Today I visited the National Covid Memorial Wall in London. It conveys the enormous scale of the human loss. Each heart on the wall, which stretches for 1/3 of a mile, represents one of the more than 200,000 people who have died of #COVID19 in the UK. #pandemic 1/
Thousands of the hearts include the handwritten names of the deceased, with profoundly moving expressions of the grief felt by their bereaved families. The wall is the record of an immense human tragedy, 2/
But it is also a record of a monstrous crime against humanity. Across from the wall, separated by the River Thames, looms the Houses of Parliament. There sit the politicians who implemented the disastrous herd immunity policies responsible for horrifying loss of life. 3/
Were a similar memorial to Covid deaths erected in the United States, the inclusion of hearts for the 1.2 million victim would require a wall that extended for at least two miles. 4/4

The campaign to force the cancellation of @rogerwaters' upcoming German concerts is escalating. The latest vicious denunciation of the artist comes from Jürgen Kaube of the Frankfurter Allegemeine. The journalist's denunciation of Waters as anti-Semitic is not only a lie. 1/
It is also utterly cynical. Kaube has been a vociferous defender of German academia's most prominent apologist for Adolf Hitler, Professor Jörg Baberowski of Humboldt University. In a 2014 interview with the Spiegel magazine, Baberowski declared: 2/
“Hitler was no psychopath, and he wasn’t vicious. He didn’t want people to talk about the extermination of the Jews at his table.” At the time, Kaube did not call for Baberowski's removal from Humboldt University. Just the opposite. 3/
Exactly 100 years ago, on October 20, 1922, #Trotsky delivered one of his great political speeches before the membership of the Moscow organization of the Russian Communist Party. It was an extraordinary analysis of the challenges confronting the new Communist International. 1/
Trotsky examined the contradictory development of the world socialist revolution, which had achieved its first great victory in backward Russia rather than in the advanced centers of world imperialism. 2/ #socialism
He noted a basic difference in the revolutionary process in Russia, compared to that in an advanced country such as the United States. In the former, the great problem was not the seizure of power, but in holding it in the aftermath of the overthrow of the capitalist state. 3/
That a federal jury in Manhattan needed only 90 minutes to rule in actor #KevinSpacey's favor exposes the non-existence of credible evidence supporting accuser Anthony Rapp's claim that he was sexually assaulted by Spacey 36 years ago. 1/
But Rapp's claims, first made in 2017 in the early days of the rapidly escalating #MeToo witch-hunt, were sufficient to destroy the career of one of the greatest contemporary American actors. The media, led by the #NYTimes, treated untested accusations as proof of guilt. 2/
Spacey's career was brought to an immediate end. He was removed from "House of Cards" and fired from his starring role in "All the Money in the World." The outcome of the trial has vindicated the principled stand taken by the WSWS against the witch-hunt. 3/
Entering the new week, the #UkraineRussiaWar️ is escalating relentlessly. The @NYTimes reports explosions in the Russian region of Belgorod, well north of the Ukraine border. The city of Belgorod is an 8.5 hour drive from Moscow. US-NATO is extending the war into Russia. 1/
Both NATO and Russia are holding nuclear exercises. The NATO exercise, #steadfastnoon, starts Monday, involving 14 countries and 60 aircraft, including US B-52 bombers from Minot Air Base in North Dakota. The flights will be over Belgium, Britain and the North Sea. 2/
NATO describes the exercises as "routine," as if there could be anything routine about a nuclear exercise in the midst of a war that could lead, according to President Biden, to a nuclear #armagedon. In the meantime, Russia is going ahead with its "Grom" nuclear drill. 3/
Is there any limit to the wretchedness of the #NYTimes? Each day brings new evidence that no such limit exists. The latest specimen is David Brooks' column, "The Triumph of the Ukrainian Idea." It glorifies rightwing Ukrainian nationalism as the liberal ideal. 1/
Brooks' hero, Volodymyr Zelensky, "is fighting not just for democracy but also for Ukraine - Ukrainian culture, Ukrainian land, the Ukrainian people and tongue. The symbol of this war is the Ukrainian flag, a nationalist symbol." Brooks is wallowing in the rhetoric of fascism. 2/
But it is not just a matter of rhetoric.Brooks argues that liberalism, if it is to survive, must embrace nationalist mythology. He writes that national unity cannot be maintained on the basis of reason: 3/
The @nytimes reports that President Biden told a group of billionaires at a fundraising event last night:“We have not faced the prospect of #Armageddon since Kennedy and the #CubanMissileCrisis.” #nuclearwar 1/
Biden continued: “We are trying to figure out: What is Putin’s off ramp? Where does he find a way out? Where does he find himself where he does not only lose face but significant power?” These are questions that Biden should ask himself. 2/
Having instigated the US-NATO proxy war, provided #Ukraine with unlimited weapons and money, pledged the reconquest of Crimea, and called for regime change in Russia, what is Biden's "off ramp"? How can he deescalate "where he does not only lose face but significant power?” 3/
