IT'S A CRISIS: As we approach 2023, it's time to reexamine+scrutinize America's homelessness policy. What's working? What's not? @DiscoveryInst1 out w/ NEW report showing "HOUSING FIRST" is a failure. But there is hope+other solutions. @WhiteHouse@POTUS@HUDgov#WashingtonDC
HOUSING FIRST IS FAILING: In 2013, Congress passed a law requiring federally funded assistance programs to apply "Housing First" formula. Advocates said it would end homelessness by 2023—in other words, by next year. So why is crisis getting worse? READ👇🏽 fixhomelessness.org/2022/housing-f…
OTHER STATES EMBRACING HOUSING FIRST: In Seattle/King County… gun crimes tied to homeless encampments jumped 122% during first half of 2022. In Portland, Oregon, 50% of all arrests between 2017 and 2020 involved homeless, even though their share of population was less than 2%.
HOMELESS INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX: Dr. Robert Marbut Jr. says "housing first lobby" is real. He's experienced it first hand. While housing must be part of solution, there are multiple groups in this space that stand to PROFIT financially if model remains.
DC DRIVE: The moment Dr. Robert Marbut Jr. and I landed in the nation's capital, our UBER driver knew EXACTLY where the homeless encampments were set up. What does the rest of the WORLD think about America's slums? City is apparently still SWEEPING. #WashingtonDC#AMERICA#Crisis
WALK IN THE PARK: It's unclear when @MayorBowser will clear this massive homeless encampment just blocks away from the @WhiteHouse. But new tents are being set up daily. There's also an eco-system of free food and services. #WashingtonDC#America#Crisis
INCREDIBLE EFFORT: During my time in #WashingtonDC, I got to meet some campers like Daniel Kingery. He's lived in McPherson Sq. for more than 2 years. He's known as the elder statesmen and does his part to beautify the area. Wish I had more time to go in-depth on his story.
HOT TAKE: "Housing costs are a problem in some big coastal cities and a few others. Local governments should reduce burdensome regulations+building fees to encourage affordable housing construction. But addiction and mental illness are larger problems." fixhomelessness.org/2022/limits-of…
UNCLE SAM ENABLING HOMELESSNESS: "A not small percentage of homeless adults first experienced homelessness as children. The figure is 20% for homeless adults in Los Angeles, 18% for Seattle and Santa Cruz and 15% in San Francisco."
WHERE IT’S FAILING:
“Though lack of housing is
a major factor, it
is erroneous to view homelessness as primarily— let alone solely—a housing problem that can be solved through a “Housing First” approach that ignores untreated mental illness and drug addiction.”
After carefully reviewing @thehoffather's video, dude with the Green Day hoody blocking the Jewish student at the University of Washington is none other than Gabriel Jones, a notorious far-left activist who assaulted me at a protest last year in Seattle. But when I defended myself, Jones claimed to be the victim and filed a Protection Order against me. Of course I won in that case and Jones has stayed away from me ever since.
Anyway, he is not a @UW student, but a loser outside agitator and Seattle Public Schools(@SeaPubSchools) worker.
According to his Linkedin page, this antisemite is a Special Education worker at Chief Selth International High. Can't believe SPS still employs this FAR-LEFT activist with violent tendencies.
Jones harassing journalist @KatieDaviscourt last year as well.
ABSOLUTE MADNESS: Monday evening, more than a hundred migrants invaded Seattle's Central District and took over Powell Barnett Park, a popular play area for kids and dogs. There are now more than 30 tents set up on a grassy area and wooden pallets are scattered everywhere.
Group leaders say they won't leave until more money is provided for better living conditions. Sure sounds like extortion.
The usual far-left activists were there to help orchestrate this massive move. Old friend Rosario Lopez Hernandez spotted me right away and chased me out of the encampment with a cardboard box. She's facing charges for disrupting a Seattle council meeting in February.
Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth and Mayor Bruce Harrell say there are no more city resources and state funds won't be available for a few more months.
So now what? I'm staying on top of this with @FrontlinesTPUSA.
They are asking the public to donate resources so they can illegally stay in a city park. They don’t even allow the homeless
to do this anymore.
Earlier this month, this same group of migrants ran out of cash and got kicked out of a Kent motel. So they took over Garfield tennis courts to demand more loot. A donor helped them stay in the motel for a few more weeks, but that money has also run out.
BREAKING: Plymouth Housing's Lewiston-Scargo claims another victim. Mike Matzick's lifeless body was found inside this "low barrier" apartment complex in downtown Seattle. His family suspects he died of a meth overdose because staff allegedly turn a blind eye to drug use.
Matzick was one of our courageous whistleblowers who helped expose the deplorable conditions inside this problematic housing project back in February. It's led to more scrutiny for Plymouth and calls for immediate change.
I've reached out to Plymouth Housing staff for the number of residents who have died of drug overdoses this year in their facilities. So far no response. Since our devastating story aired, CEO Karen Lee has been on a crisis management tour.
UPDATE: Thursday afternoon, King County Court found Rickesha Denise Overton incompetent to stand trial. That simply means she will now be getting psychiatric care at a state institution and then re-evaluated after 90 days. The case and charges are still active.
Next court date is July 11.
WARNING GRAPHIC: I've obtained surveillance video showing the horrific death of Alisia DeCoteau at the Ellis Court Apartments in Seattle last month.
Rickesha Denise Overton was charged with Murder in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. She has a competency hearing today.
Court documents show the women knew each other and were friends at one point. But witnesses say they were arguing that evening. As for the shooting, the surveillance video shows Overton's gun jamming as she allegedly tries to fire more shots. Cops say she also pointed the pistol at horrified neighbors before officers arrived.
The suspect initially told officers, “She came into my apartment. It was self-defense. I had to shoot her.”
But later told police, “She’s not even dead.”
“I don’t care if you give me life. I just want to go to Alisia’s funeral,” Overton added.
