War has taken a devastating toll in #Kherson and #Mykolaiv oblasts, #Ukraine. As more villages and towns are retaken and become accessible, @MSF teams go there to provide basic medical care to people. Read more on what we are seeing 🧵
People who stayed behind have endured months of fighting, fear and isolation.
“I don't sleep well, my hands are shaking. They shelled us so badly every day that it became a usual thing for us.”
- Luidmyla, resident of Ivanivka, #Kherson.
Homes, infrastructure and healthcare facilities across #Kherson were destroyed and pharmacies looted. A majority of patients we see are older persons who for a long time didn’t have access to the medicines they needed for conditions such as diabetes or hypertension
Ivan Khokhlov, ER doctor, works in #MSF mobile clinics:
“Several people who approached us had operated wounds. They were constantly in pain. They just needed pain killers, which they did not have access to.”
In #Snihurivka, #Mykolaiv region, a small group of nurses and doctors stayed behind during 9 months of Russian military control. They struggled to provide care to the residents without electricity and enough medical supplies.
Most retaken villages our teams visit in #Kherson lack electricity or running water. Healthcare staff are starting to return but need medicines and equipment. #MSF is donating medical supplies, but more support is required to protect people from the effects of a harsh winter
