You may have seen that @grantshapps (the man who toyed with putting number-plates on bicycles and is shortest serving Home Secretary in history) said we are "misguided".
"It’s hard to think of a government more misguided than the one that Grant Shapps is currently a member of, unless of course it’s the last one. The one that lasted weeks, that crashed the economy and put up bills for millions of already struggling families.
Shapps is now serving as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, but when he was housing minister and transport minister – the massive carbon emissions, the harm from these sectors did not reduce. Shapps has been in and out of Government for 12 years.
How much time does he want to transition? He allowed politics to fail & has left those who care with no choice but to work to defend all they love and cherish. Everything the government says about protecting us from climate disaster is undermined by investing in new fossil fuel.
Now, instead of stepping up, they are imprisoning ordinary people who are calling them out, stamping down on rights and freedoms. We will face pain and suffering across the UK as a result of collapsing food systems, and it’s already starting.
Last week saw was the hottest Armistice Day in history. Our native landscapes rely on predictable seasons to function — continued heating will see crops fail.
There is now no credible pathway to staying below 1.5C, this happened on his watch. Along with crop failure and starvation we face nothing less than the collapse of ordered society and with it will go all our rights and freedoms, our culture and traditions.
The disruption faced by the country is not the fault of the police, who are the realists in this conversation. As Chief Inspector Chris Noble recognised: “we’re not going to be able to arrest our way out of environmental protest”.
If Shapps is serious about facing up to his responsibilities, to doing his duty, he must end new oil and gas and end the disruption. To refuse to take this simple step is to condemn us all. It is an act of betrayal, of this country and all our children."
🚨 Hunger striking Just Stop Oil supporter remains in hospital wing:
🏥 A Just Stop Oil supporter who went on hunger strike to demand that the Govt end new oil & gas has been unexpectedly moved to the hospital wing as prison staff became increasingly concerned for their health.
🛣 Tez Burns (they/them), a 34-year-old bicycle mechanic from Swansea, was remanded to Bronzefield prison on Friday 11 November after being arrested for taking part in the actions to disrupt the #M25 motorway by climbing on the overhead gantries.
Louis McKechnie was imprisoned awaiting trial on July 5th for taking non-violent action in support of Just Stop Oil. His case is expected to be heard in February 2023.
"Sitting in HMP Peterborough on my 22nd birthday, I’d like to reflect on the year gone by. On my last birthday I was sent to HMP Thameside for my role in the Insulate Britain campaign. A lot has changed since then: the cost of living crisis and climate crisis have gotten worse...
...and government inaction is costing more lives by the day. More citizens than I can count have been imprisoned for resisting these “leaders” and COP27 has somehow achieved even less than COP26 last year.
From today, Just Stop Oil will halt its campaign of civil resistance on the M25. We are giving time to those in Government who are in touch with reality to consider their responsibilities to this country at this time. (1/6)
We ask that the Prime Minister consider his statement at COP27, where he spoke of the catastrophic threat posed by the ravages of global heating, the 33 million people displaced by floods in Pakistan, and the moral and economic imperative to honour our pledges. (2/6)
🛣 BREAKING: M25 BLOCKED FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE DAY 🛣
🚧 From 6:30 this morning, supporters of Just Stop Oil climbed onto the overhead gantries of the M25 at multiple locations, demanding that the Govt immediately end all new oil and gas.
“I understand people must be frustrated with us, and rightly so, but we have to disrupt daily life because we are hurtling towards climate catastrophe, yet the Government continues to betray me, my generation and people in the Global South by issuing new oil licenses.”
Sam Holland, 20, said of the government's plan to license more oil:
💬 "I'm getting screwed over. I'm twenty years old. What does my future look like when I'm forty? It looks like there's no food on the shelves. It looks like people fighting in the streets."
“I’m doing this for my baby nephew and his unborn sister. I want them to have a chance at a future. The government is responsible for criminal inaction on the climate crisis. They should be in prison."
🧯 At 8:30am today, 6 Just Stop Oil supporters sprayed orange paint from fire extinguishers onto the Home Office, the MI5 building, the Bank of England and the headquarters of News Corp at London Bridge.
🛢 They are demanding that the Government halts all new oil and gas consents and licences.
🏛 The buildings were chosen to represent the four pillars that support and maintain the power of the fossil fuel economy — government, security, finance and media.
📣 A Just Stop Oil spokesperson said:
“We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed, while vulnerable people go hungry and fossil fuel companies and the rich profit from our misery.
