Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, former CJI MN Venkatachaliah, Justice DY Chandrachud and other luminaries will shortly address a gathering at the book release of "Soli Sorabjee - A Great Maestro" by V Sudhish Pai.
Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman speaks: For me, this event is both heart warming and significant.
It is significant because it is honoured by the presence and active participation of three Chief Justices.
Sr Adv Nariman: As per me, in early 2021 Soli & I were perhaps the only living lawyers who would proudly say that we had witnessed first hand the marvels of Sir Jamshedji Kamga.
Sr Adv Nariman: My deep regret at losing my friend is that there's no one left from that chamber that I can continue to reminisce with.
Sr Adv Nariman: My regret today is that in this super scientific 21st century, all that science can do is animate images but there is no possibility of communication with those who have gone on. The sadness is in the realisation that we'll never meet or see Soli again.
Sr Adv Nariman: It is also Soli's innumerable friends who fondly think of him.
Former Attorney General KK Venugopal speaks: I wish I had Fali's vibrant voice. After Covid, half my voice is gone, but I am hoping to recover it.
Venugopal: I knew Soli from the early 1960s when I used to come to Delhi to argue Motor Vehicle cases.
Venugopal: In his personal life, he was a man of cultivated taste.
Venugopal: In law, he has left his indelible mark. He is also best identified as a classical music enthusiast.
Venugopal: He showed tolerance in a multi-religious and multi-cultural nation. I always admired that. He will always have a place in our hearts.
Attorney General for India R Venkataramani speaks: I tried to recollect chapters of my own association with Mr Sorabjee. Many of his chamber mates and juniors were more fortune having been blessed with close interactions.
R Venkataramani: The growth of law post Constitution.. Mr Sorabjee understood the role of a lawyer as a contributor.
I think it's important to engage in studying the lawyers inputs to judicial outcomes.
R Venkataramani: Jurisprudence is always a part of Mr Sorabjee. I wish I had learnt more from him.
Justice DY Chandrachud speaks: It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of this book release. Soli Sorabjee brought dignity and ingenuity to the profession.
Justice DY Chandrachud: His legal accumen came only second to his versatility.
Justice Chandrachud speaks of his artistic endeavours.
Justice DY Chandrachud: Soli, while serving as the AG, did not pledge his loyalty to the government of the day.
Soli might have declined the offer of judgeship, he was deeply concerned with he justice delivery system.
Justice DY Chandrachud: He had argued that mere increase in no. of judges without improvement of infrastructure would be inadequate to tackle pendency.
Justice DY Chandrachud: Due regard is not given to lawyers who shape jurisprudence through submissions in court.
Justice DY Chandrachud: His contribution on jurisprudence to judicial review of state action deserves mention. Soli's was an important voice in the Constitutionalisation of administrative law.
Justice DY Chandrachud: Soli interloped the basic principle of admin law to challenge the actions of the executive head.
Soli, on the imposition of emergency, he stepped into the field of public law and secured the rights of numerous citizens.
Justice DY Chandrachud: We learnt by example that our fidelity to Constitution must not be compromised.
Former CJI MN Venkatachaliah speaks: (audio unclear) he was a sound and distinguished lawyer.
Chief Justice of India UU Lalit releases the book.
CJI Lalit speaks of his learnings and experiences while working at the chambers of Sorabjee: All these cases bring goosebumps.
They are milestones in my career.
CJI: He was a true legal philosopher. He never lost an opportunity, with certain ideas in mind to do something good in society. He was a great teacher. Those 5 and a half years, he set an example for us by each case that he argued.
CJI: He faught long drawn out battles.
CJI Lalit: One area which I always associate with him is the extent of freedom of speech and expression, which was very close to his heart.
CJI Lalit quotes sentences from Soli Sorabjee's articles on the scope of Article 19(1)(a).
CJI Lalit: We considered ourselves privileged as we could see a superlative mind working on legal problems. Hats off to my former senior. It's a very joyous moment for me to be a part of the celebration.
Zena Sorabjee gives a vote of thanks.
