Starting yesterday, 10/25, the US-funded National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is co-hosting the “Global Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy (WMD)” in Taiwan. Let’s take a look at what the NED’s presence in Taiwan means for democracy and peace. (spoiler: it’s not good)
First, some context.
China has been a founding member of the United Nations since 1945. At the time, the country was also in the midst of a civil war at that time. At the end of the war, the Kuomintang government, Republic of China (ROC), faced defeat and retreated to Taiwan.
The Communist Party of China established the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The PRC was soon recognized by many countries in the Global South as the victor in the civil war. However, the US and many in the West took their time recognizing the PRC.

On October 25, 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 by a 76 to 35 vote, restoring the lawful rights of PRC in the UN and recognizing the representatives of PRC as “the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.” digitallibrary.un.org/record/192054?…
To China, 10/25 commemorates the restoration of its rights and the solidarity of the Global South in this significant vote. Now, after 50+ years of peaceful US-China relations, the NED is holding a conference in Taiwan, which the US officially recognizes as part of China.
“It’s for democracy though, right?”
Not quite…
The NED’s history shows time and time again it was used to advance US interests and meddle in the internal affairs of sovereign countries, toppling foreign governments in the name of “democracy.” countercurrents.org/2022/05/the-na…
For example, the NED has spent millions to destabilize Venezuela. Early on, the NED funded groups that were responsible for ousting left-wing leader Hugo Chavez. Later, the NED and the US also supported right-wing leader Guaido with funding and training.
counterpunch.org/2014/04/25/the…
In the ‘90s, an NED-funded organization overtly supported the rise of the right-wing opposition in Mongolia, opening up its natural resources to extraction by foreign entities.
jacobin.com/2017/11/mongol…
In Bolivia, we see the same: “democracy” efforts undermining popular leaders to promote US business interests.
bostonglobe.com/2020/02/06/opi…
And we of course can’t neglect NED efforts to support the right-wing in Ukraine prior to Russia’s invasion: jacobin.com/2022/02/maidan…
"A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA," - Allen Weinsten, co-founder of the NED.

We could look at any number of countries in the past 40 years and find the NED interfering.
washingtonpost.com/archive/opinio…
As the US continues to inflame relations with China, the NED’s conference there signals yet another effort by Washington to undermine the diplomatic agreements which have been the bedrock of global peace and cooperation for decades. The US needs to know that #ChinaIsNotOurEnemy.

Why do weapons companies have more power than working people in the US?

In the latest from @stephensemler in @jacobin, he explains how the military-industrial complex gets its power. Here are some of his key points: 🧵

jacobin.com/2022/10/pentag…
Currently, military spending continues to reach all-time highs, with Biden's Pentagon budget topping Reagan's. 2/

jacobin.com/2022/10/pentag…
Of the enormous war budget, most of it is going to private companies. This means taxpayer money is being continuously funneled away from public goods and into the pockets of war profiteers. 3/

The bravery of Kurdish and Iranian women demanding justice for #MahsaAmini is remarkable. We stand with them as they fight for equality and freedom for the women of Iran.

As we witness this struggle continue, it is imperative we resist any and all moves from the US and other Western powers to unilaterally intervene to secure their own interests. Women bear the harms of sanctions and war more than anyone else.
There is a long history of US-backed state violence in Iran that protestors are acknowledging and resisting. Now is not the time to settle geopolitical battles, but to prioritize justice and peace. Image

This week at the UN General Assembly, leaders from across the Americas made strong stands with the people of Cuba and Venezuela against US economic and political warfare.🧵
"The only legitimate sanctions are those imposed by the Security Council to enforce decisions taken to maintain international peace and security... Argentina calls for the lifting of the blockades imposed on the people of Venezuela and Cuba"
- @alferdez 🇦🇷
"Today, the war punishes the world's poorest... We proclaim a return to respect for the self-determination of the peoples rejecting the infamous and brutal blockade... It is time to seriously discuss the multipolarity of the world."

21 years ago today the US used the tragedy of 9/11 to launch the “War on Terror.” There’s countless costs of this predatory use of people’s fear and grief to justify war. We look at 21 costs of war.🧵
1) @CostsOfWar estimates that the death toll of the global “War on Terror” is 900,000 lives lost. Of course the number is much greater when considering more indirect deaths from displacement, deprivation, and instability US intervention created.

2) In terms of spending the cost estimated by @CostsOfWar is $8 trillion. This is not an abstract number, but its own death toll. How many lives could’ve been saved if those $8 trillion had been invested in sustainable infrastructure, healthcare, education. etc.

CODEPINK condemns the Biden administration’s decision to give $3.5 billion in Afghan assets (half the amount currently frozen in the US Federal Reserve Bank) to 9/11 families.

Here’s why ⬇️ 🧵
Afghan funds do not belong to the US.

For the US to give away assets that rightfully belong to Afghanistan is tantamount to theft. Full stop.
The US isn’t *just* stealing funds. It’s seizing funds from one of the poorest countries in the world. The Afghan people are starving while the war profiteers who exploited Afghanistan for 20 years continue to make a killing on killing.

What's more degrading than being forced to demolish your own home or else pay your oppressors to do it for you? That's the decision Palestinians in #Silwan have been forced to make. Today, those who couldn't bear to demolish their home will watch as Israel demolishes it for them.
Approximately 1,500 Palestinians, including an estimated 930 children, in Silwan face violent forced displacement by Israeli authorities. Many of the dispossessed Palestinian families have lived in their Silwan homes for generations. #SaveSilwan
The US and much of the world remain silent as Israel *illegally* demolishes Palestinian homes and ruins Palestinian lives to make way for a religious theme park.

This is ethnic cleansing– plain and simple. And it must END. #FreePalestine
