On the eve of #GandhiJayanti , I am settling into my own assessment of his contribution and importance.

This thread is a reflection of my own assessment based on what I have read about Gandhi - through his own writings and others.

Will begin with Positives & then Negatives.

+
1. His understanding of the Indian past. Among the few who had no inferiority about the Tradition.
- Actively defended the Kula-Jati-Varna aspect of the Society
- Held the Indian Kings in great esteem.
- Understand the functional mechanics of the society, spoke its language

+
2. His understanding of Modernity and its evil dimension.

Hind Swaraj is the most scathing criticism of Modernity ever. May not contain complex abstract nouns, models, theories, hypothesis.

But represents fundamental issues of Modernity in a way all can understand.

+
3. His understanding of British Colonialism.

He clearly saw their might to transform a society to their convenience without the knowledge of the subjects. He saw beyond Politics.

He wrongly thought their own self image of people with high culture could be used against them.

+
4. His use of Indian cultural instruments/imageries

From posture to tone to language to symbols to imageries Gandhi deployed elements from Indian Culture to rally the cause of his Nonviolent Movement.

Few have since deployed our cultural instruments in that breadth, scale.

+
5. Created a sense of Political unity/Modern State

The cultural unity already existed. But, by being the single biggest voice, with reach across the country, Gandhi created a Political consciousness.

Would have happened without him too but his rallying around was very big.

+
6. Recognized the Evil of Alcoholism

Realised the dangers of alcoholism, that it was destroying the poor. Actively fought against it.

His solutions were impractical but his campaign brought focus on its destructive dimension.

We see that in certain states today.

+
7. Sense of Urgency towards ending Untouchability

Among all Traditionalists, Gandhi was the first to see the inhuman nature of Untouchability and the criticality of ending it. Sought to do so from within the Tradition.

We haven’t sufficiently understood/appreciated this yet.

+
8. His understanding of the inherent problems within Abrahamic Religions.

Contrary to our perceptions, Gandhiji had a good understanding of the aggressive nature of Abrahamic Religions/their destructive dimensions.

Our misfortunate it didn’t translate into useful action.

+
Now, for the -Ves.

1. The ost obvious one is his “Resolution complex” for H-M relations.

An absolute, unmitigated disaster. Led the H society towards a dark disastrous precipice & a Civilizational death trap.

Puzzling it happened despite his understanding of the problem.

+
2. Demeaning people & movements that used Force

His insensitivity towards them was so total. We carried over this disdain into the post independence period as well. Our History has been purged - no mention of armed resistance.

Only in the recent we are coming out of this.

+
3. His Positioning of Ahimsa as a Political Instrument

He transformed a Spiritual Instrument into a Political one with disastrous consequences. This works only against your own. It plays into the hands of an Enemy otherwise.

The loss of force handicapped India for long.

+
4. His undemocratic, highhanded leadership

Through & Through it was a my-way or high-way attitude. Convenient engagement with selective people & sidelining of others.

Tej Bahadur Sapru’s observation on Gandhi is quite telling in 1940s.

Led the movement into blind spots.

+
5. Finally, his excessive love and weakness for both Motilal Nehru and Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Unclear why this was so - a mystery. Terrible injustice to Patel. Finally, an injustice to India.

Only charitable explanation is that he wanted to keep an erratic Nehru within the fold.

+
The good thing is the psychological hold he had on the Indian mind is reducing. It was quite high even in the 80s, it began to wane in the 90s.

Indians still struggle to criticise Gandhi. It continues to be a cultural crime for many born before the 90s.

+
For many others, its a material necessity to keep Gandhi flag flying so. But that group is diminishing by the day.

We need some more psychological distance from both Gandhiji himself and disastrous realities that are unmistakably his legacy.

+
Until such time we will oscillate between absolute dumping and shutting ears against any criticism.

Long way to go still.

When Draupadi was disrobed and thereafter, we must remember the way each responded in the Kuru Sabha.

