@SussexUni For decades, we have been encouraging governments to address fossil fuels directly, knowing that they are the biggest driver of climate change. But what is actually happening in the world and who is in the lead? This new Fossil Fuel Tracker helps answer that.
@SussexUni All major scientific reports show new fossil fuel projects are incompatible with a livable planet yet self-proclaimed climate leaders keep approving new poisonous projects to the detriment of public health, biodiversity & security.
Overall, governments are not doing enough to tackle fossil fuel production and burning the world’s fossil fuel reserves would result in seven times more climate pollution than what is needed to keep warming below 1.5ºC.
But change is slowly happening and despite the naysayers, tackling fossil fuel production is possible. For instance, the governments of Ireland, France, Germany and Bulgaria are banning hydraulic fracturing.
This new Fossil Fuel Tracker is a living resource and is “vital to creating transparency” according to @PeterJNewell_. Its data being crowdsourced from researchers around the world and through it, we hope to push supply-side policies up the agenda at #COP27 and beyond.
@PeterJNewell_ According to the data gathered so far the USA has the most supply-side policies in place at 549 BUT this does not make them a climate leader - the progress is at the city and state level with 84 moratoria, bans and limits in place.
@PeterJNewell_ And as COP27 kicks off this weekend, the hosts, Egypt, only have one supply side policy in place. Egypt cut oil subsidies by 40% in 2019.
@PeterJNewell_ Tell us what kind of policies YOU need for your campaigns and how this tool can be refined to support your work. You can even watch this demo from @Fred_Daley on what the tool is tracking, why, and how it can be put to use:
@PeterJNewell_@Fred_Daley .@DrUenal also digs into how AI featured in the development of this tool to “accelerate the data gathering process and thus allows us an almost real-time monitoring of developments”, which was built with freely available software:
@PeterJNewell_@Fred_Daley@DrUenal A comprehensive database for these policies hasn’t existed. So if you’re a govt looking for best practices or if you’re a campaigner trying to identify gaps in your region of the world, this tool provides evidence-based hope fossil fuel production can be restricted & phased out.
@PeterJNewell_@Fred_Daley@DrUenal And when paired with the Global Registry of Fossil Fuels - the world’s first public database of fossil fuel production, reserves and emissions - we can have a full picture of where fossil fuel production is happening and who is (or isn't) taking action aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/19…
@PeterJNewell_@Fred_Daley@DrUenal Check out the tool at fossilfueltracker.org and share your feedback to info@fossilfueltracker.org on additional layers, insights and applications that could be added to the tool in the near future.

2. Then on Thursday hear a #tedx talk from @Fridays4future leaders sharing stories from around the world of young people taking on the fossil fuel industry.
Today we see faith institutions representing 1.5B+ persons call for a #FossilFuelTreaty in response to govt action being "painstakingly slow & catered too much to the reckless & deceptive fossil fuel corporations"🧵
Religious institutions have led the way on divesting from fossil fuels, playing a vital role in major climate mobilization. They now join this #FossilFuelTreaty call "to remedy the decades of negligence" & "heal the planet & people alike" as stated in their letter.
Faith leaders are part of a growing movement that recognizes fossil fuels are the greatest contributor to climate change. That list includes the likes of @WHO, European Parliament, Vanuatu, 101 Nobel Laureates and leading academics. See the full list: fossilfueltreaty.org

💰 Undermine African development, saddling countries with more debt & stranded assets
☀️Prevent finance going to energy access & a transition to clean energy in Africa
.@EU_Commission 🇪🇺 needs to stop jeopardizing Africa’s development & access to electricity. Instead, as @marietouss1 says, EU leaders must support a #JustTransition in the continent & accelerate a renewable based energy system globally.
You'll want to go see @mitzijonelle & @NakabuyeHildaF give this #TEDx talk on the ways young people around the world are standing up to the fossil fuel industry.
🚨 Breaking 🚨 The European Parliament just called for nation-states to “work on developing a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty” in its formal #COP27 resolution.
This is a major development in the global push for a #FossilFuelTreaty.
Just 3 weeks ago, H.E. President Nikenike Vurobaravu, President of Vanuatu, invited governments to join them in developing a #FossilFuelTreaty at #UNGA – sparking a wave of diplomatic support for the proposal, including now in the European Parliament. fossilfueltreaty.org/vanuatu
