🧵#Exclusive#Scoop 1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."
2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.
She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.
3/ We contacted former District Attorney Chesa Boudin to get his response to Jenkins' criticism of his office.
I reached him by phone.
He answered.
I identified myself.
Then, Boudin hung up.
4/ We also spoke to Jenkins about criticism over her integrity. She said she "volunteered" for recall campaign against Boudin, but 1 day after Mayor named Jenkins as Boudin's replacement, Jenkins disclosed she was a paid consultant ($100,000+) for a group w/close ties to recall.
5/ Filings show the nonprofit that paid Jenkins, "NEIGHBORS FOR A BETTER SAN FRANCISCO," is registered to the exact same address as the similarly named group, "NEIGHBORS FOR A BETTER SAN FRANCISCO ADVOCACY COMMITTEE," which funded the recall campaign against Chesa Boudin.
6/ We asked Jenkins about the recent revelation that just days before quitting DA's office & joining recall effort, she sent sensitive criminal files to the personal email of a fellow prosecutor, who was also about to quit & join recall.
"I did nothing illegal or improper."
7/ The brutal attack on Paul Pelosi, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, has garnered tons of conspiracy theories, so we asked Jenkins to shed light on what actually happened, including why Paul Pelosi didn't run out of his home after he was able to open the door for police.
8/ While Jenkins admits systemic change won't be swift, she believes San Franciscans are now demanding a DA who can enact progressive policies to *both* reform a broken criminal justice system *and* incorporate accountability for those convicted of crimes. @nbcbayarea
9/ Jenkins maintains the lead in her race to remain SF's top prosecutor, however, 100,000+ ballots still need to be tallied in SF (about 40% of the total votes cast).
Jenkins, convinced ranked-choice voting will ultimately give her a majority, has already claimed victory.

#BREAKING 🧵 1/ San Francisco District Attorney @BrookeJenkinsSF releases new details about attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi.
She says David Depape broke a glass door to get into the Pelosi's SF home, went to 2nd floor to find Paul Pelosi sleeping in bed.
2/ Charges against Depape include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault w/ a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder as well as threats to a public official and their family.
DA says Depape woke up Paul Pelosi and wanted to know where his wife was.
3/ Mr. Pelosi was wearing a "loose-fitting pajama shirt & boxer shorts" when he was forced to get out of bed. He tried to access a phone in his home elevator, but Depape is accused of blocking him. Later, Pelosi asked to use bathroom and was able to call 911 with his cell phone.
1/ California's Supt. of Education @TonyThurmond took swift action after our investigation exposed how few schools are equipped to reverse deadly drug overdoses on campus.
Teen overdose deaths in California recently spiked to a nation-wide high.
2/ An overdose antidote, known as Narcan/naloxone, can bring people back to life. It's a nasal spray & the CA legislature first gave schools the power to use it on students 6 years ago. The state even offers Narcan kits for free, but we learned few schools have them on campus.
3/ We surveyed 10 largest school districts in #SanFrancisco Bay Area, home to nearly 500 schools and 320,000 students.
We learned:
- students have suffered overdoses at at least 40% of those school districts
- only 3% high schools have Narcan on campus; 0 middle & elem. schools.
🧵 Kate Chatfield, the Chief of Staff for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, is now blocking credentialed journalists on Twitter.
She has used the social media platform in her capacity as a government official, so it’s unclear what she doesn’t want reporters to see. 1/
Just a few weeks ago, the DA’s office hired a “transparency lawyer” to combat criticism over a perceived lack of transparency. Kate Chatfield herself praised the move, telling SF Standard it “reflects our continued commitment to transparency.”
Now she’s blocking reporters?🤔 2/
When public servants agree to take on the responsibility of doing the people’s work – there must be transparency.
Sure, it’s not convenient nor is it self-serving, but it’s necessary. You deserve it.
After all, it’s your tax dollars paying the salaries of these officials.

3) San Francisco Police Sgt. Matt Parra says DA’s Office is too lenient on criminals.
He heads a team of undercover cops tasked w/ tackling car-break-ins in SF’s hardest hit areas. He says 1 out of 2 people his team arrests is someone they’ve recently arrested for similar crimes.
After spending months denying any wrongdoing, a police officer in California now admits he was part of a conspiracy to steal drugs/cash from drivers during traffic stops on HWY 101.
This story has plenty of Hollywood-like plot lines & a tangled web of victims, so check out our website to find digital extras that make it easy to follow who is accused of doing what.

2) Before San Francisco prosecutor Brooke Jenkins quit last week, she regularly took on the city's most violent offenders.

"What he has proven is that his approach is much more radical."

3) Prosecutor Don du Bain says he considers District Attorney Chesa Boudin a friend, but strongly believes he needs to be recalled.
"I've seen decisions made in this office ... since Chesa took over, that shocked my conscience, and I've been a prosecutor for 30 years."
