🚨1. Powerful open letters, ahead of the #ASP21, sent by 198 Palestinain, regional and international civil society organisations to the @IntlCrimCourt's Prosecutor @KarimKhanQC and the #ICC Assembly of States Parties President, @PASPFernandez🧵
2. Both letters called on them to condemn Israel's brazen designations of the 6 renowned Palestinian civil society organisations as "terrorists" and its raids of their offices which amounts to “tampering with or interfering with the collection of evidence.”
3. The letter to Prosecutor highlighted last year's significant missed opportunities to issue statements on the situation in Palestine, citing his office's policy paper providing for deterrent preventive statements that allow his Office to"react promptly to upsurges of violence."
The letter to the Prosecutor also called on him to visit the occupied Palestinain territory &to consider opening an office there. It also called on him to expedite his investigation into the situation in Palestine including the crimes against humanity of #apartheid & persecution.
4. The letter to the ASP President highlighted that last year, Palestinian organisations delivered a statement during the #ASP20 calling for condemnation of Israel's brazen designations, and warning of further repressive steps by #IsraeliApartheid.
5. The letter stressed that the right of participation of observer states in the #ASP21 "promotes a key goal of universality", but should also be understood as carrying with it "responsibilities to act in a manner that respects the [@IntlCrimCourt's] mandate."
6. It further noted that last year, Israel attended the #ASP20 as an observer state, despite its efforts to undermine the work of the #ICC and despite its brazen attacks on Palestinain civil society organisations cooperating with the @IntlCrimCourt.
7. The letter to the ASP President further underscored that "Israel’s unsubstantiated & unlawful designations of Palestinian CSOs, apparently at least in part due to their advocacy for justice before the court, is not compatible with support to the ICC’s mission."
8. The letter to ASP President also called on her to implement her proposal on R.169 of the IER, which entails that the Presidency “bears the main responsibility for coordinating an appropriate response[..]to any threat or attack against the Court [..]& those cooperating with it"
9. The letter also reminded the ASP president that "when the Court and its staff were threatened & sanctioned, by the Trump administration," the undersigned organisations, along CSOs and HRDs around the world, stood up for the #ICC and called for the sanctions to be rescinded."
"We, members of Palestinian civil society and the Palestinian people, don't respect Israeli military orders, will not abide by them, & we will continue with our struggle toward dignity, freedom & self-determination"
- @SJabaren, General Director @alhaq_org thenation.com/article/world/…
"[These raids, closures, and threats of imprisonment] are the result of the one year of inaction by the international community, which has not challenged Israel enough to rescind the designations."
- @SJabaren, General Director @alhaq_org #StandWithThe6
"For the Palestinian people, this international inaction is all too familiar after seven long decades of Israeli impunity and apartheid [..] With massive support, received from our partners and friends around the globe, we continue to operate, and we take pride in our work."
Similarly, on 30 March 2022, The Human Rights Committee expressed its deep concerns about Israel's discriminatory laws, policies & practices, including structural discrimination & racial segregation.
Also, on 21 March 2022, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the OPT, Prof. @MichaelLynk5 concluded that Israel is committing the crimes against humanity of apartheid against the Palestinians.
🚨 BREAKING: Apartheid and de facto annexation in practice
1. Israel changes its policy of entry and residence of foreigners into the West Bank to further complicates entry restrictions. Even among foreign nationality holders, Israel racially discriminates against Palestinians🧵
2. The new 97- page ordinance entitled: "Procedure for Entry and Residence for Foreigners in Judea and Samaria Area" replaces the current 4-page Ordinance No. 202, entitled: "Policy of Entry of Foreigners into the West Bank Territories", and will become effective on 22 May 2022.
3. The new, more expansive entry rules represent a clear attempt to restrict, track and trace the travel of foreign nationals to the occupied Palestinian territories, control Palestinian population growth & keep data on the land claims of Palestinians holding foreign nationality.
🚨 BREAKING: The Human Rights Committee issues its concluding observation on Israel's 5th periodic report, expressing its deep concerns about Israel's discriminatory laws, policies & practices, including structural discrimination & racial segregation, i.e., APARTHIED.
THREAD 🧵
1. Although the Committee didn't explicitly mention Aparthied, everything in its report did. For example, it reiterated the 2020 recommendations of the Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination. I will provide some highlights here but make sure to read the 11-page doc.
2. The Committee reaffirmed the applicability of the ICCPR on the OPT including in situations of occupation. It further called on Israel to interpret the ICCPR in "good faith" and to review its legal position of non-applicability.
