THREAD. (1) We need a debate on how to design stimulus packages to boost economic recovery that doesn't contradict Paris #climate goals but supports them. This thread tries to capture this debate and create a reading list for those interested in it.
(2) I will post articles both in German and English, try to cover many debates in different countries and update the list regularly. Please feel free to DM me to share articles & complement this list!
(3) As we move from debating principles to specific ideas, I hope sharing examples of good (and bad) practice will inform debates in different countries. If you have technical advice/ suggestions, please DM me.

We often hear it said, in certain circles, that the current #COVIDー19 crisis would be "good for the climate and the environment," or that we ought "to apply the same measures against climate change." Here is why I think this is wrong. 1/..
Not only is this utterly insensitive to the ordeal many families are living through right now, not to mention the staff on the front line, but it's also completely wrong and stupid. On the contrary, I think that in the long run this crisis will be a disaster for the #climate. 2/
Of course there are short-term effects on the environment: a substantial drop in air pollution, a fall in greenhouse gas emissions, etc. But in the long term, these temporary effects will probably be insignificant, and here's why: 3/..

Tonight I'm going to share highlights from the 2010 "Scenarios for the Future of Technology & Int'l Development" report produced by The Rockefeller Foundation & Global Business Network. Not just the "Lock Step" scenario, but all 4 scenarios. [54 page report]
Following Event 201 (Oct 18 2019), we must concede that the ruling class has been gifted with phenomenal and prophetic intuitions & insights. (They truly are the chosen ones.) Thus it is worthwhile, even mandatory, to study their scenario exercises & simulations.
"We believe that scenario planning has great potential for use in philanthropy to identify unique interventions... scenario planning allows us to achieve impact more effectively." [p 4]

The collapse in oil prices isn't likely to be a big problem for the global #climate -- but the attempt to recover from an economic crisis might. Some notes on my column today: #OOTT…
The economics 101 view of falling oil prices is that it will inevitably mean stronger demand for crude, which will probably be bad news for alternatives -- principally, electric vehicles.

But you really need to get past economics 101 to see what's going on here!
After all, oil prices have very little to do with the attractiveness of electric vehicles.

For one thing, taxes and producer profits mean that the crude price is less than half of the pump price of motor fuel, as @harrybenham_1 points out:

#Biden was 1st to introduce a #ClimateChange bill. His 1986 Global Climate Protection Act died in committee, but Reagan signed a version of into law when Biden successfully attached it as an amendment to a State Dept funding bill. /thread…
#Biden, introducing his #GlobalWarming bill in Jan 1987: "Life on this planet exists only under highly specialized circumstances" & "even a small rise in temperature could disrupt the entire complicated environment that has nurtured life as we know it." @PolitiFact
In 1/87 Senate speech, #Biden said #ClimateChange was a bigger threat than the USSR: Reagan told Gorbachev "‘that if we had an invasion from Mars, both sides would put aside our differences.’ While not an exterrestrial threat, global warming could prove no less dangerous."

In the midst of a busy news cycle, this development might get lost. But it could be a big deal for our no fossil fuels future: In Canada, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway just decided against investing $3bn in a $6.7bn liquified natural gas export terminal near Quebec

Why did Buffett say no?

"projects like this faced intense backlash from citizens and politicians" and "few North American LNG projects expected to proceed to financing amid [..] pullback from equity investors"

Translation: Investors get #strandedasset risk of natural gas

Note that this comes 4 months after the European Investment Bank, largest multi-lateral bank globally, announced it will stop lending for ALL fossil fuels, including natural gas

Tonight on @abc730 @leighsales asked some serious questions of Scott Morrison on #climatechange. However, there are some additional questions it would have been great if she'd asked...

#auspol #ClimateCrisis
@abc730 @leighsales 1. You talk about not wanting anyone to lose their job - what about the thousands of people who are losing their job in the #renewables industry right now due to the lack of policy certainty and the lack of a plan to decarbonise our electricity sector? Do their jobs not count?
@abc730 @leighsales 2. Scientists say that your current plan to cut emissions by 2030 will lead to warming of more than 3 degrees - much higher than the Paris targets - what is the cost of more than 3degrees of warming to the Australian economy?

This WashPost story on how we've enlisted 19-year-old German YouTube Personality @NaomiSeibtt to communicate #climaterealism is better than most in the legacy media. They were actually fair to her and us. 1/…
@NaomiSeibtt In contrast to “TIME Person of the Year” @GretaThunberg, who told world leaders at Davos, “I want you to panic,” Naomi told The Post, “I don’t want you to panic. I want you to think.” That's apparently a controversial statement, judging from reaction of #climate alarmists. 2/

"The Green New Deal" is going to take movement tactics. Bullshit. It's global - sitting in the wings. Your consent is being engineered. Spending billions to have you demand & "fight" for it. They play with you like a cat plays with a mouse before it decapitates it. For fun.
Who else is tasked with building the social license required to implement the Global Green New Deal?

