Here you go, the explanation of Antoine Griezmann's VAR-disallowed goal for offside.

It's a harsh decision and comes down to a complex and highly subjective area of offside: namely, what is a "deliberate play"?

In law, it's not as simple as it sounds.

espn.com/soccer/fifa-wo…
This is an IFAB example of a "deliberate play" header = no offside.

It's similar to Montassar Talbi's, but with more control over the direction. Shows how complex it is.

But Antoine Griezmann's goal probably shouldn't have been disallowed through VAR. #TUNFRA #FIFAWorldCup
Compare it to this, a header which ISN'T a "deliberate play."

The receiving Feyenoord player, according to the IFAB, is offside. The defender's header does not reset offside.

Fans may think they should be the other way around.

We have been due a really controversial one.
When these examples were released at the start of the season, I knew these videos were going to come in very useful sooner rather than later!

We need to clear up a few things on the disallowed Antoine Griezmann goal.

It's turned into quite the mess, with the French FA complaining the goal was disallowed after Tunisia kicked off (which isn't possible by VAR protocol).

So, do France have a case? #TUNFRA #FIFAWorldCup
This all boils down to whether the referee, Matthew Conger of New Zealand, gave Tunisia permission to kickoff.

Because Tunisia did kickoff, and Conger instantly blew the final whistle.

But if Conger hasn't signalled Tunisia to restart, it's meaningless.
I've received a much better video with clear evidence, so reposting the rest of the thread to reflect this.

GROUP C - ROUTE TO CHAOS

Poland lose, Mexico win; level on 4pts for 2nd

- If records are identical, eg:
Poland 0-2 Argentina
Saudi Arabia 0-2 Mexico

- Onto fair play:
Poland: -4
Mexico: -6

- If level, random draw

#POLARG #KSAMEX

FULL PERMUTATIONS: espn.co.uk/football/fifa-…
This scenario applies to any combination of results whereby both games are decided by the same two-goal scoreline.

So
Poland 1-3 Argentina
Saudi Arabia 1-3 Mexico

Poland 2-4 Argentina
Saudi Arabia 2-4 Mexico
If Poland lose and Saudi Arabia-Mexico is a draw, Poland and Saudi Arabia both have four points.

- If Poland lose by three goals it will be decided by group goals scored

- If records identical, e.g:
Poland 0-3 Argentina
Saudi Arabia 0-0 Mexico

= Poland second on head to head.

That is NOT a penalty and is literally in the IFAB directory of what ISN'T a penalty.

It can only be a penalty if it's a deliberate act.

This image is from the IFAB. Image
Slide 37 of the IFAB Laws of the Game presentation, when the handball law was last clarified in the summer of 2021 (it has NOT changed since).

Video example: theifab.com/law-changes/20… Image
To be absolutely, 100% crystal clear here.

The exemption is in the clarifications and guidance issued by the IFAB when the handball Law was amended last year.

You will NOT find this in the Laws text.

It is, very clearly, in the guidance on the interpretation of handball.

When a goal is disallowed by the VAR for offside because a defender hasn't made a "deliberate play" I get lots of tweets.

Think Nazinho for Sporting on Harry Kane's goal.
Or Fabinho / Ibrahima Konte on Karim Benzema's goal.

Well check out this example from the Bundesliga.
Bochum v Gladbach on Tuesday. In the 82nd minute, Ramy Bensebaini scores for the away side to make it 2-2.

It's disallowed by the VAR for offside against the corner taker, Jonas Hofmann, despite the ball being played by defender Vasilios Lampropoulos.
Gladbach's Marvin Friedrich had got his head to the corner, and when it dropped down Lampropoulos kicked it out of the area.

The ball fell back to Friedrich, who crossed for Bensebaini to score.

The VAR judged Lampropoulos didn't make a "deliberate play" despite clearing.

Manchester United failing to win their UEL group presents a bit of an issue for the Premier League, as there is now no natural space in the calendar to rearrange their games against Crystal Palace and Leeds United.

Every single weekend and midweek is already accounted for. #MUFC Image
Between now and the end of the season, Man United's empty midweeks are covered by possible FA Cup replays, Carabao Cup dates, European dates or empty midweeks already reserved for specified catch-up dates related to domestic cup competitions.

There's nowhere to slot them in.
Man United are the only team who cannot rearrange games in February and March.

The other 6 teams* in Europe can play in the two spare weeks - and catchup on the Premier League schedule delayed due to the death of the Queen.

*Caveat coming up!
