She was arrested by #Eritrean authorities a decade ago.
⚠️ When she was 15.
Ciham has not been seen or heard from since then. She has never been charged with any offense.
The Eritrean regime’s outrageous actions seem to be some kind of political revenge against her father. He was information minister in 2012 but fell out with the president and fled the country.
Shortly after, Ciham – a dual US-Eritrean citizen – was arrested trying to escape.
#Eritrea has one of the world’s most appalling human rights records, and Ciham’s case is just one example.
Eritrea's government imposes severe restrictions on the population, including on freedom of expression, opinion, and faith.
The government forcibly recruits much of its adult population into indefinite military service: hrw.org/report/2009/04…
There is clear evidence of thousands of migrant worker deaths in the lead-up to the #WorldCup. Authorities failed to conduct meaningful investigations into a large percentage of them, classifying many as unexplained or due to “natural causes.”
Respecting human rights is not just "something nice to do" or simply "the right thing to do."
It's also not just the legal thing to do.
It's essential for human security - locally, nationally & internationally.
Expecting governments to respect human rights - rather than letting leaders get away with their crimes, which only bolsters their power - will save you a lot of security-related troubles down the line.

Russia seems intent on making life untenable for as many civilians as possible.
The laws of war prohibit attacks on objects key to the survival of the civilian population and violence or threats, “the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population.”
Russian politicians, lawmakers, and other commentators on Russian state media widely applauded the prospect of Ukrainian civilians being left without heat and water in winter.
“Plastics,” says Mr McGuire to a bewildered Benjamin in the iconic scene from 1967's The Graduate, “There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it.”
We’ve had 55 years to think about it…
Now, we're living in the future: a plastics crisis with human rights impacts.
🧵
It is a human rights issue...
The production, use, and disposal of plastics have significant impacts we should all be concerned about as rights-minded individuals – and as rights-respecting governments.
⚠️ First, plastics contain toxic chemical additives, and these can pose significant threats to human health.
⚠️ Second, because most are made from fossil fuels, plastics are helping to drive the climate crisis, which in turn threatens human rights.
