I know civic elections are only just over but: if you're an Anjali follower, what is your next step when she's disqualified this week?
Elizabeth Cull presents her findings on the NDP membership investigation on Wednesday. The party brass know the contents of the report.. #bcpoli
We all know this disqualification is coming. Dave Eby isn't even bothering to campaign for leadership, and his website has the look of a placeholder he paid about $199 for.
So what happens next?
It's critical those who felt full of hope & signed up for memberships under Anjali not be cut loose with nowhere to go - & not become cynical & disaffected with politics entirely. Esp youth. This was always the unaddressed risk of this 'strategy'...
It seems unlikely Anjali will advocate that her followers switch to the Greens once she's disqualified. She's a lifelong NDP partisan & is now saying so explicitly (even if saying that is just tactical this week). Will ENGOs try to switch her followers Green before they tune out?
I think what needs to be laid out immediately, & I'm sure Greens will be on this, is: 1. Anjali's platform was more or less lifted from the Green platform. On everything: environment, economics, jobs, social justice, anti-privatization of health. It's the same political vision..
2. The key Q: what is the key vehicle for change electorally (to support the most important activity, grassroots organizing)? NDP must be reduced to a minority with Greens having balance of power. We won't achieve transformation with either of the 2 parties in a majority govt..
We can achieve an NDP minority under our wretched First Past the Post system: by electing Greens in key ridings & forcing the NDP back into power-sharing. But it will take all the energy & ingenuity of those who flocked to Anjali leadership to now help Greens in those ridings...
New members, esp younger people, may become demoralized and turned off if the next steps aren't laid out clearly once Anjali Appadurai is disqualified. She should not be disqualified; the NDP should let this play out. But that's not what I think is going to happen.
You do not have to be a hyperpartisan to join a political party. You can do it tactically (only reason I ever join parties). Many joined BC NDP tactically to support change/Anjali. That's absolutely legit & accepted in this country. A switch to Greens now will be a similar move.
The Green party has a chance in a larger number of ridings now. It is not the party it was under Andrew Weaver; anyone who's been following Sonia's work and positions can see this. She's also currently the only real opposition in this province.
So many conversations today either ended or began with something like:
"So do you think the NDP will disqualify Anjali tomorrow? If so, what reason can Cull use for disqualification? NDP people think they'll disqualify, but how?"
.. And here are the recommendations of Elizabeth Cull (you may know her from her culling of BC's family doctors in the 90s) to disqualify @AnjaliApp from the NDP leadership race.

Just heard that at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Covid cases just doubled overnight - and that's before all the test results are in. They expect it to go higher.
We now also have immune-escaping variants rising exponentially in N. America. Where is the mask mandate? #bcpoli
The govt has misplaced the mask mandate somewhere in a closet, right next to a rational policy response to climate change
Meanwhile at a Nanaimo LTC apparently more residents now have Covid than don't, and so many staff are out sick that HCWs who are still standing are having to work far too many shifts.
To belabour the obvious, the BC govt is refusing to protect us or our health system.
@KarinaZeidler And to anyone, left or otherwise, who imagines the pandemic is over despite this impressive collection of stats that it is now more deadly than it has ever been and disabling millions, I can't help you.
Hey parents across BC - look out for these anti-mask, anti-vaxx, anti-protection, anti-everything candidates for your local school boards. Avoid avoid avoid
Teacher friend saying: "Trustees are in charge of the budget - which affects EVERYTHING. All programming, whether enough EAs or teachers are hired, what projects get prioritized...And they hire & fire board people. Advancement of either good or bad leaders comes down to them."
And everyone - don't respond to any anti-mask cranks who respond to this thread. I'll be hiding replies and blocking them. Don't give them the airtime or satisfaction of a response. Thank you!
People really can be made to do anything against their own interests
Govt doesn't care about your mounting health damage from Covid infections & reinfections; it won't be paying for your declining health. You will, via Telus
When you don't wear a mask indoors, it's dark sci-fi.
As someone who works in communication and strategy, I'm actually in awe of the success of BC's communication campaigns on Covid, which involved taking a garden variety PHO and beatifying her into a saint to pull off a larger policy of few measures & public openness to infection.
Despite international press detailing the grimness of Sweden's model of sacrificing many so society could stay "open," Henry openly stated she was following the "Swedish model but with fewer deaths" (we later learned BC was simply under-counting deaths) & BCers fell into line.
This morning, the civil/mechanical engineer has some further worries about #SiteC re: its design. I'll screenshot what he wrote (you can also read it in the Alt text).
His remarks arose from seeing this recent #SiteC construction photo from @BCHydro. Site diagram for reference.
@bchydro We invite anyone from @bchydro to respond to this civil engineer's concerns. Too many engineering/ construction experts have raised red flags about #SiteC's safety. The dam has already failed during construction so their fears are built on facts more solid than the dam. #bcpoli
@bchydro A few further remarks from an engineer: "Another thing we don't know is how on earth they'll attach the earthfill dam to the concrete on the north and south ends, esp the south side against the buttress. These are both shear connections... with soft banks..."
I helped a family move. The company said they'd deliver everything by July 2. It wasn't delivered til last night, July 19. For two weeks they lied about where things were, wouldn't answer phone calls or emails...
AVOID AVOID AVOID.
After 2 weeks I searched Twitter & found someone else who'd had the same problem, the same lying & runaround, until they reported them to Better Business Bureau. I finally did the same which seemed to trigger delivery. But Starway is a nightmare. Do not use.
A family with few resources & small children spent 20 days sleeping on the floor in a house in a strange town with none of their belongings - no beds, nothing. And the moving company wouldn't answer phones or explain where their stuff was. They had no idea if they'd see it again.