1. The general Sabhasada-s were shocked in horror but did not have sufficient courage to respond.

2. Dushyasana was the performer. He obviously derived a vulgar pleasure.

+
…But he would not have had the courage but for the authority of Duryodhana.

3. Shakuni was serving Duryodhana. He was the enabler but would never have been the performer. Not that mindless. Ever-ready to join the chorus. A very predictable behaviour.

+
4. Karna, of course, was the instigator. That Karna could stoop down to such a level is shocking. But one can understand. His personality is revealed progressively in Mahabharata. A sense of loss results in an eternal drift if you dont take charge.

Watched Panchayat Season-2. Completely mesmerised.

Finally something on Television/OTT that I could watch dropping my cultural-guard.

Reminded me of Malgudi Days and good old Doordarshan, which even in a socialist era brought out the essence of the society & culture better.

+
The most important positive about the Series is its portrayal of the society without pushing any ideological agenda.

The village is portrayed for what it is - the good, the bad & the ugly. And presenting all facets of the life within it.

The Village triumphs finally.

+
Before one marks anything else about the movie the praise must begin with
- the Writer Chandan Kumar &
- the Director, Deepak Kumar Mishra
- &, Of Course, the TVF

for the Vision/Conviction that this kind of a portrayal will sell & crafting a run-away hit version of it.

Technology has following dimensions.

1. The Process of its creation

2. Who benefits from the Technology and how, and who does not

3. Civilizational impact
- What problem does it solve and create
- What experience does it create and destroy
The value created by technology has its own past present and future.

Right now our focus is way too much the present.

We evaluate technology only based on who benefits materially today.

The socio, psychological impact of the process of creation & it's presence in the society..
... are totally forgotten.

This does not mean that we succumb to the divisive Social Impact Lobby. But we need to first develop our own way of thinking about technology.

It's important to note that if Technology is purely material then it affects our access to the Sacred...

The Hindu world has many things to offer. Among the many 2 important things.

1. A Philosophical basis & a set of frameworks for Diversity, Sustainability and so on.

2. A Performative Framework that is aligned with that philosophy consisting of 5 Kinds of Experiences in Balance.
Point 1 leads to a different Theory of Change and Time, very crucial for sustainability.

Point 2 is about a good composition of Performative, Consummatory, Aesthetic, Ritualistic and Renunciatory Experiences

Modernity significantly differs in both.
There are two choices in front of our society.

Find a place for yourselves within the Modern world, kind of a bubble.

Or

Digest the modern world within your Universe.

The former will be Apaddharma. The latter will be the real destination.

I dont have much insight into #ForeignPolicy . I do not understand the variables and dynamics very well.

But Philosophically India should be guided by the Framework of “Purushartha” in the Foreign Policy in general and situations such as Ukraine-Russia conflict in particular.

+
1. Artha

=> We should have a list of interests that we must protect that are key to our current existence and status. Eg., Arms for Security.

=> Nothing that we do should hurt our current strengths and positions unless a new strength/position can be gained

+
2. Kama

=> Once the non-negotiable Artha-s are secure, see what long standing desires can be fulfilled

=> Look for new possibilities

Eg., By taking a neutral position can we get something more from Russia. By partaking in Relief Operations, can we build new Relationships.

#Thread We have sense of the Challenge posed by the TRIAD (Modernity, Monotheism & Industrial Dynamic) to the Bharateeya Sanatana Flow.

The assault is on 3 D’mns.
1. The Narrative of #Change
2. The Narrative of #Time
3. The Narrative of #Experiences

#PerformativeExperiences

+
In this, we understand the Assault on the Narratives of Change and Time.

Narrative of Change => Economic World View, Linear Progress etc.,
Narrative of Time => Political World View, Individuality etc.,

+
However, we haven’t paid attention to the 3rd Dimension of Experiences.

Bharateeya Sanatana Parampara recognised 5 Kinds of Imaginations/Experiences.

1. Performative
2. Consummatory
3. Aesthetic
4. Ritualistic
5. Renunciatory
