Major COVID drug bites the dust—Merck’s #COVID-fighting antiviral #molnupiravir failed to prevent #COVID19 hospitalizations/deaths is a large trial of ~25,000 people, despite drug shortening recovery time & lowering viral load. Damn—COVID19 is a tough nut.
statnews.com/pharmalot/2022…
2) Yes #molnupiravir did improve recovery a little— but if you look at the chart, it was mostly just around the 7-12 day mark that the drug had biggest effect, and then the drug seemed to stay parallel and even converge with the placebo group beyond 2 weeks. ➡️benefit didn’t last
3) for the combined endpoint of HOSPITALIZATIONS/DEATHS… no obvious subgroup benefit. There was even a borderline increased risk in the immunocompromised (P for subgroup interaction=0.06, bordeline). Not sure if that is real or bad luck but it’s not good.
4) the shocker is that this trial stands in contrast with the previous trial of #molnupiravir that did show benefit against hospitalization/death. Same dose of 800 mg daily twice a day for 5 days—endpoint assessed at same 28/29 days. Weird.

5) To be clear - I have no conflict of interest. I do not own Merck stocks nor have I traded any Merck stocks. Drug has been sold on the market since Dec 2021 under an FDA EUA.

6) FDA EUA authorized #molnupiravir but with a few caveats: “As a mutagenic ribonucleoside antiviral agent, there is a theoretical risk that molnupiravir will be metabolized by the human host cell and incorporated into the host DNA, leading to mutations.”
covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/anti…
7) “In addition, there have been concerns about the potential effects of molnupiravir on SARS-CoV-2 mutation rates; the FDA has required that the manufacturer monitor genomic databases for the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants.” 👀

➡️This is why many scientists are not big fans.
8) Thus, “The COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel recommends using molnupiravir as an alternative therapy in nonhospitalized patients aged ≥18 years with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk of disease progression ONLY when (Paxlovid) & remdesivir are not available”

I hate this—Congressional stock trading scandals, from suspiciously trades at start of #COVID pandemic to members of Congress failing to comply with disclosure requirements, have prompted calls for reform. But they are “fake” reforms—thanks @waltshaub

2) “To say the bill is weak, however, would be an understatement. The bill is dangerous. It would undermine what little ethics we have in our federal government.” ~@waltshaub
3) it “bill would replace the government’s strict blind trust requirements with a regime that would permit fake blind trusts, like one Trump invented. Backing a bill that would allow fake blind trusts—Trump’s greatest scam—should shock us into paying attention.” @waltshaub

OF COURSE FLORIDA… Facing a Dire Storm Forecast in Florida, Florida Officials Delayed Evacuation until it was too late. Downplay the risks… people die. Welcome to Florida’s failed leadership… again. #HurricanIan

This is indeed DeSantis’s fault… how do we know? almost ever Florida official hails its state’s Dear Leader DeSantis for his “leadership”.
Meanwhile FL Governor DeSantis is blaming victims for not evacuating despite no evacuation order given until it was too late. What leadership hogwash.

⚠️Geeeeezzz—2 healthcare workers who wore full PPE (N95, gloves, gown, goggles) got #monkeypox in 🇧🇷 after visiting monkeypox patient. Despite **washing hands**, the 2 female HCWs both positive days later. ➡️They didn’t sanitize the clipboard & sample box! wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/28…
2) However, “From the time they entered the patient’s home to the end of the interview, the HCWs did not wear gloves; after the interview, both HCWs sanitized their hands with 70% ethanol and donned latex gloves to collect samples.” ➡️that’s also a mistake. Room contaminated.
3) The other clear mistake was they should have doffed the contaminated gloves and PPE immediately after leaving the patient’s house. They should not have worn the PPE while traveling back to the lab. The vehicle they were in probably got contaminated - later exposure.

UK 🇬🇧 is entering its 4th wave of #COVID19 in one year. Led by Conservative leaders who don’t give a damn about even hospital 🏥 admissions, vaccinating kids, school safety, all while NHS staff burnout & quit … I worry how bad this fall and winter will be. #CovidIsNotOver Image
Thank god at least UK 🇬🇧 saved its economy by ignoring COVID…. Oh wait…
3) Hospitalizations for #COVID surging across Western Europe, not just in UK. Autumn has barely begun. How bad will it get by winter? Unclear trajectory because we have over a dozen worrisome variants now, not a single variant wave anymore. Worried. Image

Holy shit—if you haven’t followed the near total collapse of UK🇬🇧 economy today, you missed out. Bottomline— Bank of England just did a massive single day bank bailout of £65 billion… using taxpayer money… in order to prevent banks and pension fund failing for millions. Epic🧵
These 65 billion GBP used in the bailout will be ultimately become losses by UK taxpayers and not the banks themselves.
And yes, TAXPAYERS will be on the hook.

A metro area of 300,000-400,000 people are about to be submerged underwater in Florida. Don’t look at the storm surge animation below if you want to pretend everything is okay. #hurricaneian
Literally THOUSANDS of buildings in downtown Cape Coral will be underwater.
Some people are insane. This is right now today. (The video is dated wrong)
