Violence against women & girls is the most pervasive human rights violation worldwide.

More than 5 women/girls are killed by family EVERY HOUR.

Tomorrow is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, & is the start of the 16 Days of Activism.

#IDEVAW2022
While women can indeed be agents of patriarchy, and participate in this violence, the vast, vast majority of violence against women is perpetrated by men. This is why many feminists insist on calling it “MVAWG”: male violence against women and girls. macleans.ca/opinion/lets-f…
“Violence against women” sounds like a passive phenomenon that happens out of the aether. Even worse, “gender-based violence” doesn’t even name the group affected—women. “Male violence against women and girls” names the problem and those affected.
“Using the active voice is critical, says Sheehy. It requires replacing, ‘She was assaulted. She suffered a broken bone,’ with the more specific, ‘He broke her forearm by smashing it with a hammer.’”

The latter is so, so much more visceral, and it’s the reality.
That we gloss over the reality of male violence is a testament to how prevalent it is. 93% of sex offenders are men and 90% of rape victims are women. It doesn’t get much clearer than that—this is a pattern of male violence against women.
Please keep the 16 days of activism on your radar. It could be really, really fruitful, as well, if you committed to whatever actions you can for these 16 days. It could be a small action every day, or Some ideas are in the following tweets.
Ideas for the #16Days #16DaysOfActivism:

—Tell someone in your life about the stats in this thread every day
—Post a different MVAWG statistic every day so social media
—Call your political representatives regarding women’s issues, whether local or global
—Donate if you’re able, volunteer if you’re able. It doesn’t have to be money: clothes, food, etc would likely be highly appreciated at a local women’s shelter.
—Support women-owned businesses in your area
—Read one article of women’s news every day (and tell someone about it)
—Gender affects us from birth. Women are meant to be feminine, quiet, compliant, apologetic. We're meant to adhere to beauty standards. Forego something gendered to see the affect it has on your life—shaving, makeup, nail polish, or apologies, for example. Share your experience.
—Make it a point to point out misogynistic jokes and language. Maybe even commit to not using slurs like b*tch, sl*t, wh*re, and tell people why you’ve chosen to do so.
—Learn about coercive control, how to spot it, and what to do next. domesticshelters.org/articles/ident…
—Read a book about women, nonfic or fic. Hidden Figures, We Should All Be Feminists, Right Wing Women, The Creation of Patriarchy. Recommend “Why Does He Do That?” to every woman who may be in an abusive situation. Reply to SPECIFICALLY this tweet if you have book suggestions!
—Watch movies from this list with friends/family/uni/work to generate conversations around domestic violence and raise awareness. (This list is far from perfect but I personally highly recommend the Colour Purple or the Millennium Trilogy) pinterest.com/nnedv/movies-w…
—Learn how to spot abuse: unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/…
The ideas are endless--please share yours below as well! And thank you for reading this thread, please share it and raise awareness of IDEVAW, and if you do choose to do one or more of these ideas, I’d love to know, it would mean a lot to me.

A misogynist with a quarter of a million followers is back to spread hate. HATE. Not a simple difference of opinion.

He tweeted that he “wouldn’t even r*pe” Jess Phillips. Don’t pretend that falls under “free speech,” most of us would have reported the shit out of that tweet.
Too many women who say they are for women’s rights are, in my opinion, not seeing the forest for the trees here, because they are so, so single issue. It isn’t enough to be able to say what a woman is when rank, abject, and PROUD misogynists are regaining huge platforms.
And no, this isn’t the “cost of free speech.” Saying you “wouldn’t even r*pe her” doesn’t fall under free speech, it’s hate speech. In the same way that bodily autonomy doesn’t include my right for my fist to move in the direction of someone’s face.

The Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has warned incel rhetoric is getting more violent. We know all too well from recent events that violent rhetoric inspires violent acts. Incel forum posts about mass murder rose by 59%, and there is a r*pe post EVERY HALF HOUR. 🧶
“It's in keeping with a broader escalation in violent rhetoric we've seen from groups on social media, whether linked to conspiracies or far-right ideologies. More specifically, it seems to fit into a wider pattern of increasing anti-women hate online.”
Nowhere is the link between violent rhetoric and violent acts clearer than in incel forums. Elliot Rodger famously spoke of a “War on Women.” A number of mass shooters are known to have browsed incel forums or repeated incel rhetoric.

You know what I think about a lot? This moment from @jk_rowling’s essay: “We are living through the most misogynistic period I’ve experienced.” It was the first time I’d seen anyone with a huge audience say, hey, regress for women isn’t just possible, but happening right now. 🧵 Image
We are gaslit by society, in a way. There’s this desire to see the status of women as a steady upwards climb towards progress and liberation. But that’s really not the case, as the last few years have shown, across the world.
From Afghanistan, where women have lost every right they gained in the last twenty years, to America, where women have lost their right to abortion, regress for women is real, and it’s happening before our eyes.

Feminism seeks to liberate women as a sex class, and therefore benefits all women—even those who are against it.

Some women will work against feminism, as a part of patriarchy, because that is what patriarchy does—socialise, brainwash, manipulate.
Feminism benefits all women. All women are included as the subjects of its struggle.

That however *doesn’t* mean that anti-feminist women are being unfairly excluded if their anti feminist views are criticised or examined.
That isn’t unnecessary gatekeeping. That is preserving the meaning of feminism.

While there are debates about the definition of feminism, that doesn’t mean feminism can mean *anything.* There are hard lines and consistencies across feminism. (For example, pro-abortion.)

This thread is incredible. And by incredible, I mean a shocking perversion of feminism and the #MeToo movement. It seems the spike in male violence against women is because…women aren’t having enough sex with them. How DARE we?? 🧵 ImageImage
Apparently these poor, poor men have had NO CHOICE but to become violent, because they’re simply not getting enough sex! The rise in male violence against women has got nothing to do with porn culture, or growing misogyny, or the hyper-sexualisation of women in media, amirite? Image
Look what you’re doing to the men, ladies. You’re basically causing SUFFERING in every man you rebuff. You are all soooo cruel. Image

Look, it is important and revealing to critique beauty standards and examine one’s own participation in them. It is freeing to challenge them in your own life and model it for other women. But… 🧵
I’ve been noticing a disproportionate emphasis on personal, individual beauty choices, especially as a marker of how “feminist” you are. This is itself a symptom of the very same hyperindividualism that second wave feminism is meant to be *against.*
At the heart of feminism is class solidarity. Women as a sex class, oppressed because of sexual difference, men trying to control the means of reproduction via social and cultural and economic control. It is women standing together.