Let's start with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, & May Boeve, Executive Director of 350-DOT-org.

The Arctic Se Ice extent is now only 2.4% below the 1979-2019 average for January. That's well within 1 SD.

With the #UKCoordinationGroup & #EPlenary about to adopt a resolution on the EU-UK future relationship, here are some elements which would be of great help to integrated supply chains & logistics on both sides of the border @davidmcallister @berndlange @CHansenEU @EP_Trade 1/
1. 1st, a #transport agreement is an absolute must @davidmcallister @berndlange @CHansenEU @KarimaDelli : without an agreement, there is no fallback to allow traffic by road, rail & air freight to continue. Without it, planes won't fly & a very small number of EU & UK vehicles 2/
(trucks & vans) cld ever cross the border relying on a very limited number of ECMT permits (wouldn't even cover 5% of the traffic). The situation is just as serious for the island of Ireland since #transport is not dealt with in the Protocol part of the withdrawal agreement 3/

If you’ve been watching my twitter stream recently, you may have noticed this but today’s a good day to be explicit: As someone who’s worked on the #climate crisis at the international, national and local levels for 15 years, I’m proud to be a climate leader #WithWarren. (🧵)
I spend my life fighting for climate justice and I’m absolutely convinced that a President @ewarren would work tirelessly to bring the big, structural change we need to address this climate crisis. Here are a few of the many reasons why I’m proud to be #WithWarren:
.@ewarren understands that corruption lies at the center the climate crisis. That’s why she was the first declared Presidential candidate to sign the #NoFossilFuelMoney pledge and is ready to stand up to the out-of-control fossil fuel industry.

🚜🌎💚 Land use, #farming & how this impacts on #ClimateChange is under scrutiny

Today, the Committee on Climate Change (@thecccuk) have launched their new Land Use report

What does it say, does it focus on the right things and is it ambitious enough?
@theCCCuk @UKSustain @SoilsAlliance @SusFoodTrust @LandworkersUK @FOLUCoalition @GreenerUK_ @GreenAllianceUK @WCL_News @DefraGovUK @NFUtweets The report comes at a time when #farming, #landuse and its impact on #climatechange is under the spotlight like never before.

This @theCCCuk report will be a major influence on what farmers will be rewarded for doing to adapt to climate change.
Nature must be given equal emphasis in shaping the future of post-#Brexit #farm support, as #farming and #landuse is also the primary driver of global #insect decline and the #biodiversity crash.

This is going to be a very important thread.

#SavingCapitalism with

Let's start here, with this misleading article shared by the GT account.
To start. From the article:

"The theme of this year’s gathering in #Davos is “#stakeholders for a cohesive and sustainable world”. According to the forum’s website, leaders will meet to discuss ideas and improve our global progress on climate change."…
What is not shared is the primary focus:

"Focus of the meeting will be on renewing the concept of stakeholder #capitalism to overcome income inequality, societal division and the #climate crisis."

This #WEF release is new (Jan 14 2020) - but the focus & theme is not.

How To Train Interpretable Neural Networks That Accurately Extrapolate From Small Data. Today we released a new paper that showcases how to do just that using Scientific Machine Learning (#sciml) techniques to encode non-data scientific information.…
Our approach builds upon the work of @DavidDuvenaud but identifies that the differential equations one works with does not have to be a blackbox, but instead can utilize all of the available scientific models to encode as much prior information as possible.
@DavidDuvenaud This is a structure that we call the Universal Differential Equation: a differential equation with embedded universal approximators. Sometimes neural networks, sometimes Chebyshev polynomials, for us it really doesn't matter because they are small approximators.

As #Australia reels from unprecedented bushfires, the disconnect between its vulnerability to #climate change and the inadequacy of its government's response is coming under international scrutiny.
We have produced a mountain of research on this -
👇👇 thread👇👇
1/ #Australia is on fire due in large part to #climate change yet the government is looking for ways to weaken the Paris Agreement by using 40 y. o. Kyoto protocol credits to meet its 2030 targets. We show there's no legal basis for this @TheAusInstitute
2/ Our calculations show just how bad using Kyoto carryover units to meet #ParisAgreement commitments would be for #climate action: an extra 0.1˚C of warming that wld not otherwise hv occurred due to delays in energy & economic system transformation
