We are LIVE for today’s webinar with our Exec. Director @RDNS_TAI and senior climate and energy researcher @pollyjhemming talking dodgy carbon credits with @ebony_bennett #auspol

There’s still time to join us – register here: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regist…
Are Australia's emmissions reducing? @RDNS_TAI responds with a flat "no." @pollyjhemming reminds viewers that Australia's actual emissions have only gone down 1.8% relative 2005. #climate #auspol Image
What is green Wall St.?🤨Polly Hemming says that despite the release of the State of the Environment which showed that Australia's ecosystems are collapsing, the govt. has refused to regulate polluting industries. Instead, they leave it to the markets to find a solution. #auspol
This "nature based solution" operates on the assumption that nature is investible, says @RDNS_TAI For instance, Santos can go on increasing emissions so long as they offset it by paying the "market value" of koalas or trees or nature #auspol #environment #climate Image
What is a carbon credit? @pollyjhemming explains it's meant to represent a reduction in emissions that an entity can claim if they plant more trees/capture landfill gas etc. These can then be sold to industrial polluters to cancel out their emissions, which is the problem #auspol Image
The evidence is that carbon credits aren't reducing emissions. At best, offsets help maintain the level of environmental decline, not actively reduce it says @pollyjhemming. We must use legislation to directly put a stop to polluting projects says @RDNS_TAI #auspol #climate Image
Next year, the govt. is set to introduce a new safeguard mechanism. @RDNS_TAI reminds viewers that this instrument would mean that it is fine for new oil nad gas to open, as long as there are also new offsets. #AusPol2022 #climate #environment Image
The more time we spend talking about carbon credits, the less time that leaves for reducing actual levels of emissions, says @RDNS_TAI #auspol #greenwashing #climate
And that’s a wrap - thanks for joining us! Fantastic to have @RDNS_TAI and @pollyjhemming on our webinar with @ebony_bennett.

We’ll post the full recording soon – and remember, you can sign up for our upcoming webinars here: nb.tai.org.au/webinar_series

While the Stage 3 tax cuts are in the spotlight, here's 18 reasons why they should be redesigned 🧵 #auspol

1/ There are much fairer (and cheaper) ways to give people a tax cut

Here are four alternatives, each delivering a bigger slice of the pie to 80% of taxpayers.
2/ They will make inflation worse

Handing out a quarter of a trillion in tax cuts to high income earners, during a time of already high inflation, is only going to make inflation worse, and hurt those on lower incomes more. #auspol
3/  The RBA will keep interest rates higher for longer, making mortgages even more expensive

Because the RBA is focused on reducing inflation, the inflationary Stage 3 tax cuts mean they will will keep interest rates higher for longer. #auspol

Saying the quiet part out loud...🙃

When the opposition wouldn't cooperate with the government attempting to ram through their favour for Santos - the Sea Dumping Bill - this happened:

"You said no to Santos."
"You said no to Woodside. "
"You said no Inpex."
#auspol
Our research shows that this Bill appears primarily aimed at facilitating the Santos Barossa Project, its related Bayu-Undan CCS project and other fossil fuel projects off Australia’s northern shores.

CCS is a technology that has failed for decades.

australiainstitute.org.au/report/submiss…
"The bill allows companies to export their carbon dioxide outside of Australian waters and dump it in international seas. There is a single company for which this is relevant."

Here's 17 reasons why the Stage 3 tax cuts should be scrapped 🧵

1/ FACT: the Stage 3 tax cuts are massively expensive and massively unfair

They will cost $313 billion over a decade, of which $157.5 billion will go to those earning more than $180,000 per year. #auspol
2/ Every dollar of the Stage 3 tax cuts to the wealthy ($313 billion), is a dollar not spent on government services that are crying out for funds like Aged Care and Medicare, or increasing the rate of Jobseeker above the poverty line. #auspol Image
3/ They will give bankers, surgeons, and MPs an extra $9075 a year, while hospo workers get nothing.

Australia is in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, and the Stage 3 tax cuts will deliver 0 for those struggling to make ends meet on the minimum wage or low incomes. #auspol Image
