🧵California's COVID sick pay policy is now extended through Dec 31.

It *was* set to expire Sept 30, but was just signed into law by Gov. Newsom.

This means that many folks can still claim up to 80 hours of COVID-related paid leave for another 3 months.kqed.org/news/11904834/… Q. Who can claim this extended #COVID sick pay?

A. People who work in California for an employer of 26 or more people.

(As @CalMatters reported earlier in 2022, this excludes roughly 1 in 4 California workers. It also leaves out independent contractors.)kqed.org/news/11904834/…

Some Bay Area-based human rights advocates say they are horrified by a recent revelation that dozens of Alameda County Sheriff's deputies were hired after they failed psychological exams, dating back to 2016.

@MsHossaini and @emmaruthless reported on the story ⬇️ Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern said the 47 deputies will be retested. Meanwhile, they'll continue to work w/o weapons or contact with inmates.

Jose Bernal, Organizing Director at the @ellabakercenter, has followed conditions at the county's main lockup, Santa Rita jail.

MASK UPDATE: Starting Wed. Dec. 15 through Jan. 15, California will again employ a statewide mask mandate.

➡ This means that all Californians — regardless of vaccination status — will be required to wear a mask indoors. ➡ Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly cited a 47% increase in COVID case rates across California since the Thanksgiving holiday — particularly in places with low vaccination rates.

#COVID variants like #delta and #omicron are also factored into this decision.

🛣🚞The Bay Area is set to get $4.5 billion for infrastructure, including highways and transit from Biden's infrastructure bill, which has been touted as needed by BART, Muni, VTA, & Caltrain.

But one entity says the funding could lead to transformative transit in the Bay. The Transbay Joint Powers Authority runs the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco.

The $2.2 billion transit center is host to transbay buses, but its leaders are looking toward a future when it can finally play host to another form of transit:

Trains.

EXPLAINER: Why is the sky orange this AM in the Bay Area? 🔶

You'll have guessed it was #wildfire smoke. The bulk of it, says @ggweather, is coming from the north, via light NW winds aloft. Some of that smoke is coming from way up in #Oregon.

But why so ORANGE?

(📸@RadioBWatt) The sky is 🔶orange🔶 this morning, says @ggweather, because of the upper level density of all that #wildfire smoke.

The smoke filters out different levels of light from sun — and it's filtering out everything BUT those oranges and yellows.

THREAD: @PGE4Me on Tuesday filed for Chapter 11 #bankruptcy protection, a move the company insists is necessary to contend with at least $30 billion in potential liabilities growing out of the calamitous #wildfire seasons of 2017 and 2018. @PGE4Me In a simple voluntary petition filed just after midnight Tuesday morning with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, @PGE4Me estimated its liabilities at about $51 billion and its assets at more than $71 billion.
