family member has COVID & you need to care for them.

An employer may require you to provide test(s) as proof 👇kqed.org/news/11904834/…
Q. I don't have COVID. What are some other COVID-related reasons I can claim sick pay?

😷Going to get a vaccine or a booster (including a new bivalent booster)
😷Recovering from side effects from the above
😷Caring for a family member who's doing this☝️

Q. I already claimed California #COVID sick pay earlier this year. Does this extension through Dec. 31 mean I get up to 80 hours again?

A. No. You'll have access to up to 80 hours of paid sick leave *minus* whatever you've already claimed since Jan. 1.

Q. I got COVID. Can I claim this sick leave through Dec. 31 if I work from home?

A. Yes. If you work for a company that employs 26+ people, the paid leave is intended to grant you time off work to recover from #COVID, no matter where you *do* that work. kqed.org/news/11904834/…

Some Bay Area-based human rights advocates say they are horrified by a recent revelation that dozens of Alameda County Sheriff's deputies were hired after they failed psychological exams, dating back to 2016.

@MsHossaini and @emmaruthless reported on the story ⬇️
Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern said the 47 deputies will be retested. Meanwhile, they'll continue to work w/o weapons or contact with inmates.

Jose Bernal, Organizing Director at the @ellabakercenter, has followed conditions at the county's main lockup, Santa Rita jail.
“A jail that has been plagued with abuse after abuse...It begs the question of how many of these deputies were involved in what incidents,” says Bernal.

“They basically turned a blind eye at the expense of the general public and incarcerated individuals.”

MASK UPDATE: Starting Wed. Dec. 15 through Jan. 15, California will again employ a statewide mask mandate.

➡ This means that all Californians — regardless of vaccination status — will be required to wear a mask indoors.
➡ Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly cited a 47% increase in COVID case rates across California since the Thanksgiving holiday — particularly in places with low vaccination rates.

#COVID variants like #delta and #omicron are also factored into this decision.
What does this mean for the Bay Area?

➡ Dr. Ghaly says about half of Californians live in counties that have their own mask mandate already (like most Bay Area counties).

😷 This new statewide rule will cover the counties that have yet to impose this mandate.

🛣🚞The Bay Area is set to get $4.5 billion for infrastructure, including highways and transit from Biden's infrastructure bill, which has been touted as needed by BART, Muni, VTA, & Caltrain.

But one entity says the funding could lead to transformative transit in the Bay.
The Transbay Joint Powers Authority runs the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco.

The $2.2 billion transit center is host to transbay buses, but its leaders are looking toward a future when it can finally play host to another form of transit:

Trains.
(Its opening was a bumpy one. Check out @KQEDnews reporting on the cracked steel beams that delayed its operation:

EXPLAINER: Why is the sky orange this AM in the Bay Area? 🔶

You'll have guessed it was #wildfire smoke. The bulk of it, says @ggweather, is coming from the north, via light NW winds aloft. Some of that smoke is coming from way up in #Oregon.

But why so ORANGE?

(📸@RadioBWatt)
The sky is 🔶orange🔶 this morning, says @ggweather, because of the upper level density of all that #wildfire smoke.

The smoke filters out different levels of light from sun — and it's filtering out everything BUT those oranges and yellows.

(📸@teacupinthebay)
This 👆 is the reason it kinda looks like a weird sunset right now. It's the same filtering of the light that happens when the sun gets low and sets, says @ggweather.

And if you're wondering why it's so DARK? The thickness of smoke is filtering out MORE light⬛

THREAD: A patient at Napa State Hospital was having trouble with his medication in March 2017 and had an angry outburst in the courtyard.
Hospital Police Officer Michael Hauscarriague, the police chief’s son, “tackled” the patient into a concrete wall, breaking his eye socket and several teeth. The officer also banged his head, likely had a concussion.
Three other officers lied in reports and failed to interview many of the witnesses to the incident, a state investigation kept secret by police privacy laws later found.
